Naw shadowblade plus eldritch spear. Then do agonizing to make it stronger and take meta magics so you're range with spell sniper is 1,200 feet of multi shots plus extra damage. You can instinctively shoot farther than you can see unless you have eyes of the eagle. You're welcome cause it's fun as hell on my warlock/rogue with metas.

@@melissawardjohns220 Eldritch Spear is basically a wasted Invocation unless you're going to spend a lot of time on the high seas, firing at targets half a mile away, or engaging in siege warfare in which you want to outrange a trebuchet. Adding a feat (at least in the name of doubling range again; the ability to ignore most cover can be very rewarding) and spending Sorcery points is just throwing good resources after bad. In most environments (let's see ... dungeons, indoors, forests and jungles, cities and towns, hills, mountains and gorges unless you spend *ALL* of your time on the highest hillTOP in the area, swamps ...) you can basically count on never needing any more range beyond the 120 feet Eldritch Blast already offers you ... because you're unlikely to even be able to see an enemy beyond that range.

My two cents : My first character was a ranger back in 3.5 (different rule set) and my DM basically described him as Aragorn from LotR. So I went in, built him as a bastard sword user to alternate between two-handed swings and sword & board, I completelly ignored the ranged options and basically made a fighter with less attack / standing power but more exploration utility witch ended up saving my part's ass more than one time given they where mostly spell casters and a rogue. My best character now, was indeed in 5th edition and was called John. He basically was a retiered town guard, mid-50's, took a nasty hit to the leg. He was enjoying retierement when his town went under attack, he managed to get his familly (wife, two kids) in safety and got them all (plus a few other citizens) in the next town thanks to the rest of the party. Sending his familly to his wife's sister in the capitol, he embarked with the party to uncover the truth behind the attack and help protect the realm. He was a champion fighter, the most boring fighter archetype to play, but given his large mastery of weapons, his heavy armor and his "dad" character, he quickly became the de-facto leader of the party, first in the fray, last one to leave. That campain went up from lvl 1 to lvl 20, we uncovered the work of cultists, took a trip down the abyss and ended up fighting Tiamat then her great priest having transfered hi soul in the Tarasque body (think physical tarasque, mind and magic powers of a 20th lvl cleric). With both fights almost back to back, the tarasque teleporting in the capitol during our triumphant return from the Abyss. By that point we were lvl 20, ready to wrap it all up, and boom ! surprise tarasque with 150IQ and divine magic to boot. John died during that fight, protecting his comrades and his family (still living in the city) and was forever remembered as the normal guy, the tranquille hero, and the tarasque killer given that his sword indeed gave the last killing-crit of the fight. No character's class is boring, only what you make of them. Ps : sorry for the eventual mistakes, I'm not a native english speeker.

Personally I am of the opinion that there is no such thing as a boring character, only boring players. I still enjoy the champion sub. I will admit I do like to multi class then no for some extra flavor, in fact I've been thinking about doing a half orc champ/barbarian herald of the sea for a sort of viking style of character where the half orc bonus die to crits adds to the barbarian bonus to crits with a great axe for some nasty damage while crit fishing. But I that is the thing with this game. If you get tired of something then think up of ways to use what you get with something else and make it different.

The major problem with introducing a beginner to the Warlock is that the Warlock/Patron relationship can get a little bit hard to distinguish from kink.
@SerasXHarkonnen
@SerasXHarkonnen Жыл бұрын
Depends on the patron, my new character is an Air Genasi Genie Warlock and her patron is her dad. She doesn't know she has a pact, she just always wanted to attend the fancy magic school in her city to learn magic so her dad made the pact to give her magic so she could get into school and live her best life. Now she's been sent on a journey with the party and she doesn't know why but it's really just her dad trying to push her to see the world and make friends. My point is a patron is only what you and your DM want them to be.
@archertreloar4806
@archertreloar4806 Жыл бұрын
That’s a really cool idea actually, very cute dynamic. My warlock is a mind flayer (homebrew race) whose patron is their elder brain boss. Mind flayers hate magic, but my brainy boi was born with an aptitude for arcane power, so their people rejected them. Until the elder allowed them to cast spells on the condition they use their magic to help the colony gain more thralls to infect with mind flayer tadpoles. Thing is, my character also cares about other people and their free will, and so does not do that and basically just goes MIA on their patron. They’re just trying to run away and escape with their pact magic without their elder brain patron tracking them down.

i'm intrigued by your take on prepared spells. my second character was a bard, and while i don't love being locked into spell choice, it reduces the number of "spells i need to understand the function of". you don't have to know how to work the class's whole spell list, just the spells you like. too many options can kind of be paralysing, and it's a slightly more complex mechanic. Because of how inexperienced I am I decided I'm probably going to choose a class from the S, A or maybe even still B category just so the basics of the game are easier to focus on and I can first learn how to play at all.

