Today, the typical social security benefit is about $1,827 per month, with the maximum at $3,627 per month. Considering the average cost of living for an American is between $2,500 and $3,500 per month on the low end, your social security benefits alone likely won’t get you very far in retirement. However, more and more Americans are choosing to retire abroad and take advantage of the low cost of living offered by certain countries. But as you can imagine, retiring abroad is no small feat - and finding the best countries to retire in can be even harder. So today on Across the Globe we’re going to look at the best countries to retire on a small pension or social security.

It's worrying that big financial firms could own 40% or more of homes, squeezing out the middle class. Most folks should hold onto their homes if they can. I'm thinking of buying cheap houses in 2024 and maybe trying stocks too. When's the best time for stocks? Some say it's profitable, others say it's risky. Any advice?

Accurate asset allocation is crucial. Some use hedging or defensive assets in their portfolio for market downturns. Seeking financial advice is vital. This approach has kept me financially secure for over five years, with a return on investment of nearly $1 million.

Retirees who find it hard to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough savings during their active years. Retirement choices determine a lot of things. My parents both spent same years in the civil service, but my mom was investing through a asset manager, and my dad through the 401k. My mom retired with about ‘4.2M’, but my dad retired with roughly '$1.8M’.

I believe it's particularly challenging for retirees and those close to retirement. All those years of labor only to lose it all to a problem you weren't responsible for, my regrets to everyone retiring during this time.

It depends on your preferences and comfort level. However, a great option is to keep things simple and consult an asset manager. They can help you determine your risk appetite, avoid common mistakes, and provide a broader perspective on your investment landscape. I have about ($1.25m) in non-retirement assets. Compared to the whole value of my portfolio during the last three years, I have no debt and a very little in retirement accounts. To be completely honest, the information provided by managers can only be ignored but not neglected. Simply undertake research to choose a trustworthy one.

My initial vision for retirement involved stepping back from full-time work at the age of 62, transitioning into part-time employment, and diligently saving money for the golden years ahead. Unfortunately, this well-laid plan has encountered unexpected challenges due to the soaring costs of living. The current economic landscape has cast a shadow over my retirement aspirations, prompting me to ponder whether those who weathered the 2008 financial crisis faced less formidable hurdles than I currently confront..............

The pervasive inflationary pressures have disrupted my financial equilibrium, leaving me grappling with uncertainties about the adequacy of my retirement nest egg. The stock market's volatility has become a source of apprehension, as my income has dwindled, making it increasingly difficult to maintain the savings trajectory I had envisioned. The disheartening reality is that my ability to contribute meaningfully to my retirement fund has been hampered by these unforeseen economic challenges.............

Even with the right technique and assets some investors would still make more than others. As an investor, you should've known that by now that nothing beats experience and that's final. Personally I had to reach out to a stock expert for guidance which is how I was able to grow my account close to $35k, withdraw my profit right before the correction and now I'm buying again.

I am Polish. For 2 thousand dollars you can live with dignity for two people. A beautiful country, with smiling and happy people. One of the safest countries in the world With wildlife and infrastructure from the 21st century. All young people and many med age people speak English .What else you need to be happy Healthe care system we call bad but compare to Usa is briallent . Ps Greece is no longer a good place. The large number of emigrants and the bleak future disqualify this country. The same with Spain, Italy and France. The poor emigration policy and American wars in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen and many others resulted in emigration and crime. Poles closed the borders against these criminals and we have a safe country. We accept 20,000 legal refugees from Africa every year who want to work and study. The streets in Poland are also colorful. Only honest people of color and Asians. Let us show what we are ? FIRST by the fact that privates , ordinary people, on their own maney we have took more then 2 million strangers and have supported them, Nobody asked about money .Without knowing whether anyone would pay them back the money they have spent. Don't you want to live among such a nation who will help in any situations ? It was we who defended England in London, it was we who died in Africa, it was Poles who fought all over the world for American and British interests. We are stupid ? No we know what means friendship and honour

As a Portuguese, take off those rosy coloured glasses and take a good look around the country, don't burn the bridges behind you, you mention safety, this country has the highest crime in the EU, it's just not mentioned for tourism sakes, if you end up seriously hurt in hospital you will probably die there, smart Portuguese either pay a high premium for foreign doctors or travel to Spain for treatment, you are taxed 23% for everything you buy, i kid you not, buying a property, you start to accrue capital gains from day one payable when you sell then on top of the other taxes you will pay an extra 30% foreigner tax (unconfirmed as the gov keeps changing this) and don't forget the bureaucracy, Salazar is laughing in his grave, the country is being overrun with low IQ immigrants that are ruining the country, remember with your accent you will draw attention to yourself, choose wisely your desired location, avoid sleepy towns or old farm with a farm house, a busy tourist area is best to assimilate, welcome to Portugal where more of it's citizens live out of the country than in.

