Great video. I only started reading comics halfway through the year, so i only knew about half the books. Really gotta check some of those out. For me when i look back I'd say Ain't No Grave might be among the top of my list. Great art and really deep story. Def surprised to see both DWJ’s books in the ignoble hon. mentions list, alongside Ram V’s stunning run on Tec. Although I appreciate that we may have separate taste, I come back for your thoughtful commentary. Btw, have you been reading The Power Fantasy?
@ComicCulture2 күн бұрын
@@nicholasrapp6385 transformers has been great but I feel like if you weren't raised on it or are familiar with the characters and the backstories, you're missing a little bit of the magic of that series. With that said the art is incredible and it's a thoughtful story. Moon is following us only has a couple issues out, which have been great which is why it made the honorable mention but not book of the year just based on quantity. I read the first two issues of power fantasy and couldn't get into it. Ram has a couple books on my top 50 so he's doing just fine lol

I can't wait for the Universal Monsters series to be collected. I'm still loving Conan and Transformers and enjoyed the recently wrapped Joshua Williamson Green Arrow. Aliens / Avengers is much better then I thought it would be with surprisingly a good grasp of Alien lore. The Absolute line is off to a very promising start. Babs by Garth Ennis is the perfect sword & sorcery satire. A much more toned down story then his usual fare, I will finally finish a Ennis book for the first time ever. 😅 Loved the Duke and Cobra Commander minis.

Ultimate Spider-Man is very overrated. I don’t agree. FRANKENSTEIN is wonderful. I’m in full agreement there. TRANSFORMERS is outstanding! It should have been one of your top titles. SHAZAM 1-9 written by Mark Waid and illustrated by Dan Mora is superb! Too bad Waid took on other projects and his run in Shazam was cut short. I highly recommend those issues. DUKE. Nuff said. Excellent mini. WORLD’S FINEST: again ( Mark Waid and Dan Mora) it has been consistently excellent for over two years now!!

Have to disagree with the notion of doing away with continuity. It's antithetical to creating investment and lifelong fans. A good writer who's confident in their ability will see it as tool they can draw from and not a hinderance. The reason you see so many showing open disdain for continuity today is because they don't have the same love for the medium as the giants who's shoulders they're standing on.
@ComicCulture2 күн бұрын
@@rickymcn1 I'm just imagining a situation where whenever creative talent is hired, they're able to tell the story they've always wanted to tell, the way they wanted to tell it. Not being bogged down by making sure characters start at a certain place and end in another. Deadlines that force art teams to shift mid-Arc wouldn't be a thing. Having to create three or four issues of filler between events wouldn't be a thing. It would just be in theory distilled great stories that still can play off of each other but aren't bogged down by specific timelines or editorial expectations
@ComicCulture2 күн бұрын
@@rickymcn1 I read some of these books and I can't help but think that there's no way the writer was dying to tell THAT story. Some of these folks have been waiting their whole life for an opportunity to write for the big two or whoever, and they're not able to tell the story they want because of the continuity shackles. But maybe I'm way off. I love the conversation so thank you for bringing it up!!
@rickymcn12 күн бұрын
@@ComicCulture I sincerely believe it's just a talent issue. If there's a story a writer wants to tell they shouldn't ham-fist it into a book who's decades of continuity would conflict with it or they should tweak it to work. Those 3-4 issues between events would be a great place for single issue stories that we'd get in the old days!. Once again though that's a talent issue. Better yet, write it for an original character at a "smaller" publisher. I put "smaller" in quotations because most of the legit talent and best books haven't been at the big 2 in some time. To be clear though, you aren't way off at all. We've seen the benefits of writing outside of continuity with elseworlds, What If and the Ultimate Universe (Millar's one. I'm not too keen on the new one.) It's just that the cons outweigh the pros for me. Think of it this way, every single great Marvel event has had decades of continuity to deal with but the the talent pool was way deeper. This. isthe great thing about comics though. As long as you're willing to invest a little time we'll always have something to read and entertain us. Oh, great list by the way.

"There's never been a comic like Ice Cream Man". Bro's never read a single issue of Creepy or Eerie Magazine? Or literally any of the EC Comics run. Ice Cream Man is a cookie cutter re-creation of all that stuff.

Having read all of Ice Cream Man this year I think it has deeply personal, emotional & philosophical components that a lot of other horror comics are missing, for better or worse.