Bards have a hell complex wall of text too. They are too diverse and strange for a newbie like me to actually get how to play as them. As a technical student, I definitely don't have learning disabilities, but i choose a paladin to be my first character and I didn't want anything more complicated than that. I was basically using three things: a greatsword, smite and lay on hands. The very system of dnd is complex, and often unclear how to count this or that. I had a person who is normally a dm sitting right next to me and that really helped.

My issue with Bards for new players is that: 1. They need to learn how combat flows so they know when and how to use Bardic Inspiration, and remember to use it. 2. They need to learn the entire game's spell list by level 10 (8 if College of Lore) for magical secrets. 3. Most of their spells are complex and confusing. Enchantment, Illusion, buffs, debuffs, those are the spells that need a conversation with the party and DM for them to be worth using. Knowing what's okay with Suggestion, Compulsion, Geas, or Command isn't good for beginners, and illusion spells are some of the biggest walls of text in the game. 4. Bards use known spells, not prepared spells, so new players can't trial-and-error their way through the spell list. Clerics are the opposite: 1. Your spells tend to be pretty simple and self-explanatory. 2. You can swap them the next day if you don't like them. 3. You only need to know your own spell list, and as explained before, that's easy to learn with prepared spells. 4. The only wall of text you really need to know is one you essentially chose at level 1. What will your alternative Channel Divinity be if you aren't facing undead? 5. Better armor.

@@AgentForest I'd argue Bards get it easier. speaking subjectively: 1) learning how combat works can actually be a good thing for new players to learn the game's basics 2) they can just chose a spell they think is cool, and they have until level 10 to figure it out, and by that point they'll probably have seen quite a few spells 3) true 4) With Bards you chose your spells once and that's it. you don't need to know your entire spell list, just the ones you picked. Also the DM can just agree to change your spells. 5) Bards have ways of contributing to the party that aren't spells, like Bardic Inspiration, which is very straight-forward, and Jack of All Trades / Expertise, which are passives being suboptimal is mostly ok for new players who just want to have fun 1) I agree 2) yes but you need to know ALL of your spell list and memorize it every day, and constantly make new choices, which can be overwhelming for new players 3) again, Bards get a long amount of time to do that 4) that's still a lot, and compared to "you can add small dice to big dice" and "you have +1 to all skills" it's a lot more complicated. Bards also get to chose their subclass at level 3, which gives the player time to consider their choice. 5) I guess? one argument I do see for Clerics is that you can just prepare the same spells each day, which is suboptimal, but streamlines the game until you're ready to jump into the complicated stuff and learn your entire spell list
@AgentForest
@AgentForest 2 жыл бұрын
@@atocanboi409 I'm of the opinion that the worst way to teach a new player is to hand them a massive list of options they don't understand, and tell them all choices are final. That's why I feel like prepared spell casters are better for new players than known spell casters. They can pick whatever sounds cool, try it out, and if they don't like it, it's gone tomorrow for something else. They don't get permanently punished for making a bad decision that they didn't fully understand 10 sessions ago. A cleric also only needs to learn the cleric spell list, which as I said is easier to learn when you have the option to try literally all of it and only keep what you like. Magical Secrets requires you to know the spells from all the other classes, and how those would fit with your current list and abilities. Even a Bard is going to need to know the Cleric spell list at some point if they want to make good decisions at level 10+, but a Cleric will never really need to know how the Bard spells work. As for knowing the way combat works, I agree that learning that's important for new players, but I don't think Bardic Inspiration does that. It's a very good mechanic that for someone who hasn't played before might not seem that powerful on paper, and until you already know how combat works, you likely won't be using it well, and as such probably won't find it a fun or useful feature at face value. I think Bard makes a great second character to play, but I couldn't in good conscience recommend it to a new player, and still expect them to feel impactful. It takes far more meta knowledge than other classes. Playing Bards and Artificers is almost like being a game modder. You can do some amazing things, but you need to know how the game works to effectively do your job, and if you are new to the game, it's just overwhelming.