I get seriously ill at below 100 F already, and since these countries all go well over that in many summer months, that's a no-go for me. The only country to retire to that I recommend is the Philippines. You can stay there 3 years at a time before having to leave for one day and come back and start over unless you can apply for a retirement Visa or Permanent resident visa. Also rent is cheap and mostly all the apartments, condo's and house are fully or partially furnished. Realitivly safe unlike Mexico.

dealbreaker on Thailand for me is visa requirements, Buddhism, and language barrier. it’s true they have Philippines beat in the other areas you mentioned- it all boils down to which of those things are more important to you.I’ve heard the same horror stories of Thai women scammers too - I’m married for seven years to a Filipina, it’s hard to trust any women in any country now if you marry a western woman in the United States she will play the long con on you too and you will lose your ass when she leaves you - it’s WAY cheaper to get played in Southeast Asia unless you’re stupid enough to bring her back to your country 😂😂😂

I also like the fact that most places have English signs like freeways billboards 7-11stores everywhere lots of American franchises here so if you get tired of Filipino food your wife cooks for you there’s shakeys pizza, kfc, Burger King, McDonald’s, -can’t stand jollibee burgers 😊 visa not too expensive but still pain in the ass going to immigration but easier I’ve heard than Thailand Just need to accept incessantly barking dogs loud karaoke at night traffic nightmares humidity trash everywhere 😂😂 you can survive 😊

Philippines is a very corrupt country its a poverty stricken 3rd world country, it. has a terrible infrastructure, constant power outages, reckless danger driving, many Filipino scammers, renting an apt is troublesome, Filipino will over charge you its called skin tax, you may not get your deposit back, also your nieghbor may be tapping into your electric line, garbage everywhere, people urinating in the streets, I lived there for 3 years and I had to move out because Philippines is toxic society, low IQ of 80, medical care is terrible, very slow pace, waiting in line for over 30 minutes or more.

I’ve been diligently working, saving and contributing towards financial freedom and early retirement, but the economy so far since the pandemic has eaten away most of my portfolio, what I want to know is this: Do I keep contributing to my portfolio in these unstable markets or do I look into alternative sectors.

Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.

Where you live also matters. I have managed my own investments almost 30 years now. It was the only way I could manage on social security disability. I have a more accurate diagnosis and am finally getting effective treatment. I am studying for licensing and one thing to be aware of is that you are not necessarily allowed to be an investment advisor for people who live somewhere else. For example, I don't just need to get licensed nationally, but by my state here in the United States.

While this is not investment advice, I will comment that if you are not able to find an advisor who is particularly good, a low expense, low or no load mutual fund that tracks a major index like the S&P 500, or the Wilshire 5000 can be useful. But if I personally were opening a new account to do this I would not put a single large sum into the market, especially now, but dollar cost average in if I were to be making diversified investments rather than a specific opportunity. But this is just me, and you do need to do your own research because what I like might not be good for you.

From 2012 to 2020 I lived in Costa Rica with a cost of living, including rent, motorcycle insurance, food, dinning, water and light was about $480/month. I didn't live in a large city and the closest one was 45 minutes away. I married a Costa Rican and now we're back in the states for my job. God willing I'll be back in 5 years. I now have land in CR. $1,200 in CR and you're more than set, unless you just have to live in a large city and have the "finer things". By the way the house I was rent had a pool I paid $122 a/month. Is CR safe? Not really, neither are any of the countries on the list, however I see CR as the least dangerous country.

For the Thailand "O" visa (applied for in Thailand), you do not need to pass a health check, criminal background check or have health insurance. Those are requirements for the "OA" visa (applied for in your home country). The Non "OA" also lets you show proof of funds that can be kept in your home country, but you will need to have proof of health insurance for the year. I will be applying for the Non "OA" in a few months and until I know Thailand where I want to live, I really want to keep the $23K here in the US. Also, to use the 65,000 baht per month method ($1900ish), that needs to be shown over a 12-month period first. Great video!

