I make my Firman Tri-Fuel a little quieter by making a tent out of two 4x4 sheets of plywood. Lean them against the two sides to deflect the sound to the ground. Trying to line up the plug with the inlet at night? Take a marker, or white-out, and make a line on the plug & socket to line up the two before you twist it. Keep battery charged. Install emergency lights that come on when power goes out. Install them where you set up the generator and at the panel. Have an extra spark plug. Maintenance is easier when using natural gas to power the generator. The oil town I live near is Houston.

Hey thanks for the reviews on this generator. Decided to upgrade my 20 year old gen this year to a propane set up and went with this model. FYI found it on ebays firman store on sale for 499. It was refurbished by firman but came with 2year warranty. Thats delivered. Keep a eye out for the ebay sales and save some $$

I live in SE Fla. I purchased this for $699 June 2021. I run it on reg gas. My suggestions for others that ONLY use it for Hurricane power outage backup. Like all my gas eng equipment that’s for emergency use during a season like Hurricane. After using it and preparing it for a hopefully long term outage. Drain the gas tank of gas. Run the engine to drain the carb and fuel lines. Drop the carburetor fuel bowl and empty any remaining gas and reinstall. Lastly. Pull the spark pull and add a 1/4 cup of engine oil. Slowly rotate the engine using the pull cord a few good revolutions. Install the spark plug and remove the battery power lead. Pull the start cord over slowly every quarter. Charge the battery a few times a year, but don’t trickle or otherwise leave it charging. Do these simple things and it can sit for years if stored out of the weather. I’ve got 50 years experience doing this. Starting it every few months is wasteful and a pain, but will also work. Side comment: Firman now says fuel use is 12 hrs for 8 gallons at 25% load. They did say 50% load 3 years ago. Nobody has published or shared actual gasoline usage from use under higher loads or any measured avg load. So at 60-80% average power, it’s anyone’s guess how long it runs on an 8 gal tank.

I have the grey one that I purchased in April 2022. I just had to run my house for almost 4 hours a few days ago. It ran my central AC with no problem, on both propane and gasoline. Good job on the 50amp upgrade. That is what I went with from the beginning. It runs great.

The manual will have a long-term storage process. If you do not need it for months on end, consider placing it into long term storage mode. That is similar to the way it was stored prior to you buying it. I do this for my 1998 Generac XL5500. Last summer when I ran a test, I checked the oil, added Stabilized gas, and it started on the first pull. Ran it under load, then placed it back into long term storage mode. As for your Generator interlock at the Pannel. I might not always be home when power is needed. So, I wrote a protocol to follow, placed it next to the breaker box and taught my family to follow the protocol. That way, during an emergency, it is not a guess as to whether I started things up correctly, I just follow the steps in the protocol.

Did you place it inside an enclosure to protect it from rain, water, heat etc?
@gibblespascack14186 ай бұрын
@@spirokalu Yes, it stays in the corner of my out building with its box covering it. That keeps it from getting dusty during its downtime. It is down for at most one year, when I do its yearly test run. Then it goes back into storage. At 26, it still started on the first pull last summer. I will have to run it again this summer under load for a little while.

If you’re connecting to the house through the panel, unbond the neutral. Pop the black cover off the back of the alternator, locate the output wire terminals, you’ll see the white wire coupled with a jumper to frame ground. Disconnect that jumper to ground. Your gfci breakers will thank you.

Adding a safety to your fuse box is smart. Simple slide safety, to switch on the fuse to the generator you have to turn off the main and it blocks the main from being closed. Tag out so you can’t backfeed the power lines coming into your home.

Not any of the reading research I’ve done, especially if you’re running longer you need that volume in order to feed the generator at the right pressure when it gets compressed going into the generator. I’ve had lots of people on here. Tell me they used three-quarter inch without an issue, especially for longer runs.

Thanks for the video it is extremely informative. I am upgrading my 5000 watt Craftsman generator converted for Propane to the Firman 7500. Did you remove the flared 3/8” fitting on the unit to install the bigger one for the longer hose or just use adapters to step it up. I use a 20 foot 3/4 hose similar to the one you use for natural gas to connect to my inground propane tank. My other question is how do you prime the long hose. My conversion kit has a prime button on the back but the Firman does not. Thanks so much for your help. Jeff
@TOOLMANTIMSWORKSHOP Жыл бұрын
I used adapters to step it up, because it really doesn’t matter as long as you have for feed all the way to the generator generator steps that gas way down to a tiny jet anyway

I'm two years into my Costco Firman dual fuel. I have a 5 ton AC and put a soft start on it. The AC starts up and runs for about 5 to 10 minutes then I hear the generator bog and it dies. At first I thought it was something else kicking on and causing it but I turned off every breaker but the AC and it still did it two more times. Not sure what is going on but it don't run the AC for very long. My AC neighbor said it was the AC not seeing stable voltage but to me its the compressor that is bogging and dyeing so not sure that is the AC causing the issue as he states. What say you?

