The Complicated History of Chanel Beauty

Coco Chanel began her beauty empire with Chanel No.5. But did you know it started as a gift with purchase and consequently was heavily based on another perfume?
This was the start of the Chanel Beauty empire that saw Gabrielle Chanel grow to become one of the richest and most famous people in the world. At least that was until her extreme views caused her to lose it all; even becoming private labelled before her death.
So how did it come back from the cosmetic graveyard to being one of the most respected makeup brands on the market today?

My mother spent a decade wearing Helena Rubinstein's whole beauty range - lotion, cream , cleanser, make-up, bronzers; then moved to Givenchy, the whole skincare line aswell. A fortune! She thinks her skin is great because of that - she's 74. What she doesn't realize, to my dismay, is that her mother had also great skin, untill her last days, and only wore pharmacy creams, amd I'm 42 now and just began having the first tiny one or two wrinkles and I buy my creams from the supermarket or use last year's SPF, mostly Nivea's. So I'm not saying that the creams are all the same, what I'm saying is, if genetics is favorable to you, it means you don't have to invest a fortune to keep your skin beautiful, you just buy the basics and it's okay.

@@underskinYT tbh I feel like Chanel as a brand kept pushing the idea of the original designer’s “glory” on thier KZbin channel in which they recruited famous actors to recreate mini films of her life through time which blinded my perception of her. Particularly “Once Upon a time…” and “The return” by Karl largerfeld Also back in the 2015 I attended the mademoiselle prive a Chanel exhibition at the Saatchi gallery in London which celebrated both her and Karl but the main take away was that Chanel was amazing and we all left with a poster of the event which was coco’s silhouette which back then I was so happy to own but now I can only laugh at my ignorance 😂 Either way I don’t feel like Chanel are that distant from their origins I feel they use coco’s heritage of old and French to sell their goods especially in a world were they designs are so played out. @@darlahays2471 The whole selling point, in its day, was that it smelled artificial. That was the innovative bit. The standard fragrances of the day were single ingredient florals (rose water, orange blossom water), or were blends of distinguishable natural notes. No5 was outstanding because it did not smell natural, but also because it smelled 'like itself', it was so well blended that you couldn't actually distinguish the individual elements that went into it. This was a time when 'chemical' and 'artificial' were things to get exited about, because they were new. It seems weird today, because of our current love of all things natural, in ingredient lists and aesthetics, but people of that era had only known the natural, so synthetic and lab-made were 'fire emoji' marketing terms. I personally really like No5

the main question I have remains unanswered by this video: how the hell did they save ther reputation after Coco Chanel had been exposed as a Nazi? Something must have have happened in the 60s and 70s??? Also I find it deeply disturbing how you will find countless pictures of Coco Chanel in French language schools (been to one myself last year) as if she was some sort of national hero. Are the french simply ignorant about this or do they just not care (possibly because there are still strong antisemitic/racist tendencies - especially across the wealthier popluation??)

There was a musical in 1969 called Coco which earned Katherine Hepburn a Tony nomination. There was movie in 2009 called Coco before Chanel. Recently there has been a museum exhibition on Chanel. I've loved Chanel fragrances for almost 5 decades. I am relatively new to their skin care, but am long familiar with their makeup. You are right in that nearly all products in the beauty side are consistently good, reliable and trust worthy. There are no doubt better products in each category than Chanel's, but I can walk into a store, buy an item that I think will suit me and walk out knowing the product will perform beautifully for me, even without trying it on. I do not have that fear of taking a gamble, like I do with other brands that introduce and discontinue products constantly. Of I go to Beijing, London or Buenos Aires, an eye brown pencil I ordinarily buy in Melbourne will be the very same product at pretty much the same price. That keeps me going back to Chanel.

The Jews of Europe are also 'White', they are just not 'Aryan', as defined by the Nazis. By the way, they rarely used words like 'Christian' or 'White' to denote non-Jews in occupied lands in Western Europe. They did use the term 'Aryan', which was quickly made even more meaningless than it had already been, as it was sometimes applied to non-Jewish ( ie Catholic) Poles, who were often also considered non-Aryan as (in the Nazi way of thinking) subhuman Slavs. Anti-Semites in the United States before World War II would often refer to Jews as 'not White', but Nazi Europe had its own tropes.

As for fragrances, Chanel has also maintained a great level of quality in the formula, and consistently. They have nearly no misses in the fragrance range, which cannot be said about other brands like (unfortunately) YSL or Dior, which just put out cheap, easy to sell junk with ever new new new versions that will disappear at the end of the summer. Which is a shame, since those were incredible maisons with amazing scents (think M7, first oud perfume, Diorissimo, a perfect lily of the valley, Kouros, maybe the most sensual fragrance ever, Dune, a strange perfume that makes you travel), though thankfully they still sell those legacy fragrances

There were celebrity fragrances before Chanel and very many in between Chanel and Elizabeth Taylor, a lot of the perfumeries that became commercial became commercial with blends that were originally consigned as bespoke fragrances for royalty or socialites - the celebrities of the day so original perfumes were marketed as celebrity fragrances. But if we are talking about traditional celebrities Elizabeth Taylor was not the first celebrity line post Chanel and designers weren't celebrities back then any more than the socialites were when perfume became commercial. Cher had a scent in 1987, there were celebrity fragrances before then.
@underskinYT

Youre completely right, yes, the only thing I dosagree with was that Coco wasnt a celebrity, or that designeds werent celebrities because they very much were, they were put in magazines and even on TV on quiz shows. In my Schiaparelli video on my fashion channel you can see actual clips of Elsa on TV if youd like. But yeah, very interesting history of celebrity perfumes all around
@thebitterprojector
@thebitterprojector 9 ай бұрын
@@underskinYT I was just saying Coco wasn't any more of a celebrity than the original aristocracy that commercial perfumes were based on their bespoke perfumes. I was attempting to say that perfume was always based on celebrity to be commercialized.

Chanel cosmetics aren’t great at all .. and the skincare is ridiculous. Fragrant substances are In there, which makes the skincare potentially irritating. Also there are no cutting edge technology ingredients in there that are proven to work (superficially of course like all skincare). Better use products for a comparable price (or cheaper ) with ingredients that are actually working. Beauty KZbinrs like Caroline Hirons are great sources of knowledge. Some of the perfumes are great though - especially the private line
@underskinYT

I also find perfumed products extremely difficult to use, I have exceptionally dry and irritable skin, so I totally understand what you mean
@dinavienna
@dinavienna Жыл бұрын
@@underskinYT yes sensitive skin likely tells you immediately these products are no good (which is a blessing in disguise). But all of us should use only effective ingredients that are proven not to harm us. Brands like drunk elephant, Kate Somerville etc have all the science behind them. And yes they come at a similar price tag but they work and aren’t harmful! They just don’t have the fancy brand name ..

The first viral Chanel beauty trend was the lipstick color "Vamp" in the mid 90s. Karl actually did the following rtw collection based on a new version of Vamp. He reintroduced it in silver and of course it was a huge flop!

I remember being a teenager and saving up for their Rouge Noir nail polish. I still love Chanel makeup, I can’t help it. Edit: I also saved up for her skincare around the same time. The cream caused a massive reaction, I think my skin doesn’t tolerate so much fragrance in a face product. Never tried anything since then.

Seeing and hearing this makes me think that J Galliano was trying to do the same w his antiemetic tantrum in 2010. Maybe there is a long term plan to install him.