First time playing I was a Dragonborn paladin. First mission was a basic dungeon run, however I forgot to equip the armor I chose. (We were using an app for character sheets and I didn't apply the armor) In hindsight thematically this meant I went through it naked and constantly at death's door. Also the deity I served was the Raven Queen so my DM played this as disadvantage on death saving throws from my inherent acceptance of death. This in turn set the entire base of who that character would become.

I would say the strength of rangers after TCoE, is that they have a variety of utility in both combat and out of combat. They are a class that can fill every role equally more or less, and have a variety of abilities designed to maximize effectiveness in unique situations.

Rangers out of combat use is directly proportional to how well-adapted they are to the environment they explore. They still don't get the full-attack regimen of fighters, nor the control / damage sustain of Battle Master / Samurai. Rangers get some useful spells, but have neither the power of clerics nor the versatility of druids.The redeeming factor for rangers, esp. with Tasha's, is that their spells support archer builds like no other class, and give an ability to find a neat wild companion with more durability than a wizard/warlock's familiar.

You’re absolutely right about Warlocks, but the thing I’d emphasize even further is that they get more they can do at-will than any other caster. Sure, for much for the game they only have two spell slots, but tome pact warlocks get more cantrips than any other class in the game, so you’ve got a whole at-will magical toolikit, while chain pact warlocks get a super familiar with a ton of useful unlimited abilities. Moreover, taking the Book of Ancient Secrets invocation makes you the most versatile Ritual caster in the gsme, while invocations like Mask of Many Faces and Armor of Shadows essentially turn some of the game’s most useful first-level spells into cantrips. As a new player, being able to play an infiltrator who could change my appearance at-will gave me a whole other aspect to my character for the entire campaign for the cost of a single invocation.

That being said, just hearing his reasoning for the Bard and then transitioning to Cleric & Druid made absolutely 0 sense. Every criticism he made for bard can easily be applied to them and then some. Not saying they're much worse for new players, but that Bards are way too low on this list. Every new player I've had that's played a bard has had an incredibly easy go with it, and the class is so very well structured & simple to grasp for a new player compared to the other full casters. I wish he would've elaborated further on it. EDIT: everything else, including what he said about the Druid & Cleric by themselves I pretty much agreed with. I wouldn't move anything else really besides Bard.

My first time playing was actually a ranger! The DM had a kraken as the first encounter, and it wasn't a winnable fight by any means. But it was more-so for the story. I ended up taking 2 tentacles off it though! I shot a couple arrows into the tentacles to pin them to the ship deck, and quickly ran over to hack off the tentacles with the others. Obviously that was very heavily based on the luck of the dice. But I felt like that showed the ranger shining!

The more your DM makes wilderness and general survival/travelling a factor, the more useful a Ranger is even when no mechanics get involved. The same applies to Druid. I think a Druid is more complicated than a straight martial character, however a Moon Druid also has a simple and effective role that a beginner can immediately grasp: in combat you just wildshape into a bear or a wolf and attack and if you run out of HP you go back to your regular self; and you can do that twice between rests. So you're a great front line tank, but you ALSO get spells that you can figure out how to use when you're not in combat and the pressure is lessened. At least that is what I think he meant. It sounds a lot like a Cleric or a Paladin who have a easy to understand role, but can also do some cool things with magic.