I don't know if you'll read this because it's a bit of an older video but I was wondering if you have any tips for starting the generator on NG. I find it always takes me a while of cranking and waiting around until it finally goes, and I think it may be due to the air in the 25 feet 1/2" hose. Is there any good way to purge the hose?
@TOOLMANTIMSWORKSHOP Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for messaging me. I appreciate that I struggle with the same thing and yes I think because natural gas is not high pressure. It takes a little while for the house to get through. I find it helps a little bit by trying to make sure you don’t have any tight turns in the house and kind of spread it out a little bit so it’s stretched out but if you have it all bunched up that can restrict the flower bed but it’s just a matter of physics really, I tend to actually start mine on natural gas or propane first get it warmed up and then switch over to gasoline. Sometimes if I’m running it on gasoline, just burn the junk out of the carburetor.

Thx for the video! I’m enjoying the same Gen. Question - when you run it through its paces what kind of load to you put on it?
@TOOLMANTIMSWORKSHOP Жыл бұрын
Typically either an angle grinder or a 1500 W heat gun figure that will put enough of the load on a 110 outlet to at least let me know things are working there and then I’ll put the splitter into the twist lock plug and check each of those as well

Great video but I have a question about the little ground screw under the 30amp plug. I checked the manual and it says consult with an electrician. Do I need to use this ground to be able to run my furnace or other appliances? I bought the Dual Fuel model, now $1299.99 cad shipping included
@nathantravanti3408 Жыл бұрын
Most likely no, but maybe. Does your ground in cord and receptacle connection for that 240 plug connect back to the panel? You can do a continuity check with a meter. If it does you don't need the stud. If it doesn't you need to bond it to the panel somehow. If you don't know what I'm talking about in the slightest look up how grounding works, or do as the manual says and consult and electrician. You probably don't need to connect it, but you could create a hazardous connection for yourself and sensitive electronics if don't probably ground the generator frame with the building electrical system.

@TOOLMANTIMSWORKSHOP Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. You get the most power out of gas, next is propane then natural gas. But gas is the hardest to store. My personal system is I use natural gas because it’s convient and simple and a little less smelly. But I keep a significant amount of gas on hand as well for worst case scenerios I just rotate the gas. If it helps when you have time chekc out my generator playlist I go into details on a lot of these topics in it. kzbin.info/aero/PLqwMYzk2_P_4E7GFhsUzbL5j_6mCZ4K1T

14%THD is high. I wouldn't trust anything over 10% at most. 5% or under is ideal.....
@Spo83 ай бұрын
What does it mean in practical terms to have higher THD like that?
@Ozzie4Para3 ай бұрын
@@Spo8 THD is basically harmonics that are produced by the actual generator piece itself and not the actual engine. Think of it as noise levels so in this case the less noise then better. High noise levels or in this case high THD levels aren't normally a problem for simple items like light bulbs or power tools or even basic types of electric motors. But that all changes when you factor in things like laptop computers or high end TVs that have electronic parts on the inside that can be very sensitive to these noise levels aka THD. I have some pretty pricey items in my house like a couple LG OLED TVs, a refrigerator that has an inverter compressor and a few laptop and desktop computers. There would be no way in hell I would ever run any generator with high THD levels like whats shown in this video. Would the generator power my devices mentioned? Absolutely....... But the real question is for how long until something breaks inside one of the devices. I damn sure won't take that chance.............
@Spo83 ай бұрын
@@Ozzie4Para Thanks, I’ve been wondering about this too given how common it seems to be for people to use non-inverter generators like this as whole home backups. Given that almost all of them likely have smart TVs and computers, are they all damaging their electronics doing that?
@Ozzie4Para3 ай бұрын
@@Spo8 No one knows for sure if they are damaging their devices. What I do know is I'm not willing to take any chances with my nice electronic items. I suppose I wouldn't care if I had cheap TVs from Walmart inside my home. But like I mentioned above, I don't. I have a couple LG OLED TVs which aren't cheap.
@avguytx436124 күн бұрын
@@Ozzie4Para Most of what you wrote about items worried about high THD is BS. TV's, computers, laptops, and other electronics similar to this are made to ship world wide. Think about the crap power grids in India, Turkey, etc., that are all over the place. I was a manufacturers rep for home A/V & car audio lines for about 10 years plus was in the business for 25 years in all. I'm currently a city network administrator so I deal with all sorts of power stuff. Think about it...Generac and Kohler have made stand alone generators for YEARS that people have hooked into their houses. If high THD was a major thing and killed all these "sensitive" electronics, wouldn't there have been mention of it somewhere? Most of the stuff out there about high THD, inverters are best, etc., are marketing hype. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Inverter generators are great because they are better with fuel and do have cleaner power. But the "other" generators aren't going anywhere anytime soon and people will continue to use them on their houses for YEARS to come. Just like 20 year old Honda generators that were, you guessed it, non inverter.
