It took me 6 years to get my bachelors. I was not mature when I went in. But hey I made it to an amazing city and got the lifestyle I dreamed of as a child. Don’t go in if you still have growing up and maturing to do. It’s okay to not be ready. My peers were always awfull to me. Bullying really harmed my brain. Also I was a late bloomer. I'm on a gap year (sponsored by my uni) and you're videos made me realize I shouldn't just go with the flow and relax like everyone else has been telling me to (even my advisors at my uni, wth). They always say, don't stress too much about what to study yet, everyone's lost at your age, it's ok to not know what you want. But, I don't want to be that person idly waiting for some epiphany to hit me when it won't. Your videos have inspired me to take an even deeper dive into my interests and the things that make me happy, so thank you so much for your amazing suggestions. I'm notorious in my friend group for being indecisive af and always seeing the two sides of a coin, so that's why career searching always makes me incredibly anxious and pressured, but starting today, even if it will take me A LOT of time and deliberation, I owe it to myself to do thorough career research in the time that my gap year plans have ceased. This is my life and I deserve to have a secure and as stress-free of a life as I can have. So happy to have stumbled upon your videos while in a youtube wormhole a few days ago, haha. 1) identify interests (long lasting) 2) identify strengths and weaknesses (be practical) *message people* 3) Setting future goals: A) lifestyle? Travel, living, how much you want to work, salary, retirement age, where to live, being a boss or employee 4) Do research about the pathways to the goal. Your passion may not lead you to your goal as a degree. Maybe find a creative route (blog, youtube). Make a top 10. 5) narrow down and go to forums. Projection of jobs and understand day to day tasks. 6) Contacting people about jobs and ask them about jobs.

I always had a passion for music and film, but I knew I needed a realistic source of income. I went to college and studied entertainment design and technology and now Im on the path to becoming a Journeyman member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees as a stagehand! Sometimes you do have to just think about how your interests can translate to the need of a business or industry. Turns out I didn’t need the degree for the job, but going to school and making the connections was my way to get into the industry and my college program laid out the foundation of a path for me to travel. Love the videos Shane, wanted to share my story for other young artists/musicians.

All the way from South Africa, one is finding this channel with the most blunt and truthful content ever. People are used to the routine that after highschool, one has to rush into a college or varsity, and that it is a must to have career, and therefore major in a faculty. Well whilst there isn't anything wrong with that, there is just everything wrong with rushing into these colleges whilst you really still not sure, what u want to do with your life. Of which leads to people wasting their money and time and health. Thanks Shane, I find your content useful and thoughtful.

My favorite part of the video is 11:09 !Surprisingly I never thought of doing those things. My main problem with college isn’t actually money; *it’s wasted time.* I don’t want to choose a useless class, that gives me information I could have easily learned from Google. I want to take something *incredibly useful* , and go to a college that will give me something I couldn’t have given myself alone. ( I want to create a website for writers, an online e-commerce boutique, my own anime inspired clothing line, and an in-person v-steaming business with an online shop.) Any advice?

I am 25 and just started to go to school on the spring of this year. No matter how many videos I watch or how many questions I ask myself, I can’t figure out for the life of me what career I could see myself getting let alone what I want to study. This might not seem relevant, but I’ve been sober since Jan 2019. My whole life I’ve been numbing myself, so I don’t even know what it is that I like or who I am even. My first year of sobriety was basically me just trying to survive living without drugs and alcohol and now I have an opportunity to live. I feel pressured to pick something soon because I really want to get out of the cycle of living pay check to pay check. There seems to be so many obstacles in the way and I’m determined to overcome them. I have type 1 diabetes along with ADHD and a mood disorder. Everything in my path I truly believe makes me a more emphatic individual but it’s difficult to cope sometimes. Okay, vent over. It’s nice to vent and let it all out in a little corner of the internet haha. I feel like an ant on the wall that made a little peep and the person in the room can’t figure out where the sound came from 😂😂

I'm not a professional, but deducing from your picks youre probably a people person, which means you could go into marketing or be a finance assistant. also, since you mentioned learning about different cultures you could check out funding countries to help development or disaster funds for them. i wouldn't recommend making your hobby (guitar, soccer) your job unless youre extremely passionate about it and know that you won't burn out. if youre thinking of economics, i wouldnt worry too much about the math part as it's mostly basic stuff and you won't have to do much in the actual job. hope this helps!

