CRTs are the best way to play retro games hands down, perfect blacks and no input lag and just the right amount of softness to where the image even on component video doesn't look overly sharp. However there are some shaders on retroarch that when combined with an oled comes really close to mimicking the look. CRT Royale comes to mind as that doesn't mimic a PVM but a real honest to god consumer grade trinitron TV with scanlines and low count TV lines also which are the vertical lines that makes each "pixel" look separated from the next one over if you get up close to the screen. Heck it even mimics the glow effect of CRTs though, on an oled that's slightly redundant since oleds have that same exact glow effect also over bright sprites also. I'm not going to be throwing out my CRT anytime soon but its good to see the look preserved.

@@charvelgtrs To me lag is not the issue, what is the issue and I've seen it even on gaming monitors is blurring when things are moving fast, also black levels are something LCDs can never, ever get exactly like CRTs or oleds. Even FAL screens still have light bleed plus costs 3k to get something you can somewhat compare to an oled. On the flip side LCDs don't have to worry about burn-in which honestly is a legitimate trade-off between the 3 display types so there are real reasons to still use an LCD.

@@charvelgtrs I've seen motion blur on my oled when playing sonic 2 or sonic CD and going at top speeds through an act so I'm pretty sure it still very much exists however, I am also running on a late 2015 model OLED so that might explain it. Also its barely noticeable and you really do have to go looking for it while on LCDs it's hard not to see the motion blur, especially in 2d games. Lastly yeah with burn-in I don't really think about it, most people I've seen complaining about burn-in either had a faulty screen from the factory or had news and/or sports running on their screen almost all day long. You really have to work hard and/or be really stupid to ruin an oled.

if you are really into CRTs keep an eye out for a nice old PC crt. can still find them. I recommend anything with a 110khz or higher horizontal scan rate. Some people complain about Samsungs but I had one that looked ok. You will also need a graphics card with analogue out(newest cards with this are 900 series), possibly a dvi analogue to vga converter (small piece that makes it so you can use a vga cable instead of dvi cable), and possibly a VGA gender changer(if the pc crt has a cord on hard wired). You can have a lot of fun getting high refresh rates out of them + all the positive crt traits you listed in the video. I know you mainly want to game on that 36 inches though lmao.

High-end CRT PC monitors are becoming pretty hard to find. I had to have one shipped from Florida to Canada - the casing got damaged in shipping, but it still worked. However, due to misuse (rapidly switching resolutions in a vain attempt to get it to work with an overly modern video card), the flyback eventually started arcing (and high-end flybacks are virtually impossible to find). I had to get another monitor shipped from ENGLAND, but this time it didn't survive shipping - the mainboard was weak from years of heat exposure (CRTs can legit warm a room) and cracked. My last hope is to swap the flyback from the latter into the former. Note that this is only possible because both tubes (and hence the flybacks) are EXACTLY the same model. This isn't for the faint of heart, because CRTs store dangerous levels of voltage. I sent away for specially rated gloves to handle the innards and discharge the voltage.

Best way to get a PC to display on a CRT is using a Geforce 9800GTX+ with either the 9-pin DIN "Compupack" connector or S-Video and then super-sampling.

Ever heard of Bang & Olufsen's high quality MX line of CRT tv's, like the MX 4000, 6000, 7000 and 8000, with the 8000 being the best and last one. Because the 8k had the active soundsystem and screensize of the 7k but its own updated CRT and electronics, giving it a even better picture.

