Very nice overview, and great starting points for someone who hasn't used the blue yeti mic. I am running a blue yeti on a pc. The OS settings are very similar to what they are on a MAC. One piece of advice for those using a PC, make sure in advanced microphone settings the default format is set to "2 channel, 16 bit, 48000Hz (DVD quality)". Mine was originally set to CD quality, switching this made a big difference. I have the PC mic volume set to 66, which works well. On the blue yeti mic, I have the gain set a little higher than you show. Like you said, each setup is a bit different. I use a boom arm with a shock mount and pop filter. When I used the blue yeti with the default desktop stand the sound was really tinny, had a lot of echoes. It might have something to do with the fact the desk has a glass top. Getting the mic off of the desk removed all echo and the tinny sound. Like you mentioned in your video, the desktop mount picks up any sounds on or around the desk. As I stated before, glad I stumbled on your channel when I was searching to blur something in Resolve.

Just discovered your channel with this video and immediately subscribed. I bought a Blue Yeti after months of going back and forth on whether or not to actually go through with the purchase. I was tired of using my iPad or MacBook Air mic to make my KZbin videos (iPad mic was weak. MacBook mic was stronger, but also picked up all sorts of background noise). What was holding me back slightly was all the different patterns (it's very overwhelming for me who has no experience with microphones). The microphone was on sale, so I took the plunge and bought it, but was still overwhelmed. Your video was the first video that popped up when I went searching for how to use a Blue Yeti microphone and I'm glad it was. It was really helpful hearing what the sound is like with the different patterns and hearing the different gain levels. It was also reassuring to hear how good the microphone sounded (a lot of people saying the sound is terrible with this mic definitely had me second guessing my purchase). You did such a good job of explaining everything. I'm very glad I found your channel and will probably go down the rabbit hole when I have time.

Thanks Jason. I've had my Blue Yeti for a couple years. Went from the stand, to a boom arm, and now - back to a stand again. For me to get the 'just right' sound with the boom, meant seeing too much of the boom arm in my videos. Going back to the stand now, and I've placed the stand on cork-based coaster (in the hopes of reducing any desktop vibrations). I also now use the sponge-cap, over the mic (I did have a Pop filter when using the boom arm). Not sure if you've tried the sponge cap - but if so, I'd like your opinion on it. Since returning to the stand, I try to keep the mic 8-12 inches away. I've got the gain slightly (not much) higher than you have here. Even with the sponge cap, I don't talk directly into it -- I have it turned, about 45 degrees. If I'm recording videos locally - just me and my voice, I record using Adobe Audition on the PC w/the Yeti, while at the same time, using a wireless lav mic going directly into the camera. Makes it easy to sync the Yeti audio to the 4k video track, when editing. If I'm interviewing people online, I ultimately record the session with Zoom - with me and as many participants as possible on Yeti's, simply because the free version of Zoom will create a separate audio track for each person on the Zoom, instead of one big, flat file - and having those separate audio files provides greater flexibility in editing. Thanks again for this video - it's great because it truly helps all of us understand the importance of good audio.

Sounds like you need to turn down the gain on your microphone and also turn down the game on the computer as much as you can with still getting good sound volume. Then work with the environment in your room a little bit. Throw some blankets on the floor, do something to limit the echoing and bouncing off of walls, floors and ceilings.

Great video! I have used all of the tips but I am still experiencing some audio issues for some reason. I put the gain all the way down but there is still some background noise. Then, I keep the volume on the mic and. the computer down, but then it. is a little too quiet, and my voice just does not sound right. I also use the cardioid setting, because any other setting makes it sound way worse. If I turn the volume or gain up, there is a ton of background noise even though it is silent when I record. Do you have any suggestions?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would say that if you have your gain all the way down and adjust your computer so that it at least is at a decent level, you can always boost it a little in post. Its better to record on the quite side with less background noise than it is to record loud. Just boost it in editing. Sounds like you also need to work on the environment a little if that's where all your background noise is coming from.

Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! So if you set your microphone up properly, the most important part for you I would think is your environment. Try and be in a room that does not have a lot of echo or maybe hang up some blankets or throw blankets on the floor if you have wood floors and no carpet. You could also use a small closet and use blankets or something to help dead in the sound a little bit. You could always look for those little recording booths or something. There’s lots of things you can do, you just have to find out what works for you but your environment is going to play a big part when you’re doing all those very quiet things. Microphone microphone should pick it up no problem. Here’s a video of how I did some sound treatment for my studio if you’re interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZOclmN7qt9mn6M

I'm working on tweaking mine, I'd love to have my as far away as you, but because I'm ina. Very small room and my desk is about 3-4 feet from the wall, so I have a boom arm and I'm putting it like 2-3 inches to the side of my mouth. Using the yeti x and I'm trying to do what I can on the free or super cheap to help reduce the echo in the room it seems to pick up. I put some indoors/ outdoor carpet on the wall Infront of me and some pictures to help break up the sound. I thought about getting some bedding eggshell and painting them to make cheap audio panels, I know the paint blocks the air holes, so I'm not sure. Love watching your videos! You have been a big help.

