Johnny Ringo was afraid of Doc from the night they met at the Oriental. Everybody at the bar laughed and thought that Doc was just making fun of Ringo when he imitated his gun twirling parlor trick. If you watch Johnny and Curly Bill though, they see something different. They see a thoroughly intoxicated, ill man calmly watch Ringo's every move only to repeat it back to him spinning his drink cup instead of a pistol. That's why Curly Bill and the others grabbed Johnny so quickly when Doc challenged him in the street. They knew that would have NEVER ended well for any of them. And while I have your ear, I'd also like to nominate Doc's reply to Johnny Ringo's explanation of "Oh I was just funnin' about" as the coldest two words ever spoken on screen. That slight pause and smile along with "I wasn't" drops the temperature about 50 degrees.

You're forgetting Doc IS A DOCTOR. He knows anatomy. He paralyzed Ringo by shooting his left hemisphere of the brain which is why he couldn't shoot his gun or raise his right hand (ringo is a right handed shooter only while doc is ambidextrous shooter) He taunted him wanting him to recognize he had lost motor skill and was dying slowly had he lived he would have to re learn how to shoot with his other hand which wasn't as fast. Basically He toyed with him and wanted to talk smack the entire time and ruined his shooting career had he survived.
