Another great video! We had to postpone our Exumas cruise due to family, but will be there in spring. We catch a lot of fish trolling with our catamaran. Here are some tips, Nick: (1) you have to troll 4 lines simultaneously to create a spread and enough commotion for fish to notice you. 1 or 2 lines only is like shooting in the dark. Easy to troll 4 lines off catamaran, taken beam. (2) the two outer lines should be about 50 to 75 yard behind the boat, the two inner lines should skip in clear water just behind the last wake (about 25 to 40 yard behind boat) (3) best is to troll rigged dead ballyhoo with a skirt. If you don’t have ballyhoo, just troll little plugs and feathers. Don’t go too big, nr 1 mistake, people tend to troll lures that are waaaaay too big. Best colors for Florida and Bahamas: blue/white and green/yellow. Occasional pink/white. (4) when you hook up, since you’re moving and not stopping the boat, there is no need to jerk and set the hook extra. Just keep the boat moving. (5) don’t set the drag too tight. You will lose too many fish because drag is too tight (6) don’t reel when the fish is taking line. Let him run, do nothing. In the video, it looks like you’re reeling when fish is running. (7) your reeling technique on the video is a problem that makes you lose fish. You’re jerking the rod up and down while reeling. You’re in essence loosening the hook. Instead your reeling should be controlled and let the rod do the work. Lift the rod up without reeling to put pressure on the fish. That’s called pumping. Then bring the rod down and reel so there’s no slack in the line. Then pump again (lift rod up without reeling). And so forth. It’s all controlled without jerking or frantic movements (8) when the fish jumps, point the rod to the fish and reel faster, to avoid slack and to avoid line wraps around fish. (9) when a really big fish is by the boat, don’t lift head out of the water, or don’t try to boat the fish when the fish is still too lively. Tire it out. Most fish are lost by the boat. (10). No 10, but can’t have a good list without a 10.

I caught a Wahoo on a fishing charter off Nassau. We finally got it after the captain pulled the lines closer to the boat and added these water clappers ..but then hold on and earn that fish!
@phillyell28362 жыл бұрын
The tips given you, are all true, especially trying to set the hook after the fish is on, try to be smooth in your approach and take as long as you need to land your fish. A gaff, with a really long handle is best for larger fish, smaller fish can be be netted, tire the fish out before doing either. Patience makes your dinner easier to eat.
@mikec71792 жыл бұрын
That is awesome advice. I hadn't noticed the technique that closely, bit everything you said reminded me of all the fish that my parents and I caught down in Florida back in the 80s. Everything you said made me relive our own wahoo, king mackerel, sail fish, and more. I'm used to fishing from a power boat, so I was glad you mentioned that sailors shouldn't stop sailing, tho I wonder, should headway be reduced? And my last thought for this, and mind you, these are very old memories, but clear as yesterday. We boarded TWO sailfish on our boat without hooking either one, NO WORD OF A LIE. The first one, my father somehow spotted floundering half dead on the surface, it looked like it fought it's guts out (literally) getting away from someone else's hook, only to meet my father's gaff. Then a couple years later, I get a backlash while reeling in at the end of the day. Hey, I was 9 years old and tired. Anyway, dad get grumpy and takes the pole to clean up my mess. As soon as he clicks the reel to pull in, BAM, fish on. And it's a big one. He fought it for over 45 minutes, jumping out the water and everything. Finally the exhausted fish is along side the boat. Dad starts lifting it with the gaff and the hook just slides right off the bill, BEFORE it's in the boat. Well I never seen him move so fast. Needless to say, we ate that 7 foot fish for weeks
@jlb90742 жыл бұрын
These are great tips to follow. I might suggest having a gaff on board for number 10. I use mine for more than just getting the fish into the boat, so they’re handy to have around. I fish mostly south Florida and these are all the things you need to do to fill up the fish box.