Whenever my mind is not occupied I find myself stressing over my future sometimes I even cry just because I don't see anything when I think of my future. I am an honor student but I was always lazy and procrastinating. You're really changing me, giving me courage and teaching me how to prepare myself. One thing's kind of bugging me tho. Recently I came across ADHD and I decided to research it and based on my research most of its symptoms have been present in me since I was young. Will it give me a hard time in college? Right now in highschool I can get by even though im mostly not able to focus on classes and forgetting to do many assignments and some projects. But im in a very generous school in terms of grades so even after all that Im still an honor student.

Pros: Technology (hardware) Math, Physics Teaching, learning, writing, reading General knowledge Absolute pro at biology (I study at a high school that trains kids for entrance examinations for Medicine and Engineering, and though I'm in the Engineering class, I'm better at biology than most of those kids preparing for Medicine) Soceital/Economic studies(stats, sociology, psychology, economics, epidemiology) Cons: Chemistry Drawing Don't want to and know to code Bored of routines (don't want to sit in a cubicle for work) Not "athletic" Don't want to handle patients. Here's what I'm looking into: Electronics and Communication Engineering with specialisation in Biomedical engineering in the best college in my country which is 3 miles from my house B.planning in one of the better colleges (I got 97.3 percentile in that exam) and I quite like the concept of it. Statistics/Data analysis but I'm not too sure of it. I'm also open to suggestions for other engineering courses in the college. It's called VIT. It's quite good. What are your thoughts?

I’m dyslexic, despite being a national merit scholar and great student in high school, I really regret going to a prestigious/HARD AF school. It’s really hard to understand your limitations while you are in high school, because high schools don’t even come close to reflecting college environments. If you are dyslexic and you are reading this, consider more options in college rather than the prestige of the school. Consider schools that are accommodative, have high student to faculty ratios, and are known for address students needs.

I'm (unfortunately) transgender so I'm not really as safe leaving the U.S. as I'd like to be. I was born and raised here and I've discovered through moving that I do NOT know how to exist outside of an urban environment whatsoever. The only luxury I think I'll ever want is maybe a motorcycle some years down the line. • I am HORRENDOUS at math, to the point where I actually don't have the best GPA & colleges aren't super keen on me. Don’t go to a college based on what you want to major in. Choose a school based on fit and overall good academics. I’d guess more than half of people completely change their major

I’m in high school. The only thing I’m good and passionate about is drama. However I don’t want to stick with six figures and a barista job. Any thoughts?
@ShaneHummus4 жыл бұрын
Step 1: Learn a marketable skill that you can make GOOD money with, get a good paying job (web development, coding, sales etc). Preferably this would be a job within the industry of drama, but if you can't find a job within the industry then just go for one that pays really well and also teaches you skills that you can later use in that field. Step 2: Figure out an alternative way to pursue your passion. For instance, make a youtube channel that talks about drama/theatre. Or a podcast, or a blog, or a consulting business in the drama industry. Step 3: Do your business as a side hustle and once you have 1 year of personal expenses saved up and you're already making a decent amount of money from your business (at least $1k a month), then quit your job and turn your side hustle into a full time gig.

You could also see about learning a trade you’re interested in in order to pay for money. Vocational school tends to be shorter and cost less than college, and with that extra money and time without so much debt, you can use your spare time to pursue drama. And even if it doesn’t work out, you have something to fall on, even if you decide to go to college for another degree. That’s my take on it anyway

hey Shane! I’m going to be a sophomore in college and I’m super stressed about what major to choose. One thing I know for sure is that I want an interpersonal career, something where I get to interact with people and help them. I always assumed I would go the business route (perhaps sales as I’ve been told I would be good at it) because it’s a huge field, but I applied to my colleges business school and didn’t get in. The other major I’m leaning towards is kinesiology. I love learning about the mechanics of the body, I’m big into weightlifting, and I’m getting my personal training certification. If I were to major in kinesiology I would most likely go down the physical therapy route, but I’m just not sure if I can mentally commit to that yet. I’m open to other health careers as well. Sorry for this rant but my semester is about to start and I’m signed up for a bunch of classes I don’t plan on taking :/. any guidance would be much appreciated!!!
@ShaneHummus4 жыл бұрын
Business degree would be good. If you plan on going the PT route make sure you get a good undergraduate degree in case plans change. Kinesiology doesn't have good numbers, wouldn't recommend.
@maisie11204 жыл бұрын
I got all A*s at GCSE and I mostly loved physics, history, philosophy and computer science. I decided to go down the history/philosophy route and now I’m about to pursue my degree in history and politics. If I saw this a few years ago I may have reconsidered, but I’d like a job relating to ethics/law/politics, somewhere I can voice my opinion. I felt quite restricted with science/maths based subjects in this regard. I like debate, but those subjects just didn’t satisfy that for me. Not sure what career I’d exactly like to go down/what masters I’d like to do, so if anyone has suggestions I’d be grateful! But I’m currently getting an internship set up by my family friend who’s currently doing an economics masters degree and works in government/council, so I’m focusing on getting experience and networking. And for money on the side, which I can hopefully build up a lot, I’m looking into investing!

