I know that this comment is slightly off topic, and you're putting out great information for people wanting to learn, so for that you have my thanks. With that said, I've had several calls this month alone from people looking to rehome pets. I don't know if you have a video touching on this, but I feel that some people don't comprehend the commitment, and unless that parent has the time, patience, resources, and plan on that animal being 100% theirs, they shouldn't get one. I see too many families giving up their pet's, because they can't put in the effort. It's selfish and is the worst life lesson that a parent could teach their children. Essentially they keep the pet economy going, but it's not fair to the animal.

Just became the proud mom of a 3month old standard poodle. She’s amazing. So smart, so easy to train. Loves everyone. I couldn’t be happier. Best retriever pup I’ve had in years. But those puppy teeth 🦷! I call her Bella-cuda

We had our chocolate lab. She was a hippie trapped in a dog's body. Lost her to cancer at 14 last October. We also had our Doberman. I had 100s of hours in training, that people thought she was a working dog.... in part to your channel and my grandfather's teachings (military canine trainer). Unfortunately we lost her to DCM a month before our Lab at 2 years old. I'll be starting from scratch again in the fall with another Doberman. Forgot to add. The Lab loved everything with a heartbeat and our Dobbie loved kids. Cheers

I had Dobermans for years but switched to greyhounds when life got too busy. They are super sweet and calm. I would highly recommend them for a busy family with older kids. I wanted to get back into agility training and the greyhounds are way too lazy. Still wanted to do rescue and get a higher energy dog. A female dobe came into rescue - very pregnant. She had 6 puppies. They did DNA testing. Came back 50/50 Doberman and Great Pyrenees. The puppy I adopted, is super smart, not as naughty as Doberman puppies but already at 5 months is showing her guardian breed side. Wish me luck 😁

People should be aware that shelters often mislabel pit bulls as lab-mixes. It's an extremely common practice to mislabel that breed, especially with puppies. That's how my aunt ended up with way too much dog. I'd get a purebred, family friendly dog to be on the safe side.

Our nextdoor neighbours spent a lot of money on a purebred Golden Retriever puppy for their daughter. Poor pup spends most of her time in her crate, because she won't listen when she's told not to bite or counter surf.
@annabell3385
@annabell3385 Жыл бұрын
@@resticou7042 It's even sadder that it's a conscious decision because they assume the adopter won't return the dog. Oftentimes when someone does they will be publicly shamed in the next write-up for the dog, returned "through no fault of his own" "abandoned" "owner had a baby and heartlessly threw this dog away like trash!" Etc and so on, even though people, like my retired aunt, are often quite clear on what they do not want. My aunt specifically did not want a pit bull and said so, and her dog turned out to be one hundred percent pit, and now she is bound by love and guilt. She will soon be a grandmother. The rescue saw the mother, and they knew they were lying. Shelters used to spay abort but the rescues WANT to stay in business, and puppies bring in customers. There is no real effort to "save them all."

@@parkerbrown-nesbit1747 A purebred maybe isn't exactly what I meant. I like mutts. Lots of them are smarter than the purebreds in my experience, but I would want to know the parents of the dog and what, exactly, I'm getting. I thought, for the average person who knows nothing about dogs, something purebred would be more reliable. Of course, that's not always the case.

@@annabell3385even though there's a breed standard for temperament, dogs have their own personalities (as you probably are well aware of). I think, personally, that she wasn't well-bred. I am owned by a Belgian Malinois who is in a lot of ways, totally unlike any Mal I've heard about. She's calm, she doesn't bark much, and she's the consummate couch potato. I love mutts too -- most of my dogs have been mutts. The smartest dog we had was a Border Collie/English Springer Spaniel/Shetland Sheepdog mix. We had to spell words, because she figured out what they meant (perambulation, for example).

My first dog was a German Shepherd puppy when I was a year and a half old. According to my mum, we were inseparable. My second dog was a Chihuahua/Toy Fox Terrier mix (I was 3) who was 15 minutes old when I got her (mum had 11 puppies and not enough room at the milk bar). Fantastic dog -- never barked unless it was something serious (totally unlike the stereotype of a small dog).