It's the 101 for learning D&D, from there you can start filling out your collection with other books like the Dungeon Master's Guide, but a lot of the information is available online, so step one is absolutely to start playing and having fun, then worrying about getting the materials! I have not played in over 20 yrs, but have always checked in and enjoy watching about it. When I did play it was with a custom subclass the DM and his best friend made called "Rune Mage." Basically, having houses of concentration that just divided spells up and you had a limited number of points to spend like having a skill tree for your spells. You could either put all your points into one house and have a more powerful spell or 1 better than average and one less than average, or you could split them up and have a basic spell in several houses. Each time you leveled up you got more points. I think it was 3 points each time until near the end where you got 5 to spend. Each spell had 3 levels and so you could put all 3 points into 1 spell, 1 point into 3 spells, or 2 into 1 spell and 1 into another. Each house had its own unique name they came up with like House of the Helping Hand and it had spells to conjure food or purify water, as well as healing and communication. Another was the House of Light and Shadow and it had blind, and seeing in the dark as well as perception and concealment spells. There were like 8 houses they came up with. 4 of them were the individual basic elements so House of Flame, House of Tide, House of Wind, House of Earth. Then there was the House of Chaos that focused on "chaos magic" that could make projectiles or cause a random effect and you could choose random buff or random debuff. It added to the fun if the buff was completely useless for the fight you are in. The last was House of Self, which were spells that affected only you. It had things like enhanced concentration, quick rest, quell hunger, things along that line. They made a chart for me of all the houses and spells so I could keep track of it all and bring it along for campaigns if we had another DM other than them, who created this class/subclass. I played my Rune Mage for ~5 years with the same set of guys. Eventually when you maxed out houses that enables you to combine spells from those houses you learned all the spells in. The combined spell would take the level of the lower-level spell you are combining. It could still be very powerful. So, combining a water wall and flame wall gave me a smoke screen spell if successful. You never missed a cast either. You could miss a target if using a projectile, but you would always cast a spell. The tradeoff being that as a RUNE mage, you had to "draw" the rune onto something to effect it. Lvls 1-5 actually needed to draw it with a quill, paint, blood, mud, smashed berries, something. After that you could just make the gesture with your finger(s) on the object. For the elements you had to draw it in the element, so earth spells in dirt, water in water, air in air, and fire you'd get burned fingers, which would affect your rune drawing ability for other spells. So, you wanted a high Dexterity to draw quicker and in more awkward situations (like being bound or hanging upside down), and Charisma helped you get close enough to people or things to be able to "draw" the rune on with your finger(s) without suspicion. It was a lot of fun, and lead to some very interesting situations and spell combinations.

I think you're right on sorc and wizard but I think it is possible to use for beginners. I was a first time DM last year and my party of first time players had a sorcerer and a wizard and I feel like it was tougher on me to learn those classes than it was for the players. I had the mindset that they would learn their classes while I learn how to DM and they would effectively teach me their classes as we played, but when they had trouble understanding their classes I took to figuring them out myself. Once I figured out how the classes basically work, I explained it to them in an easy to digest way that they were able to perform their roles effectively and even surprise me with some tricks. It was fun to see the sorcerer and wizard do things like cover a small area with oil then light it on fire with the enemies still inside. Since they could be very crafty in this way I think they enjoyed playing those classes despite the difficulty to learn. There was still stumbling along the way from the party and myself, which we handled rule confusion fairly well I think. It took being flexible, like if a rule is unintentionally broken, like they had a spell they weren't supposed to have yet or didn't know they were supposed to pick out more spells. I chalked it up to things like a god blessed the character that 1 day with an extra spell. Even mistakes can become part of the story in that way. I would say wizard is worse than sorcerer because wizard has a lot more to deal with, especially when it comes to the magic schools. But sorc is just casting cantrips for the most part and when they get to the sorcery points, they have played the game enough to know what they would be good for and also they don't have enough to break the game. Wizard broke encounters with magic missiles as it was instantly OP when they brought it out. I must have been misunderstanding something about it because we went over the description every time it was used because we were confused as to why its so strong so early.

My first character was a human barbarian, and while I didn’t struggle with combat or role play, looking back at the character, the campaign didn’t go long enough to really flesh him out. Then came along my second character, Orlin the Tortle Spore Druid with the Warcaster feat at level 4 and the bane of my dms existence for those few games with him. Basically took all the battlefield control spells I could as well as spells to impose disadvantage, with an ac of 19 on top of that. Still my favorite character that I would love to use again.

I would have put Warlock in S tier for new players. Fairly simple spell casting and Charisma based, so good for the social side of roleplaying (Face character).

