That NEEWER 160 LED CN-160 Dimmable LED Light is super useful too even without the softbox kit/diffuser. Just slap some wax paper or parchment paper over the front, boom, instant softbox with flattering light. Get yourself a tall straight piece of wood, drill a hole in the top just smaller than the mount screw, weight the bottom with say a dumbell, brick, etc or make a tripod like I did from wood. Ah snaps ghetto light stand and softbox for about $35 bucks.

I have the Canon Powershot Elph160 and absolute hate it.. The image quality is nice and the 720p video quality is nice - when it works. The focus on this camera is atrocious.. It goes out of focus and stays out of focus to a point where it has ruined SEVERAL videos for me and the blur is beyond saving. You can't even make out a face in the video when it gets to this point. Just my experience with this particular camera. I got it for vlogging, but with this issue, it is pretty much useless for shooting video as a whole. I'm posting this comment to give you something to think about. I also want to see if I'm the only one with this problem. That's my rant, have a good day. And awesome video, Sean! :)

Thank you for your softbox suggestion. After watching this video I started to investigate and based on your recommendation of the limostudio set, finally pulled the trigger and I couldn't be happier. These are huge for my small home office space, but are incredibly compact as far as storage. previously I picked up the neewer cn-160 led light and I really like that as well, especially that it's wicked bright, with a great dimmer, and takes AA batteries (I have a million rechargeable NIMH AA's). I'm also thinking about maybe picking up that takstar shotgun mic for my T5i, but the hiss that comes out of the in-camera mic preamp has me disappointed enough where I'm thinking about maybe picking up an external audio recorder instead, and using a decent but reasonably priced non-amplified shotgun mic and/or "handheld" vocal mic on a boom (as I have been experimenting with already by using my computer as a secondary audio recorder and using premiere to auto sync the audio with the crap audio from the camera's built in mic and thus the video... I'm still working out my setup, but I'm sure my first youtube video will be rolling out within the next month or two. Thanks again! these video making tutorials are rad!

I just recently purchased the Fifine K668 USB Microphone, and I highly recommend it if you're looking for a cheap mic with decent quality. I haven't yet done any recordings with it, but I've tested it out and fiddled around with it, and I'm highly satisfied with the quality. Surprisingly, it's really good considering it was about $20 on Amazon when I got it. High-quality build, too - the entire mic has a metal body. 10/10 would recommend.

I dig my Neewer 160, but I recently bought (and totally dig) the Bestlight Vpad-150. It's $40, and it bounces the light from the LEDs off the inside of the fixture, so it comes out much softer that the Neewer (which points the LEDs directly at your subject. It's not quite as bright, but you can adjust the color temp from daylight to tungsten, and it's about 11 inches wide, so you can really get a nice wide, even light source.

I am quite happy with this kit. As for lighting i am using 2 headed halogene construction light. A bit too Bright but as a complementary indirect light( reflected off the ceiling in the interior studio). LED light are now available. The panasonic GH2 can be picked up now for £200 (about $300?) body only, superb piece of kit with potential to install a very stable hack for a very high bit-rate. Using a cheap converter from ebay (about $4) I used old 80's manual canon lenses, beautiful glass and available on ebay for $30+ depending what lens you're after. The great thing about DSLR's is that you can just buy the adapters and experiment with all different kinds of lenses to get the tone and feel you're after, just consider buying all the same brand and era for any particular shoot for consistency. Not ideal for vlogging if you want autofocus, but for somebody wanting to make some serious film on a ridiculously low-budget these are still an excellent option. GH2 is 1080 HD with mic input.

I like the way you present the content. There is so much you speak and it's still very clear. Do you use a teleprompter or something. If this is spontaneous, maybe you could share some info on how you do this. I am looking forward for this because, English is not my language but I do videos in English. SO I write the script first, then rehearse it a few times before the take. Guess what, I fumble , pause ... think... then call it a crap and do it again. Just to get an intro and an outro link, i would spend 1 hour or more. Some training methods could definitely help

Hey Sean, thanks so much for this video -- you are making this muddy world much clearer to newbie youtube vloggers clearer. If I need to point camera down to the work surface on my desk to fil mixed media/ art demos, which tripod (or other ) set up is best? I already own the elph 110hs and have only used the video camera a few times while at some event or something. Ive never edited the content, or shot demo in my home. If I go with the little lights and the microphones you discussed, what else do you recommend for my downward desk shoots? THANKS SO MUCH! I love you adding your little bloopers at the end!! I'll totally look at the smaller lights you showed at the end there. I know those can help in some situations. As for the question of the day, I actually, personally, have a Bower brand mic. It looks like a mini version of a shotgun mic, and it actually has some pretty good sound capturing. Most of the videos on my channel where I talk to the camera (you'll know because they're the ones where I have a jacket on..The others are webcam and a Blue Yeti), are done with that mic. It's only $30 at best buy. I also now use these LED desk clip lamps for lighting. They work really nice. I use 2 of them. One pointed at me, and the other behind PAST me, as in it almost faces me, but the light shines kinda likes it's a person looking in your direction, but looking past you..Idk how to explain it. But they are only $5 at walmart, and they even have plastic somewhat defusers on the front. They aren't the best, but for a super budget, they rock!

I'm amazed by the boya mic. I didn't even know you switched mics.

Depending on where you look there is the Nikon coolpix l340 for $145.00 ,720p ,30 fps ,28x zoom the only down side is that it takes 4 double A batteries

My best recommendation for a great video camera is the Sony Cannon VIXIA HF R700. But if you don't like touch screen there is the Sony HDR-CX405.

for a cheap vLog camera I use a Nikon Coolpix 4100s great for mobility, not so great on stabilization, the mic is amazing but I recommend outdoor use only.