@@alexjames6747 Hello Alex, Sounds like you’re living a fabulous life which is lovely. You conjure up a fine mental picture on the idilic escape. Here in the UK everything is “crazy” expensive and we work the longest hours in Europe, to highest age on low wages, high taxes and the lowest pension in Europe. Health care though “free at the point of delivery” is rationed out unfairly and getting an appointment for anything is maddening as you have to wait an age for a doctor’s or hospital appointment. The elderly are treated appallingly here and are treated as burdens to the state along with the sick and or the disabled. We have monumental problems here with illegal immigration from the third world with thousands of undocumented fit young males are ferried into British waters from France aided and abetted by UK government along border farces and R.N.L.I . Illegals are treated better than anyone put up in “fantastic” high end hotels which the average person could only dream of living. All of course while our own people get little to no help. Homelessness is a major problem here and it’s terrible the way these people are treated. I could write on the problems here in the UK for the next several days or weeks without stopping but I’ll stop for now.Pretty much most of Europe is becoming a powder keg which could ignite at any time. I am retired and living in Costa Rica, it is not cheap it is the second most expensive country in all of Latin America. It is 47% more expensive than Mexico!. Narcos have taken over making for high crime, corruption and Costa Rica now is the country with the highest export of cocaine. The medical care is not cheap; I pay $450 (based on my income) to the government (Caja),but it takes months to years to get an appointment based on need. I now use private healthcare but I still have to pay the Government Medical at $450 a month. Restaurants, wines, cars, electronics, just about every retail item is 20 to 40% more expensive than in US. People here are nice but all of Latin Americans are just as nice. Good Luck in your retirement research but go visit , look around, and decide what are your retirement goals and reality of achieving them wherever you retire.

Losers cry when you do the math; subtract from retirement age the age of adulthood; 65 - 18 = 47 years. Now tell us all here & now a person cannot $$$ in 47 (gosh darn) years. NO excuses people; tired of that 'so and so is on a fixed income' hogwash.

You are correct. If you work for large companies, you get pensions or 401ks. You can also contribute to an IRA. The people with low incomes did not go to college, which a degree, even in junior college increases your opportunity of higher paying employment.

I'm a Norwegian who basically my whole adult life have found it impossible to live in my own city of Stavanger on a normal salary. When I lost my wife due to her kicking me out and keeping the kids and so much of my low income, I decided to go first to Thailand and then to the Philippines. First of all to find love again, and I found it finally after several failures, in Mindanao Philippines, where I have stayed for the last 7 years. Now I am back in Thailand, planning to bring my new family here, and later on to Europe. Norway is too complicated with all their demands for bringing my wife there, so I am contemplating Sweden or Spain as an option. If you are willing to live outside of the big cities, you can basically get affordable living in most parts of the world, so if I were a US citizen, I would maybe move to a small town and try my luck there. But finding a good wife is on the agenda of many middle aged and older men, and then the Philippines seem to be a winner in that aspect. They also have a very generous and simple visa system, just go there and stay up to 3 years as a tourist on arrival status. But due to problems making some additional income in the Philippines, I want to bring my wife and kid to Europe.

This video is a joke. I can live for less in the U.S. than many of the "estimates" stated in this video. Why would I go to all this hassle to live on $2,500 to $3,000 per month in another country when I could stay in the United States for even less than this video asserts the cost to be elsewhere? Was this video designed to discourage moving abroad? Just asking. This was some pretty silly crap.

If you are at least 50 years old,Cambodia offers a retirement visa for $300 per year. The Philippines is very cheap living if you don't require the best of everything. I rent a one bedroom airconditioned apartment in a gated complex with a caretaker for $180 per month in Cebu, Philippines. No, there is not a pool or gym at that price, but I am right in the Cebu City Metro Area and there are 6 shopping malls within 2 km. Anything you want can be delivered to your doorstep here cheaply.

My biggest concern is do those countries have due process comparable to the United States. I know it's not perfect here either but I want to avoid winding up in a situation where I can't talk to a lawyer if something happens. I am always careful to obey the laws and would do so in another country but it still is a concern of mine.

I would advise you to travel instead of worrying. There are lots of countries where $100 will buy you out of almost any legal trouble. I have lived in Colombia for about 6 years. They don't bother giving traffic citations at all. I have never even had an occasion to speak to police. They don't jump on you for petty stuff here like they do in the US. They only get involved in real crimes. In fact, by contrast, I would call the US a Police State.

Where ever you live in the world, it's always wise to have an insurance policy for legal expenses. When you drop something on someone's foot and it won't heal, your insurance companies pays for those costs, minus a small own part of a few hundred dollars. The advise of dan seems very frivolous. I wouldn't trust in that. And what kind of a mean country to its own citizens would that be.