It's kind of fitting for the d6, squishy, spellcasters to be at the bottom of the list :P One change I've adopted for the "known" spellcasters (Bards, Sorcerers, exc) from an old Unearthed Arcana, is that I let them swap out one spell on a Long Rest. Still nowhere near as versatile as a Cleric, or even a Wizard, but if they picked a bad spell on level up, they're not stuck with it for 8 sessions (or longer, if they have more than one spell they want to swap out).

Great idea! That's a really powerful but also helpful ability to add in, and I think definitely a great homebrew rule to have. I might start doing that!

I made a hexblade warlock that uses none of the Eldritch Blast invocations. The concept is instead of asking his Patron to grant him spells to be powerful that way he asked his Patron to make him a better fighter

A warlock can really be loads of fun if you match it with an unusual background (I like Urchin for some thiefish type stuff) and put your high stat score in dex rather than charisma, give that your second highest. If a new player is hard set on spellcaster, I like sorcerer the best, work with your DM, pick your spells, and then run with it, no reinventing the wheel every other game, but get help with the spells. Awesome video.

I made a Halfling Rouge for my first 5th Ed Character. I really like the character. My DM did let us find Ring of Darkvision, so that was helpful. It made learning the ins and outs of 5th ED a lot easier then if I played a Sorcerer(which I loved in 3rd ED). Cheers

My first game I played was with a seasoned DM but all players at the table were new as well. I chose wizard and multiclassed with sorcerer; both of classes listed in the D tier ranking in this video. Having done this his assessment of what makes those classes hard for beginners is true, but I really enjoyed the challenge, albeit it was very difficult for me to adjust and learn. I like to play MTG and deck-build a lot, so this play style had a similar streak, but was still uncomfortable at times, deeply anxiety provoking, but also deeply fun. A lot of the discomfort came from personal conflicts between players that were accentuated by the complexity of play the the wizard/sorcerer lends itself to coming into conflict with the mechanically simpler characters the other players were playing; so with a group of friends that are patient and kind with each other, and the wizard player doesn't get obsessed with perfecting their play like I did, that tension can be alleviated quite a bit. Eventually we all smoothed things over and learned to cooperate and complement each other and play became smooth and fun. Also, by the time the characters reached level 20 I knew virtually all of the core rules in DnD very well. If you like complexity and challenge and have a good set of friends that can be patient, can communicated their expectations and feelings well, then even a beginner can play and enjoy the wizard and sorcerer and have a good time so long as they want to put in the effort and enjoy it and they don't get tunnel-visioned.

My group is about to have their second campaign tomorrow. half the group have been playing with me and we have a couple of players that are brand new. When helping one of them come up with their character he was super intrigued with the wild magic sorcerer. I explained how difficult it would be for a first time but as soon as we came upon the sorcerer he was in love. I thoroughly enjoy teaching first time players so I am eager to see if he sticks with the sorcerer.

I started out on wizard because I really wanted to cast spells and the dm was cool he helped us alot but it wasn't too hard it helps you learn about the game quickly by seeing how different spells affect things

For me, I really enjoy Warlock as I'm a fan of the Kingdom Hearts games and it just reminds me of that when making one, like how Invocations are similar to Abilities or how the magic (you learn less spells but they hit harder) fit a more simple mindset in gameplay

I played as a Tabaxi monk way of the open palm for my first character. I had so much fun with Strikes a Path. Lol... I made him so I could go anywhere and get to the fight... But sadly he died against a white dragon. But I will always remember that.

I appreciate good videos like this for beginners. First TTRPG i played was Shadowrun, and i chose Technomancer (cuz it sounded good) It didnt go well, because i had picked the wrong skills to do what i wanted to do. Party pretty much died (not my fault, surprisingly) Turned out i had picked the most complex class in a very complex game. It was very tough. Plus side: wizards in dnd are easy in comparison lol! But the real lesson i learned was to look up class videos before starting a new game, and then play whatever you like the sound of. If its difficult and your party dies, so be it. Itll give you plenty of laughter for years to come. Me and my wife and friends still laugh about that time our 'face' had to drag an unconscious Trchnomancer down a hallway while the technimancer desperately tried everything he could to turn off the alarms and turn on the fire suppression systems because our stealth player triggered the summoning of a fire deamon whilst creeping down a hallway in a hostile company's building.... LoL!