We were a few days from purchasing a newfoundland when a child got bitten less than a foot away from my 5 year old daughter by a newfoundland who was trained and raised in a family with lots of children. That really made us give up on the idea full stop and my daughter is now terrified of any dog in the park when before she was cuddling every dog we would meet. Just restarted the process of considering a family dog for our 4 children but newfoundland will never get back on that list because of such a personal experience.

This is a great topic! I got way more dog than I bargained for! I thought I was getting a medium drive GSD female puppy, but guess what! I got a medium high to high drive, strong, dominant puppy! Wheee! At least she has a great off switch, but she has me on my toes every minute of the day pushing the limits constantly! Hardest GSD to train I've ever had! She's smart and talented but stubborn! I'm disabled, so it's been a real challenge to rise to what she needs and exhausting. God has a funny way of using her to push me to my limits, both good and bad! Thank you Lord for using her to show me my many shortcomings! Talk about humbling! Folks, definitely take Robert's advice! There are some really great dog breeds out there! If you need a protection dog, getting one that is trained by a professional already, would be my recommendation! Love and respect to Robert, A Great Human "Doing" Thank you Robert!

Here’s my two cents, the best and funniest dogs I have are a female Miniature Dachshund and a male Dachshund/lab mix. I would have never thought they were until we were given a pure breed pup (her tail was broke and healed crooked) and the lab/dachshund mix we found injured along the road. I’ve had plenty of other breeds but these two are great and put up great with kids.

Great video! I'm not sure why, but difficult breeds seem to be very popular right now and most people don't have the time or skills to really do right by the dogs. We did a lot of research before we got a dog when my kids were little and ended up going with a collie. I love the herding breeds but this was our first dog and my thinking was if I made mistakes I wasn't going to create a liabilito outy. My first dog, Kipper, was the most wonderful friend and companion to our entire family. He went everywhere with us and was super patient with even toddlers. We had to put him down a few years ago and when we decided to get another dog, I got another collie. Sherlock is a lot higher drive than Kipper (and he was a terror as a puppy - but to be fair, Kipper was like a unicorn puppy he was so easy), but Sherlock is the sweetest dog. He loves everyone and even though my boys are adults now, he is unfailingly kind and patient with small children. Collies can be barky though, especially ones with higher drives, so keep that in mind if you live where you have neighbors nearby. It can be worked with, but you aren't going to cut it out entirely. We will be doing some herding this summer just for fun (He has high instincts for it) and we are also working on nose work because he can sniff out just about anything anywhere. :) Thanks for all your videos. They are so informative!!!

Hello Robert I love what you do and you’ve helped me soo much with my WL Gsd. I love the long podcast with stoops and all others when you dive into genetics and protection training. I was wondering if you considered offering a free trial for your members only chat ? Or maybe a limited version of it and a least expensive price ? Might be a long shot but money is tight and I don’t want to miss out. Thank you Robert . Be safe out there say what’s up to goofy and Maya !

Make sure the lab is an English lab for a more docile temperament. An American lab is a much higher energy, working line dog and requires much more training and activity.

Thanks for your work. I found your channel because, though I am a dog person, I'm getting downright angry about dangerous dogs and my young children. I've gleaned enough information from your videos to be more confident setting boundaries with neighbors, friends and strangers. I'm lucky enough to live in a strict liability state that recognizes the second amendment and we've got got a great Animal Control.

For the reasons you described are the ones we used to pick an English bulldog for our family pet. Our kids take a lot of our time and energy, our EB doesn’t require much exercise so it’s very easy to manage our time. Plus he’s incredibly patient, the kids can do just about anything to him and he just keeps snoring.
@cate796

If you train the kids, there are more options. I foster and have failed on a few small chihuahua mixes which wouldn't usually be recommended for children. My son didn't like getting jumped on by large breed puppies. He learned how to handle and be gentle with them and in turn, the dogs love him back. Kids should be trained regardless of breed. I hate seeing how some parents let their children treat their dogs just because the dog is patient and tolerant.
