I love hunting from the ground on public land. You can be mobile and get setup very quickly. It's also the lightest way to hunt. I do have hang on stands and ladder stands for private property. Also, I use a saddle when needed.

Are you talking about out of a blind, taking up a prone position, or sitting yourself in concealment?
@joesnausageface84144 ай бұрын
@@danorris5235when I ground hunt I use a folding stool chair I got in the Army 20 years ago, no blind. I set it on the backside of the tree hiding from line of movement and just wait. It’s a lot of fun. Sent a sabot 100 yards to get a mature buck last year from behind an old red oak tree as he was strutting across one of my soy bean fields. I use a primos trigger stick and the side of the tree in a standing position. Works great! I did however put a ladder on that specific tree this off season.
@danorris52354 ай бұрын
@@joesnausageface8414 Gotcha. Since you have military experience too I don't think there's any real pointers I can give that you don't already know. All the advice I'd be able to offer is proper setup for an ambush and the discipline involved in maintaining the illusion that you're not actually there. Which, it sounds like you're already doing leading to success. Keep it up!

I switched to saddle hunting for bow season since all I hunt is public land and it is completely impractical to try and hunt the same spot more than once in a season. I used to use a climber but it's too risky for compound bow hunting, you have to stand up to draw, risk of clanging the bow or the foot platform squeaking is high, lots of movement too. I use the climber for gun season only now.

I use saddles to try new areas and will add a stand if it's a productive spot... i offen buy sets of stix to preset during the season so I don't have to carry stix in (I'm 72 years old) and slide quickly and quietly with a saddle...I like being on the back side of the tree.

I enjoy saddle hunting only bc it allows me to hit multiple places on my private land based on wind and weather. Every time a have a staged ladder stand it never works out, either but setting or saddle works good here in the Ozarks.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97514 ай бұрын
We couldn't use them on private land...just too serious of a hunt and too much at stake to potentially spook deer. Now if I was skipping around to multiple parcels and had a few dozen setups...I would have pre hung steps and platforms and that would work OK. But on intensely managed private land where 1 mistake can cost an entire season that wouldn't be an option.

Yep I created bad luck for myself already this year with a hang n hunt set up, mainly my fault, I didn’t practice with it enough during the off season, and all I really needed was 2 sticks, I was loud putting up my 3 stick and ended up hanging out with raccoons that night instead of deer. I mainly hunt public so I’m pretty determined to dial in my system and get this hang n hunt to work safely and effectively.

the quietest stand is the best stand to use. after years of buying the most comfortable cheapest stands, just to have them make a huge racket in cold weather. Id love to use family traditions stands if they were near by. I found a local guy who makes all welded ladder stands. they are SILENT. they will last many many years. Also Millennium bowlite stands are very nice and under $200. very quiet and light and easy to put up

I hunt a ton of public land and private land all in PA. I don't like leaving stands anywhere on public, so I use my saddle 100% of the time. On private, I'll use preset hang ons, so I'm not messing up my hunts before they start. I don't like ladder stands at all, I hate trying to move and set them up, but I haven't touched one in about 10 years. I'm sure some of my private land spots, the ladder stands, might be a better option for the pre sets, I just don't like them.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions97514 ай бұрын
One thing to consider is that those quality ladder stands are FAR easier to set up and move, than hang ons. One of the reasons I am migrating to more of them. Very quick and easy... I'm like you tho...don't want to mess up my hunts on private land before they begin!
@joevandivner97044 ай бұрын
Same way. I hunt PA public and I sure as hell won’t leave any equipment on public. Last time I did I left my climber on the base of the tree left probably 30min after dark and was back in the next morning before daylight and my climber was gone. People are just terrible and untrustworthy. Saddle all the way! Good luck this fall!

I have a healthy, realistic, evolutionary, rational, and pragmatic view of impacting the ground with great force. I'm entirely unafraid of unstable platforms, elevated positions, and being blown around in the wind. I only avoid these things because they often lead to ground impacts. Ladder stand in heavy cover attached to a exceptionally healthy tree at a maximum of 12ft off the ground is my brave and courageous solution. I try to avoid ground blinds in the fall because the forest spiders where I'm at are the size of cats and hunt rabbits. 😂
