What everyone doesn't notice... he's not mocking him entirely. He's repeating the steps that Ringo did. And the reason Ringo is stunned unlike Wild Bill who looks more annoyed at first... Ringo realizes Doc is drunk off his ass, clearly in bad health... but can repeat the move set that Ringo did with no struggle. Not to mention, it also revealed Ringo's draw speed. Doc watches, he doesn't appear offended or intimidated while Ringo does his thing: he watches. He realizes he can handle his speed which is why later, Doc knows Wyatt can't beat him but he can, even in his bad health. It's why when Ringo walks away, he offers a hint of a smirk. It wasn't "ha ha smart ass" it was more realizing he got outplayed. He was showing off because he figured the lunger was easy prey. Hence why later when Doc shows up for the duel... he's scared because he knows Doc is still that DOC.

Just when I don't think you can top yourself, you top yourself. EXCELLENT one, sir.
@LuxDragon2 ай бұрын
This scene is beautiful for two reasons. You put up the literal translation, which is fine, of course, but the contemporary translation gives it sense. "In wine, there is truth" = "I'm honest when I'm drunk." "Do well, whatever you do" = "That's all you're good for." "Tell it to someone else, not I" = "Talk to someone who cares." "Youth is the teacher of fools" = "I can teach you a lesson." "Rest in peace" = "It's your funeral." The second is the gunmanship. Kudos to the director for his "show, don't tell" behind the story here. The reason why Ringo isn't laughing isn't because he's being mocked. If you look closely, despite being completely plastered and sick (and therefore 'should' have no coordination), Doc does NOT drop the cup, and more importantly, he matched Ringo move-for-move. Ringo knew this and just personally verified that Doc was someone to watch out for.

Ringo also gave away how fast he can pull a pistol so in their show down later in the movie Doc had the advantage.

Also Ringo uses his own gun which he is undoubtedly very familiar with and has practiced with often. Doc just uses a random cup he has never seen before.
@LuxDragon2 ай бұрын
@@88wildcat Doc was wearing his pistols, as he always done. Ringo would have identified them long before. Nah, the cup was interesting because it doesn't matter what was in his hand or what state he was in: The man had skill bordering on magic.
@88wildcat2 ай бұрын
@@LuxDragon What I am saying is that Ringo was using an object he was very famiiiar with in terms of weight, feel, and balance to demonstrate his hand-eye coordination skills. Doc wasn't and his skills were still a level above Ringo. I don't think Ringo was unaware of that little detail and it gave him another thing to figure into the equation. If Doc is that good with objects he just happens to pick up, then how good is he with his own guns?

I have the idea that it was more like a gang/turf war that happened in Tombstone, it's just that the Earps had the law on their side. In this scene while everyone is laughing at Doc's display with the cup, Ringo is watching Doc mimic his every move, as in he just watched Ringo perform with his pistol and Doc didn't miss a single motion, but copied it down, and repeated everything. It's why Ringo isn't laughing.

Yeah ok, but he's still mocking him. He's showing that he's not afraid of Ringo's fancy moves because he knows that he's faster than him. When they finally have their little showdown Holiday is the faster draw and when he kills Ringo he says to him "you're no daisy".

How Val Kilmer wasn’t even nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Doc Holliday that year I’ll never understand. He gave what is, in my opinion, one of the most memorable performances in film history as Doc. He had so many iconic and quotable lines. There’s not many characters in film where almost all of their lines throughout the film are instantly recognizable by nearly everyone that hears it.
@jp381318 күн бұрын
The nominees for Best Supporting Actor in the 66th Academy Awards were: Tommy Lee Jones as Samuel Gerard in "The Fugitive" Ralph Fiennes as Amon Göth in "Schindler's List" John Malkovich as Mitch Leary in "In the Line of Fire" Leonardo DiCaprio as Arnie Grape in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" Pete Postlethwaite as Giuseppe Conlon in "In the Name of the Father" Other snubs include Ben Kingsley as Itzhak Stern in "Schindler's List"; Sean Penn as David Kleinfeld in "Carlito's Way"; Gary Oldman as Drexl Spivey, Christopher Walken as Vincenzo Coccotti, & Dennis Hopper as Clifford Worley in "True Romance"; etc... Common criticisms: Jones - "He was just playing himself." Back in the early 90s, that style of acting wasn't typical of him yet. Fiennes - "Too one-dimensional." Those people exist in real life. Malkovich - "Plenty of more iconic villain performances in that decade." He wasn't competing w/ most of them. DiCaprio - "Playing disabled characters is typical Oscar bait." Some attendees were apparently surprised that he wasn't actually disabled. Postlethwaite - "Very few people even recall his performance." Likely due to the film being less popular. Kilmer - "He was just in his own world while the rest of the cast were actually on the same page." Would the movie be better w/o him? Kingsley - "Not as inventive or risky as most of the other choices." Subtlety is an art form. Penn - "Changing his appearance makes it seem like his acting is more chameleonic than it is." All actors utilize what's given to them. Oldman - "Merely chewed the scenery." This role is often compared to Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, which got a nomination. Walken - "Only in one scene." Still more screen time than Beatrice Straight's win for Network. Hopper - "Remembered due to the great dialogue." Imagine Tommy Wiseau delivering the same lines.

Ringo called Doc out by showing him up (not just showing off) and if Doc had pulled his pistol to just mimic Ringo, there would have been a shootout as soon as he touched his gun. But if he didn’t respond he would have showed to be a coward and backing down. That’s why spinning the cup was so clever
