Went on a CA highway patrol internship half a year ago. I went on a ride along with one of the officers and he let me use the radar gun. They can get you from 1000 meters out, and are extremely accurate as long as you have a steady hand.

Just to let you guys know there is a difference between the laser being calibrated and it being checked for accuracy. The first officer said it was calibrated two months ago, but the accuracy of the device was checked when he started his shift at 6am.

For the record, the "calibration" on a LIDAR or radar unit is usually done annually, and can only be done by a certified shop. The calibration is tested (or should be) for accuracy at the beginning of shift. They are two different things.

You got to appreciate cops who are good sports while doing their duty. Without them, everybody who brakes any road laws would just get a ticket and that's no bueno. Just be complaint and cut them some slack (that's basically their job) and hopefully they will do too as the driver's attitude is generally what sets the pace of the conversation (unless you did something really bad on the road).