I mean, if the demand is there, I am absolutely sure that it is possible to recreate the CRT-look on a 8K OLED panels, because the pixel density is so high that it is possible to mimic the building blocks of CRT outputs. with HDR and CRT-filters I think it is possible to make something very close to the real deal with intense blacks, amazing brightnes. Regarding latency, with 120Hz we will be able to shave off most of the input latency of the frame buffer, and then we can have pixel perfect 18x 240p output, or 9x 480p output. With a 9x9 or even 18x18 pixels for each Standard Definition Pixel, it's definitely possible to create beautiful RGB patterns, scanlines etc. With proper upscaling, it is possible to smooth out each pixel in a CRT-like manner. If I had the resources I would start a company striving for creating the ultimate retro monitor for computers and consoles, incorperating a top of the line retro upscaler, similar to the OSSC but with higher output resolution.
@papparaba55045 жыл бұрын
It's not that easy… - light emitted by CCFL/LED/OLED is very different from phosphors light (CRT/Plasma tvs), it provides a different naturalness, vividness, "vibrancy" to the colors. - CRTs can reproduce a virtually unlimited amount of color shades. It allow to very precise color reproduction without any kind of dithering (afaik best consumer digital TVs are usually up to 5/6 actual bit per compound, the rest is dithering) - CRT could really be input-lagless. i.e. if you feed a traditional CRT with a direct RGB signal (like RGB SCART here in Europe), the signal will directly drive the 3 electric guns (indeed you can't even adjust the saturation command in this case). It feels like your inputs are executed a little before you perform them... - most important thing: the motion resolution. On CRT you can follow every micro-detail of a fast moving picture (perceived resolution doesn't vary either if the picture is still or moving). You can find something similar only on 30000$ Sony professional OLEDs: they have an option for enabling per lines driving (even in interlaced mode) imitating the CRT functioning, but even so the resolution drops to 700 lines on the resolution test (they are 4096x2160 panels). CRTs don't drop a single pixel. That said, your idea of correctly multiply the pixels is really good. Sure it's better to sacrifice a little of the screen size if needed, always keeping a perfect pixel multiplication.
@DennisRamberg5 жыл бұрын
@@papparaba5504 yeah, I mean CRT technology is of course very different, and the zero input latency is near impossible to compete with, and the virtually endless colors. However the upscaler can fill the frame buffer on a per-scanline basis similar to the OSSC. while applying a pixel-perfect mask during the line rendering while converting and imposing color/brightness spectrum according to the HDR10 standard (but yes. the image will only update once every frame has been drawn) What I am thinking is that the TV will run 60Hz content on the panels 120Hz refresh mode reducing the overall frame latency to 8ms (which is, to most people, extremely negligible). I'm not saying it will be EXACTLY like CRT or actually win the battle. :) But it would create a perceptual lag free experience to most people, with smooth pixel characteristics that we miss so dearly from CRTs. Example of a pretty good superimposed CRT filter is "CRT Royale Kurozumi" kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqPTnmulZpyWfqc (watch in 4K on a 4K- or 1080p screen). I just wish this to be expanded upon and integrated directly into a 4:3 8K OLED. xD "the perfect modern retro monitor". I would of course also love to have different CRT-filters configurable in the TVs native settings for SD content. I guess it's a niche but what modern TVs do to SD content is crazy, smudging and blurring everything to an unrecognizable mess. Treat every pixel with love, now when we have the resolution for it. :) tiny black borders are okay in my opinion, in order to get a pixel perfect image. (however, some inputs need to be streched horizontally, like the SNES 256px wide content), but with a 8K canvas you have pixels enough to upscale it nicely without perceived banding issues)
@papparaba55045 жыл бұрын
@@DennisRamberg To be honest I don't like scanlines. It seems that some people consider them like a distinctive trait of CRTs lol. Obviously it is a problem related to old videogames-HW's limitations. I really like my 2001 28" Mivar CRT (at the moment I have Ps1, og Xbox and Ps3 connected to it) 'cause it attenuates the scanlines on 240p games (I think is either for a little accentuated bloom and a poor mask which when heated by the rays becomes finer), so the picture is quite compact. About the 120hz thing I think it's not a possible thing to realize. I mean it is possible with frame-rate free PC game but old console games will still internally run at 60hz (you'd still have a input window and an actual game's screen refresh, once every 16ms). This would be useless for the motion resolution too for the same reason. A 120hz BFI could make some improvement. For the rest I agree with you. Just making the emulation pixel perfect on screen would really make a huge difference (perfect sharpness and colors), like playing on emulators (with up-scaling enabled). Little black borders are ok for sure. After all you're forced to have 2 big vertical BB when playing 4:3 games (it's not possible to patch it on 2d games). I think that many people would be interested in a monitor/tv with such up-scaling function.

I got a 32" Philco 16:9 CRT recently, the picture quality is so phenomenal that it looked like a OLED tv or something, minus the HD resolution. When you sit 10ft from the screen or more, you can't tell the difference in resolution anymore, all you see is that AMAZING contrast and INCREDIBLE colors. Being widescreen, modern content looked perfect on it, such as movies. I bought an HDMI to Component converter, with the ability to downscale FullHD content to 480i, so now I can hook my PS4, PC, etc to my CRT. lol For retro games that were originally in 4:3 format, it supports that too. The screen is big enough that a 4:3 image in it is as big as a 29" TV screen. Since then I've ditched my LED TV, the image quality is SO BIG, that I'll hapily trade the high resolution of the LED for it. They say the last plasma TVs from Panasonic and OLED TV can rival the picture quality of these CRTs, but I can't easily get my hands on one right now, so I'll keep using the hell out of my CRT for now. lol

The thing that's special about the FV310 is the high voltage regulator. These are the only 2 consumer sets that I know of that got that deluxe treatment.

@@herpyderpyderp Bloom control. For example, if you have a large bright object in the picture on a standard CRT set, you can see everything around that bright object gets pushed away or expands slightly around that bright object. This effect is exaggerated if you turn the contrast up high. Though it depends on the quality of the flyback transformer and tube health. The best way to test it is with a flashing test image or by connecting the CRT TV to a computer and turning the contrast up high and dragging a bright object around on the screen.

You have to enable HDPT in the service menu, and also the JUMP setting to get 4:3 without pillarboxing. I currently have a MiSTer running custom resolution of 720x540p because it can't output 1080i. However the TV can convert 540p to 1080i without adding lag. Zero lag has been confirmed with time sleuth, and duck hunt, lol.