Your eagle ray experience very much reminded me of my best dolphin encounter I experienced in Desolation Sound (east of Vancouver Island near N 50.1 W 124.8). It was a multi-day scuba expedition in the early 1990s I think. We attracted a pod of 25-30 Pacific White-sided dolphins one day. Since the _Marine_ _Mammal_ _Protection_ _Act_ is not a restriction in Canadian waters, a bunch of us suited up for snorkeling and jumped in. We soon divided naturally into small groups of two or three swimmers with about the same number of dolphins. I had the distinct impression that the two dolphins with me were _trying_ to teach me how to snorkel! They came close, waited until I watched them, and then swam at moderate speed beside me for 10 or 15 seconds. Then they would stop and watch me continue. After each "lesson" they did some large body language maneuvers which seemed to have meant "good" or "try this instead". They were extremely patient. We did that again and again for maybe 25 or 30 minutes! Other snorkelers reported all kinds of uncommon encounters as well, but most people just swam with them and enjoyed their company.

@@TheOKellys One of the benefits of being a PNW diver is that the water temperature is pretty consistent from SW Alaska to the Southern Oregon Coast. Mostly about 50 °F (10 °C) but occasionally certain areas (the Washington San Juans in particular) it can drop to 45 °F or slightly lower for a few weeks. It does not seem all that cold! In my open water certification dive it seemed *really* cold, but after learning a few adjustments I was good to go. Once diving the Channel Islands (near Santa Barbara) I felt *really* warm!

Eleuthera is a beautiful, friendly island that you barely mentioned. It is rich in history and worth a closer look. The unmatched pink beaches are one of a kind. Living in SW Florida and sailing in the Keys and The Bahamas from 1971 til 2006 we realized it was the best tropical cruising to be found when sailing around the world with 10% of the effort. @@TheOKellys Many circumnavigations that started on the US east coast end in George Town. A difficult Gulf Stream crossing that stirred up fuel tank algae, broke stuff and scared partners cause many to have second thoughts. Arriving in George Town where there is a huge winter cruising fraternity makes leaving south hard. It's a big adult day care center. Not to be abashed if you don't go on because you've found the best in the world. And you're a few hours from Miami's Jackson Hospital. Go to Tahiti at 570 kts. and charter. We did in1984. Go to NZ's Bay of islands the same way. Once you leave Panama it's tough to get anything fixed and the modern catamaran condominiums have a lot of stuff to break that drastically lower your standard of living. The only downside of staying in the Bahamas is hurricanes and insurance. Rick Moore on Sophisticated Lady may have found the perfect spot in San Andres.

Hi, I have a technical question - sort of. How often do you empty your blackwater tank and where? Say, for example, you are in a shallow, perfect anchorage like Pipe Creek. If your tank is full, do you sail out to deep water, empty and come back? Or do you time it so that it is almost full by the time you want to leave, and empty on the deep water leg to your next anchorage?

Great video. Looks like the only way you can visit a lot of these places is with a shallow draft boat like a cat.. : ) I've sailed the coast of Alaska for over 25 years and always wanted to sail the Caribbean but I'm not sure how well I would handle the heat. I struggle when it gets north of 90 degrees F especially with high humidity. Thanks for the video. Sail on! : )

Bahamas really a different climate than Carib in winter. Humidity goes high sometimes, but it is mostly vey comfortable in the the 80s. By late spring it does get a lot warmer, but not much over 90. We worked Prince William Sound one summer back in college….at first the mosquitos seem intolerable….then by week three you know to cover up and spray and it’s not an issue really. Seems us humans are pretty adaptable.

I know I’ve never posted how much I love you guys . But when you mention not going too hard in paradise, ‘cause you didn’t want the boat to get “salty” , it did sound a bit overly spoiled. …no matter, I’m still an envious follower. Happy new year kids. :)

Lol. Yeh not very salty to worry about saltiness. I should also have mentioned there was no need to push the speed as we had to wait for the flood tide through the cut anyway. Lol. Thanks for the note
