Few comments on this: I am sure that among the Dortmund supporters you definitely had some idiots misbehaving. However, I have no idea who thought it was a good idea to have the Dortmund fans marching under a bridge surrounded by Newcastle fans. Also I don’t know if English fans are aware of this, but filming the Ultras is a massive provocation and goes beyond your usual banter. Police in Germany is going through this footage to identify group structures and members of certain groups. This can lead to house raids, stadium bans etc. What is more, many of them have probably called in sick at work to make this trip and if your employer sees footage of you walking around in Newcastle there’s a good chance you lose your job. That’s why people got so mad. Still no need or justification for violence on both ends. Just hope for a great rematch in Dortmund with good atmosphere and loads of beers to be shared between all fans. From my personal experience most English fans are good sports and quite similar to us Germans.

I mean, as a general rule, if you're wagging off work to go watch the football, maybe it would be a good idea not to go on a massive march that will draw attention to you where you'll be filmed. Also, if you are 'forming into group structures' that cause the Police to raid houses, you're probably up to no good, and filming you is probably actually a good idea.
@Caoimhin190919 күн бұрын
@@BaronSpamediNot really. Authorities in Germany are champing at the bit to suppress fans and impose collective punishments. One person does wrong, they go after the group. Just because they carry out house raids doesn't mean they're justified.

I don't understand why the Police allowed the PSG march to the ground or this one. This inevitably creates a confrontational situation. Away fans are free to circulate and drink in any part of the city and make their own way to the ground on a normal match day and in past European games there was none of this, that I can remember. We certainly had no organised "march" to the ground in Milan and I cannot see how they could do it in Paris or Dortmund. Or why anyone would want to be part of one.
@TynesideLife7 ай бұрын
Hi Chris. Ultras are organised groups that are highly motivated and have rudimentary rank structures. They’re almost like a military unit. It’s part of their tradition to march to the stadium, a bit like an army unit going into battle, hence the drums and coordinated chants. We have a different culture and therefore it’s necessary to provide a police escort to ensure the safety of all concerned. We can’t just refuse 2-3K (mainly men) to not congregate and march. That’s impossible

Once again, great video from Tyneside life. My opinion is this. I think the Police and planners haven’t handled this well at all. They’ve allowed PSG and Dortmund fans to over populate bars in the city centre/Big Market area, then they are faced with the difficulty of moving a large group through the most densely packed areas of the city, where emotions are high and the atmosphere tense, which inevitably leads to pockets of trouble. Why don’t they create an away fans zone around Times Square area. They can be contained and then moved up St James Boulevard as the match nears, avoiding the city centre and especially the Blackett Street/Percy street junction/bottle neck under the bridge. Poor planning and Policing.
@TynesideLife7 ай бұрын
Great idea, just impossible to organise, manage and execute. Ultras are from a different culture to us snd part of that is their march. If we attempt to stifle that, I can see only one likely outcome. All things considered I thought it went well except for a few minor incidents

Why did our people allow drums and megaphones into the stadium?? It ruined the atmosphere and the monotonous one chant per half by their fans was effective in quieting our lot down. Wor flags have done their bit but it’s time for the supporters to organize the singing sections better as English fans are being outdone I’m afraid
@TynesideLife7 ай бұрын
Hi Alan, we can’t stop them bringing a drum in. It’s not a prohibited article. It annoying for opposing fans but that’s the point. It destroyed our atmosphere and we were quiet for most of the game and that gives their team an advantage. I have to say, being up close to them twice now, I’m very impressed! They’re almost like a military unit going into battle. Highly motivated snd well organised, something I think we could learn from. In my opinion 😃
@Hedged0017 ай бұрын
Not sure why English clubs don’t learn from these fans? Almost every European team have these fans. They’re well organised, everyone sings and claps in unison, it’s like a well organised machine. I personally love the drum, has a gearing for battle feel, and helps synchronise the singing, doesn’t have to drum incessantly but initiates the singing. English fans seem disorganised and only sing if they’re winning

It will either have been agreed to be taken in via a fan liason pre-game, or they just take them in with force. The police/club will know its better to allow it than cause a provocation.

So where do these marches start from? Why create this atmosphere? Rugby fans are allowed to make their own ways to a stadium 🤷♂️
@TynesideLife7 ай бұрын
European Ultras have a tradition of marching to opposing teams stadiums. A bit like simulating a military unit going into battle. Many have drums and all have coordinated chants. It’s very impressive and can be intimidating. Ultras are very organised, have rudimentary rank structures and some have extreme right wing views. We in the UK don’t have that kind of organisation with our fans. UK football hooligans are disorganised, drunk and chaotic. Of course, police escorts are necessary for everyone’s safety. There’s just no way around it. If there weren’t any police, there’d be havoc.

@@TynesideLife so it's all prearranged with the police so they say where it starts an route to the stadium?
@TynesideLife7 ай бұрын
@@jaffatanski the march is prearranged and roads are closed in advance. The exact location can change which is what happened with Dortmund. Police know in advance about the march but didn’t know exactly where it would start and then decide their safety strategy etc based on recent intelligence. The eventual march started around 100m from where it was originally thought it would, but on the same route. Newcastle has a city centre stadium too which makes it even more of an impactive event