Hey first time watcher and now subscriber. Question for you: before identifying interests, how do you decide what an interest is? Sounds like a very obvious questioning - I know. I mean, there a lot of things that interest me that I haven't done or done enough of, but that interest me (e.g. - volunteering). It's hard to decide for me even when it comes to the obvious examples in mind. Maybe I'm OCD or suffer from decision fatigue, but I have a hard time gathering a list of interests knowing it's a list for my potential future career. Another example would be research. I love doing it on my own (how I came across this great channel), but never done it in a professional setting. So what I guess I'm trying to say is: How would I know how to apply my interests into a potential field I've never had experience in and know I would enjoy it in the long run?
@ShaneHummus4 жыл бұрын
That's the tough part and it just takes time. I think the big thing is keep an open mind, try out a bunch of stuff, then just be really honest with yourself on which things you enjoyed. It takes time and effort. Cheers!

I don't know if this is an american thing, but my whole life I have never heard in my country say they are "passionate" about their work. Maybe you covered this in other videos, I'm definitely subscribing and checking them out , but one has to take in consideration how realistic their job market is . Like how many people want to dance for a living and such, there are a lot of people that want to do that and very few jobs that actually exist .

On the median pay list, health sciences, kinesiology, and communication sciences & disorders (pre-speech pathology) wasn't listed. :( Those are rarely listed on charts. I guess it's because usually people who get those degrees go straight on to grad school and, if not, they end up in a different field unrelated to their degree. It's also pretty sad that education is the lowest. But anyways, I really appreciate videos like this! I've watched a ton and come to the decision of speech pathology. I'm empathetic, patient, and enjoy helping others. I'm not great at math but I do enjoy science. I want a somewhat comfortable lifestyle, so the income works for me! I used to want to do recreational therapy, and although I think it's the perfect job for me, the salary would not support my future goals. & my most intense interests are space, anthropology, and psychology...but like you said, I don't plan to actually work in those fields, so getting a degree in them wouldn't really help me!

I stuck with a boring degree I defaulted into and only am watching all this career planning 3 years out from graduation. In my defense the only stuff I was watching in 2014 on youtube were cringy memes. I think people put way too much pressure on picking a degree when outside of highly technical jobs, on the job skills are way more important than theory.

I ended up in a field called Risk Management after doing an Economics degree. Honestly was fairly bad at Math in high school in comparison to my peers. In University though I ended up liking Math a lot and ended up with a Minor in it. My high school experience in Math was abject boredom - I really liked History in high school but realized as a employable field not so good.. So ended up in Economics as I thought it would be a good mix of Social Science and Math. My real passion was astronomy though but thought Physics was to hard.. Though at one point I looked at a Quantum I Physics textbook and it didn't look much different to some of my Econ math heavy courses :/
@60sbabydoll7772 жыл бұрын
this is actually really inspiring to me. I just graduated high school and im thinking of studying economics although I was never bad at math I wasn't particularly great at it either. what would you recommend I add on to my economics major (pls don't say math or statistics lol)
@vSimCO2 жыл бұрын
@@60sbabydoll777 Just mentioning Math at first since Economics especially at the graduate level is filled with it. The key to Math is practice - not just monotonous same question practice - but tackling different problems and it's alright to make mistakes while practicing. Onto other majors to pair with - what comes to mind is basically anything and go to Law school. Maybe a major which focuses on technical writing - or with a writing component as communixating ideas and information is crucial. Computer Science would work extremely well with an emphasis on Data Science that's getting close to that Math/Stats fields. If you do something finance adjacent - accounting might be useful just for reading financial statements otherwise I would stay away.

This is my whole situation, if you are interested: I was supposed to study only piano, because I’ve been playing it since I was 4 and i was known as a child prodigy in my hometown. Studying Environmental Engineering was my attempt to make something more of myself than that. Now I am at two different universities and additionally I work on the side too so I can save up some money too because I want to be financially independent from my parents but it’s too much. I don’t want to define myself with only one thing. Life is far too precious for that. I can’t let go but I can’t go on too..what should I do? Follow your heart or be more determined isn’t going to work here.