Hi Jason! When I first began podcasting I bought a Yeti Blue. However, I had two major problems: the Yeti condenser mic picks up too much sound of my children playing in the next room or even on the floor below my office. The other problem I have is that my voice has deep resonance which causes distortion even with the gain on 0 and a distance of 8 inches. I switched to a dynamic Røde Podcaster which is great for eliminating background noise and doesn't pick up as much resonance which allows me to speak with more enthusiasm. However, whenever I work remote, I need to use my Yeti. Aside from wrapping a pillow around the back or recording in a closet, what advice do you have for cancelling background noise and reducing unwanted bass resonance?
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! So a few things to try, I'm assuming you've got the gain all the way down on the mic already, but also lower it down on your computer. That will help limit the noise. The Yeti does pick up a lot of extra noise if it's not quite for sure. Make sure you are using the cardioid mode. To reduce some bass, move the mic farther away from you, more than the 8" you mentioned. That will reduce some of that proximity/bass effect you hear. That's where I'd start and see how it goes from there. Hope this helps a bit!

I do have this mic and I have used it for some karaoke live streams a little while back. I do like it, but for singing, it always seemed pretty sensitive and if I was to sing a little more aggressively, it would peak, even with the gain knob turned all the way down. I would have to actually move out of the way of the mic and sing quite a bit away from it to make it sound a little better. I did set up a compressor filter in OBS to try to help as well, though I haven't tweaked the EQ, which I have been meaning to do, but I haven't really streamed in some time. I do like this mic though. Thanks for the vid.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that! Yeah, might not be the best for singing. You could always try reducing the gain on the computer in addition to keeping the gain very low on the mic. That might help some. Defiantly don't want to be peaking though. EQ can make a big difference on any mic and really enhance it. Love some EQ. Thanks for watching!

@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 3 жыл бұрын
HI! Thanks for checking out the video! For picking up good audio for ASMR videos, here's my thoughts. I think you want an environment that is very quiet or treated for sound reduction. For example, I've created a room using acoustic blankets and it kills any echo or reverb you might hear. You can even use blankets to accomplish this. I'd also say that you all need to turn up the sensitivity on your mic. On the yeti for example you should turn up the gain so the mic is more sensitive and can pick up the quieter sounds. If the mic itself doesn't have a gain on it, then you'll need to turn it up in the computer or on the audio interface if you are using one. Then it's just finding the balance to be able to pickup the sound you want with out peaking or killing the levels. If you have some loud noises and some quiet, you may need to adjust your mic input levels as you go. You can always fine tune the audio a little bit in post in a program like DaVinci Resolve - I've got lots of audio videos in DaVinci Resolve if you are interested. Hope this helps a bit! Best of luck on your channel!

Great video. I just got mine and I installed Blue Voice too. I’ve been doing let’s play videos for about a year now and I think the broadcaster setting makes my voice sound even better. Blue voice also has some filtering that I think works better than my capture software. Maybe not as good as Nvidia’s voice AI but it’s got preresets that are pretty good. I used to use a Tonar Q9 and while good, I think the Yeti is even better. Edit: I do struggle with the question of cardioid vs stereo pattern.

Hello Jason, thank you for your video. It already helped me a lot. Unfortunately I still experience 2 huge issues. 1. I lowered the gain on the mic and increased the windows sound on the fullest. But the recording is still too silent. I can adjust it with audio-post processing, but it is not suited for livestreams. 2. Every time I increase the gain, I get a low frequency disturbing sound. Like my microphone has too much bass. Even though I do not speak directly in it and also use a pop-filter. I just ordered a shock-mount to see, if this may solve the issue. But I just can not get rid of this annoying low frequency. Do you have any ideas, how to solve this problem? Kind Regards Michael
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael - i’m not sure what software you were live streaming with but if you can run an EQ on your microphone in the live stream, I would throw a high pass filter on there and try and EQ out any of those nasty frequencies that you’re hearing. Or maybe it’s just legitimate interference from something in the environment. 🤔

Hi, Jason. Thank you for the info you shared in this video, it’s really been quite helpful and has improved my experience with the mic immensely, as I am very pleased with this product. I do still have one unsolved issue, though. When doing Zoom calls and recordings (I record a podcast on Zoom,) my microphone volume seems to go down when someone else speaks at the same time as I do. This happens even if there’s just one more person with me on the call. Now, since the podcast is interactive and we have a lot of back and forth conversations going on, it’s an inconvenience. I don’t like to use headphones (even though I do own some very good ones) and I have an external speaker connected to my desktop PC that I keep at a mid-volume level. Is this a common problem with this microphone or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance and greetings from Panama City, Panama.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 6 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for checking out the video! I think the issue you are experiencing is because of zoom, it has nothing to do with the microphone. In zoom, make sure you turn off any options to 'remove background noise' and any 'automatic microphone levels.' Set you mic levels manually and have all guests do the same settings for these two items. I think that will fix the problem.

I lead guided meditations on Zoom and use a bell to begin and end meditations. When I use headphones directly plugged into my Mac the bell sounds good. When I use the Yeti, I hear the sound at the beginning and then it drops off and comes back with static. Is this because the sound is maxing out? The bell is usually on the table about 10 inches from the Yeti.
@JasonYadlovski
@JasonYadlovski 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! It could be that the bell is peaking, but it could just also be the way it's coming through the yeti. Can you rewatch the recording and see if there is any difference in the bell when you listen one way vs another way? My guess is that it sounds fine on the zoom, it's just sounding different when you are monitoring it.
