Hi, Karen, I see it’s been a few years since you posted this review, but I wanted to comment anyway because this month marks a milestone in my crochet journey and you have just impacted me in a way I never would have imagined. This month marks the 55th year since I started learning to crochet, and it has been my go-to hobby ever since. But like you, I learned with Boye hooks and almost never deviated except for an afghan hook and some steel hooks that had belonged to one of my grandmothers and for one single Susan Bates which I tried and absolutely detested. I learned to crochet while I was in high school. Fast-forward a few years to when I was a young wife and first-time mom-to-be. I wanted to make a sleeper for my anticipated child, and I found a pattern I loved; it was made with baby yarn and something like a size B hook - best of all, it was done in a ‘new’ stitch I’d never worked before, giving me a chance to try something new. But I wasn’t at home, and the town I was visiting had very few crochet supply options; the only hook in the size I was looking for was a Susan Bates. I figured it would work just fine - but when I started using it I was somehow unable to make it do much of anything I wanted it to do. The head was more pointed than my Boye hooks, and it kept jabbing into and splitting the already-thin yarn - when it decided to grab the yarn at all. I wasn’t familiar with the in-line design and couldn’t figure out how to make it actually hook the yarn; it just more or less kept sliding across the surface. It was so discouraging that I never did finish the project. So I just enjoyed my Boye hooks for roughly the next half century. Then, fast-forward again. My grandson’s fiancée recently learned to crochet, and she’s become obsessed with it. When I asked what she wanted for her birthday earlier this year, she knew I was the perfect person to ask for something related to crochet; and so she asked for the Clover Amour hooks, which I’d never heard of. When I got them, I was intrigued by the handles; they looked really comfortable. This led me to start watching reviews, and it didn’t take long to see they’d become a universal favorite. I eventually decided to enter the current century, and I ordered some; they just arrived, so I haven’t tried them out yet; but I have my project all lined up, waiting for them. However, in all the reviews I watched, even though many people seem to really like Susan Bates, you are absolutely the only person who has convinced me I need to give Susan Bates another chance. You admitted you weren’t all that excited about them at first, though you didn’t seem to have a particular aversion to them like I’ve had. But I do think time and decades of experience have finally made me ready to buy a set and reevaluate my feelings about these hooks. So thank you for that. I have very happily subscribed to your channel because of this review.

Susan Bates have soft, ergonomic handles. In fact I have a whole set of them. You don’t have to buy an extra thing to put on the handle. They come with a soft hand handle that is easy on your hand.😊

I had a standard hook for a project and wanted it to be more ergonomic, but I started at midnight. I improvised, and grabbed athletic tape ( the stretchy kind that sticks to itself), and just wrapped the handle until it was comfortable. I planned to buy the size hook I needed with a ergonomic handle the next day, but found the tape worked so well I just kept it that way. This was a quick, inexpensive way to customize for just the feel I wanted. Thanks for your review.

I've used Boye and Susan Bates all of my crochet life. I never noticed a difference until I started following every crochet social media that I could find 😆 🤣 😂 I now love love love love Furls ❤ I have a few. They have great sales too, that'show I've gotten a couple free ones 😆 And the customer service is second to none!! I've started feeling a little arthritis in my fingers and I find the Furls to be very comfortable 😌 I use the pencil grip! I'm a new subscriber and I thank you for your content 😊

Hi Karen, I recently found your videos. I hold my crochet hook like it is a scalpel (I was told that the way I hold my hooks are neither pencil nor knife). When I first started to crochet, I used Boye hooks. But the end on the hook, because of the way I hold it, scrapped my palm. I switched to Clover hooks and I love them.

I've never had the opportunity to use a Furls hook. However, I have used the Boyd and Susan Bates hooks. I prefer the Susan Bates. The Susan Bates hooks have more of a point on the head end and the throat is deeper. I knit more than I crochet so the pointed head makes getting into my stitches easier. The deep throat makes holding on the the yarn (especially smooth yarns) easier.

In line (Susan Bates) vs tapered head (Boye), I prefer Susan Bates. I hold the hook pencil style. I’m recently trying Prym, is like a combination of in line and tapered. So far I like it.

Hi Karen, I use both pencil n knife grip. Furls work better for me w/a knife grip. I’ve used SB, Boye, Prym, Hero, Yarnology n love them all. I also have the Clover Amour but really am not a fan of them. Not sure what the hype is, but I guess most ppl love them.

I have that handle but I found the problem with it is the rubber rings that you put inside...one of mine ripped open...wish I could replace those things.

I have Arthritis in my Thumbs..Right were you said it got tired on your palm.. soo I have a M 8mm my daughter bought me. I want them to work so badly.. I'm tempted to get a 6mm but true the Neck or shank is Long.. I'd like it shorter..Oh do you have the Hobby Lobby one only they sell... its ergonomic too.. though I'd ask Thanks for the video!!
@KarenVMiguel
@KarenVMiguel 2 жыл бұрын
We don't have Hobby Lobby here in Canada, but I HIGHLY suggest that you consider getting the Boye or Susan Bate set and simply put the Boye Ergonomic handle onto either of these hooks. It allows you to keep you hand more open. For me, it doesn't trigger pain because it keeps my carpal tunnel in my wrist open and doesn't pinch the nerves in my hand. Here's the video where I discuss it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/in7dq2Vqe9Wdatk. Best of luck! (P. S. Also confirm with your medical doctors that these suggestions don't cause any harm to you.) Stay well! 🧶😊

Hello sweet Karen , I use Boye hooks. Need to find some new ones for my RA hands and wrists. Mostly like knife hold, but switch to pencil for some stitches.

Hello dear Sylvia! Have you seen my video on crochet wellness? The big ergo handle I mention fits on both the Boye and Susan Bates. I use pencil hold mostly but switch to knife for piecing things together. Here’s a link to the vid kzbin.info/www/bejne/in7dq2Vqe9Wdatk

I like my clover hooks the best , Boye is a close second. I don't have the funds for the furls. I even have my gramas hooks . Plus some generic metal ones. Thank you for the video. I hold mine in the knife hold. I have nerve damage and carpal tunnel in my right hand. The pencil hold kills my hand.

Hei, Only tried “clover amour/amure” & “tulip etimo” other than the unbranded with or without handles, both are very good quality but I prefer the clovers because its more comfortable for my hands and fingers more than the tulips.

I’m definitely more comfortable (and faster) with pencil hold. But knife is certainly helpful when I need to dig deep into my stitches. But knife is slow for me.
