HAPPY NEW YEAR! May the next decade bring you unlimited prosperity and happiness. Anyways, another day and another tier list, I love making these and I hope you enjoy watching them :) This one is going to be on the most popular college majors and degrees and I'm going to be ranking them on whether they're a good investment or not.
----------
If you're familiar with my other videos (College degrees that are actually worth it) and (The most useless degrees) then you will know my stance on getting an expensive college degree that will lead you to being $40,000 in debt without being able to find a job.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't follow your passion, all I'm saying is that if your passion is a useless degree, then you're probably better off just studying it on your own (For instance, Ivy League colleges offer all of these classes for FREE online) than to go into $40k worth of debt that you can't default on, and it will follow you for the rest of your life. And if you want to make that passion into a profession, I recommend going an alternative route like starting a business or a youtube channel or something along those lines.
Anyways, I wish you the best and enjoy the video. Make sure to drop a like as it helps with the evil youtube algorithm and comment if you have any input on the topic of the video, how I can improve my content, or any other videos you'd like me to make. Thanks and I'll see you in the next one!

@@sweetOOF That was more relevant a couple of years ago. There are still jobs but they're not as well paid as they used to be cause of technological progress and more access to information online. PS. Race matters ALOT if you're gonna teach English abroad. You basically have to be white or be a stereotype from an English speaking country (i.e. African American) to even be considered.

@@AK-tz6mi yeah, It's another field where if you really push for it, you can make a good amount of money. One of my teachers in high school was making a low six figures. He was head of several different departments, ran extracurricular activities after school-like speech and debate, and history club-and every year he would organizing lead a school trip for about 15 kids to go somewhere around the world. When I was in his class we were supposed to go to Egypt, but this is during the uprising, and there was a bombing at one of the hotels we were supposed to stay at. After that, he decided to switch the trip over to a UK trip and we went to Scotland, Ireland, London, and Wales. Every year he was able to write these trips off on his taxes. He truly loved what he did, and he made it work for him very well.

It's a shame that teaching isn't like being a doctor or lawyer where there's professional school for it after undergrad, weeding out the lazy dregs who tend to be attracted to the career here in the states. If you made it a lucrative career, it'd be considered prestigious, and you'd get some of the smartest people going into it. (Senior engineering student here) I’d argue that a health field degree would also be A tier. Medical/dental/PA school would be much more work and a harder degree to obtain. I think a nursing degree would be the same difficulty as a common engineering degree (maybe a little more or less depending on the school) but will not make as much as a mechanical engineer (most common engineering degree at my school). Give engineering that S baby!!

As a content Creator on this platform and someone who had one internship I was able to land a job as a social media manager just a few days ago! Feel like the rankings aren’t taking into account how over saturated some career fields are. Eg there are maybe 100-200 language students in a year but several thousand in degrees that fall under business, management etc. Realistically picking a degree that has too many people going for the same jobs is where the problem is. Most degrees are about transferable qualities and what they say about work quality/ethic. Also v different US compared to UK. UK first year/freshman year is constantly compared to sophomore year in US- it’s a lot more focussed on specific fields from earlier on instead of wasting time on extra classes

My bad man, this video would have been an hour long if I included all majors. I'd say Physics is A tier. Probably one of the toughest majors though, maybe even harder than engineering so best to smart and ready to WORK. The difficulty means there's a high barrier to entry though, so that's good
@yt_nh9347
@yt_nh9347 4 жыл бұрын
@@ShaneHummus physics is about the same as electrical engineering in terms of difficulty (which imo is the hardest engineering major) although i will argue they have a lower work load per semester than engineering students. The physics theory learnt is not necessary for 95% of technical jobs outside of academia research which is why you often see engineers get paid a lot more because their skills are industry relevant as opposed to merely learning the works of previous physicists. There is also a large barrier to entry for research/academia based roles so most physicists don't end up using what they learnt anyways

I have an Art History Degree and I am currently in a Museum Professions program (with a focus on archives management). There is a lot that you can do with an art history degree that people don’t realize, you just have to combine it with the right masters degree. Like Art History + law gives you a copyright lawyer or Art History + business gives you a gallery job or two art histories could give you an appraisal job etc... However I do not recommend you get an Art History Degree unless you are planning to go for a masters in something else.

Entrepreneurial studies sounds like the new hot scam, sounds like a degree focused on high level solutions and creating ideas. The problem with this is that it doesn't sound like its a degree that teaches you the hard/technical skills required to have a thorough understanding of how to actually implement said ideas. If you want to be an entrepreneur its much better to get an engineering degree with a double degree in business (finance/accounting) or do a MBA (masters in business admin) after undergrad in engineering.

"Math students have a leg up on CS students because they understand how algorithms work.." What exactly do you think CS students are required to learn if not algorithms and data structures? There's this misconception that CS degrees are reduced to strictly programming; they most certainly are not. A lot of CS coursework will actually be done on paper, i.e creating algorithms as well as proving many of their properties, which requires a deep understanding of discrete math. Computer science is MUCH more than programming.

Gabriel Torres No actually I've seen an AMA from a former CIA agent and they actually recommended anthropology as a prep degree. I mean what are you typically doing as an anthropologist? Blending in with people and taking notes. Sure the markets are oversaturated with these liberal arts degrees. But they can have a practical use through transferable skills. Connections matter a lot too. Drama is an F tier degree here but one of the most respected majors in my school, a top drama school that puts connections in as part of the program. I think much of the problem is that people choose their degree first, then decide what to do with it. Really people should be figuring out what they want to do then figuring out how to get there. Then they'll know what degree if any they really need

Sadly, I see where this is coming from - but I think I'm too naïve or optimistic to believe it. I hate the idea that university/college is just a job factory where you need to sacrifice your passion for the sake of the economy. For now, yes, this seems to be accurate, but I would never let this dictate whether or not you choose the arts, or education, or anything that isn't STEM or business related (aka: what society values more). Again, such a great video! I’m trying to figure out what to major in, and your videos have definitely been some of the most helpful. What tier would geography be in?

Geography is one of those degrees where some of the careers pay pretty well, but there just aren't many jobs. I'd say it's low B tier or high C tier. It's viable if you have a solid plan going into it on exactly what career you want to get into and how you're going to get there.

There just needs to be a re structure In the education system. Some degrees shouldn't be an option to study, because were taught that to make it we must have one. I'm in my thirties wish there was something like this before I graduated.
