A friend of mine once told me she interprets the storyline of returning the heart to Te Fiti as a metaphor for healing from abuse. Te Fiti was violated at her very core, and as a result, became something monstrous and destructive. It was only by returning her heart to her that she is able to heal: "I have crossed the horizon to find you I know your name They have stolen the heart from inside you But this does not define you This is not who you are You know who you are ...who you truly are." There are, of course, a whole host of ways you can interpret it, but I can't watch the end of the movie without seeing that. I cry every single time.

Fun fact: Tamatoa is still visibly missing a leg from his last fight with Maui. Centuries later. Crabs can regenerate lost limbs. They do so by molting their shell. Tamatoa is so freakin' vain he would rather simply put up with a FREAKING MISSING LIMB FOR CENTURIES than molt his beautiful shiny shell off, get his leg back, and have to start on over as a drab crab at being beautiful. Also, the Kakamora, the coconut things, are actually WEARING coconut shells as armor. It's practical, fairly durable, functional, and most importantly... coconuts FLOAT. So it's one part armor, one part life vest if they fall overboard. A great idea for a race of critters that make their living through oceanic piracy. Fall overboard? Just float there in your coconut armor until the tribe swings around to get you! Plus, Maui's tatau of Moana appeared right next to Mini-Maui, who is placed right over his heart.. That is... Moana will always be close to his heart, and close to him. And moreover... it's the one tatau that doesn't have his hook in it. As a reminder that the hook doesn't make him Maui. He taught Moana without it, by being himself, and in so doing achieved one of the greatest feats he ever achieved.

We fell in love with it, and had to buy it as soon as it was available. I've watched it dozens of times, but every time I still get goosebumps. Also the song "Who you are" it... Kills me. The notion that when you've had "your heart taken away from you" in my mind by abuse or depression or any type of mental illness, you are "not who you are." That your actions as a "lava monster" don't define you. And you can always find your heart again, and bloom into new life, if you trust who you really are deep inside, and that there is always goodness in you, no matter what is done *To* you. You are not damaged because you took on a hard form to defend yourself. And you don't have to live that way forever, after it's done its job.

13:52 - The thing with calling it a “princess” movie is that the concept of calling someone a “princess” is not something every culture does. It’s mainly rooted in the European fairytales that Disney made its name with in the last 90 years, which they have been trying very hard to expand past lately. But because they’re trying to combine diversity and the “princess” term for the Princess franchise, basically all you have to be is the daughter of someone in charge or just somewhat related to someone in a position of power. Moana is the daughter of the chief and Mulan married a high-ranking military man (and hugged royalty lol.) They both qualify enough to show up on the Disney Princess merch. 👍🏻

I absolutely adore this movie! I live in the Pacific (Aotearoa New Zealand) and it was so amazing to see a Disney movie honour local customs and languages and values. One thing you mentioned early on was that the ocean was trying to kill her, my interpretation of that is that in Māori legend (which this is partially based on) there are separate gods for the ocean (Tangaroa) and wind and storms (Tāwhirimātea). Tāwhirimātea doesn't get along well with the other gods and often causes destruction when angered. So Tangaroa is the one protecting Moana through most of the film, but when the storm hits, that's Tāwhirimātea. That's my interpretation anyway. Her name Moana means 'ocean' in te reo Māori. The chicken's name Heihei means chicken. Maui is a demigod who appears in mythology throughout the Pacific, when he mentions "the islands I pulled from the sea" that refers at least in part to the myth of how Aotearoa New Zealand came to be, Maui fished it up with his hook (made from his grandmother's jawbone). He also mentions lassoing the sun, another popular myth that the sun was crossing the sky too quickly and making the days too short, so Maui caught the sun and slowed its passage down to make the days longer. What else... Taika Waititi wrote a version of the script for this movie, I believe it was shopped around a lot and a lot of people worked on it, so who knows which parts were his. The crab that sings 'Shiny' was voiced by Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords) and that song was a David Bowie tribute (similar to a song he sang on FotC). A lot of the music is performed in Samoan and Tuvaluan as well as English (obviously). Some more information on that here: thespinoff.co.nz/music/15-02-2017/this-is-our-movie-opetaia-foai-on-keeping-moana-authentic-through-music/

Since you liked the soundtrack so much, the 3 composers here are Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina und Lin-Manuel Miranda! And in case you don't know, Lin-Manuel Miranda is the guys who also created the Hamilton musical, Mark Mancina also worked on the Tarzan soundtrack and Opetaia Foa'i is a Polynesian singer and songwriter and founder of the band Te Vaka! ^^ OH AND I JUST HAD THE BEST IDEA!! You definitely NEED to watch Brother Bear! It's one of my favourite movies and I think you'll like it!

I’m the crybaby of my friend group (we’re all in our 20s), so every time we watch Moana they look at me when she goes “I am Moana!” because they know I’ll cry no matter what. I’m a sucker for when people/characters find themselves. Similar reaction to frozen 2, which I think you would love if you haven’t reacted to it already

I LOVE Moana. One of my favourite movies ever. The story, the animation, the songs, the design. I cry every time Moana realises Te Kā is Te Fiti and restores the Heart to her. The music is so heart wrenching in that moment.

Please watch The Princess and the Frog next. I love your reactions and I honestly have never laughed so hard. Your reactions are really wonderful to watch and I just know you're going to love The Princess and the Frog. There's this one song that I cannot stop singing every time it pops up on my playlist...the graphics and the animation are just amazing.

Something I always thought was really funny is when HeiHei, the chicken, goes into the water, his feet go straight up and he floats. It’s an old sailor’s tale that chicken feet float, and people who sail will still tattoo their feet so in case they go overboard they’ll float instead of sinking to the bottom.

You know, you're channel is probably one of my favorite reaction channels. Just the right reactions to every movie and I like that you're really enjoying every single one of them. I've got a theory about this movie though that I had only thought of now. Maybe Te fiti drains the life island after island is because she needed the life back and the only thing that's left of her power was from the islands she'd made. It's probably how she survived for a thousand years, and she's probably going to do it again and again until she finds her heart, even when it leads to destruction. Thanks to Moana, that does not have to happen anymore.

he just copied old Disney songs for this movie, where is the cultural music? He is Puerto Rican, they should have hired a Polynesian. One minority doesn't fit all.
@meggsy823 жыл бұрын
@@sbasi2739 Lin is just one of the song writers. One of the other writers, Opetaia Foa'i, is from New Zealand. The directors went on research trips to Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti to meet the people of the South Pacific Ocean and learn about their culture. They recruited experts from across the South Pacific who consulted on the film's cultural accuracy and sensitivity as the story evolved through nine versions. The majority of the cast are of Polynesian descent. You're right, one minority doesn't fit all. Which is why a movie about Polynesian culture involved mostly Polynesian people and just happened to throw in one multi-award winning Puerto Rican.

Yes Welchy, It is a disney princess movie. From Mulan, who broke the tradition that a character was considered a princess because she was royalty, the title of Disney Princess can be achieved by the concept of "heroic act". So, when you see a disney movie, it's easy to know what kind of movie is.
