Socializing Your DOG is the MOST Important Thing You'll Do for Him

There are so many dogs with bad manners and that is sad to see. These dogs often end up in the shelters and killed. I've seen it too many times. So much of this can be fixed with proper training, which I'll demonstrate in this video. This is the shorter version, if you'd like to see the full version check it out on my website:
robertcabral.com
Dogs that behave badly in public are often dogs that were not socialized as puppies. It can also come from bad experiences, so you want to be careful what you expose your dog to. Other dogs, ignorant people and such can cause a huge problem. The key is to keep it short and to keep it positive. You'll see that in this video with my friend Yossi and his young Malinois puppy Siggy!
We've been raining Siggy for a few months and he's a very good dog. You'll notice that some dogs are genetically a little more nervous than others. In fact with Siggy I told Yossi to unhook the prong collar because that could make it worse for him.
Lots to learn here. Also, if you're interested in learning more about dog training or possibly thinking of becoming a dog trainer, check my online course for dog trainers:

Totally agree on how important socialization is at puppy stage. I have been guilty of neglecting in sending my little mutt to puppy school. I have since published many videos on my channel on the importance of SOCIALIZATION.

Man, this dog is already an angel. Walking nice, looking at the owner, *confident*, doesn't have his nose to the ground. Though he is like my Mal and looks like he wants to make friends with everything on 4 legs.

@@justacitygirl Not all the time, no! But when we're trying to go for a walk walk, or work on something outside, yeah, it can get annoying. Plus I have to watch his mouth really closely, make sure he doesn't try to eat anything, which as someone with ADHD can be a lot.

@@FenrirAldebrand I just let him eat it half the time. I figure he will learn the hard way. I think I have adhd too so it's too much work for me to concentrate on him that much and enjoy my walk. I just go with the flow and allow him to mature on his own with a nudge here and there.

@@justacitygirl Yeah, that would be fine if I lived somewhere else. Our city has a major opiate problem. So much so that I carry the nasal spray version of Narcan/Naloxone on my person for my dog in case he sniffs/eats something bad and ODs. Plus, I so could not afford an emergency vet bill.

It's funny that you made that observation, cuz when I watched the video all I could think of was "Damn.. It's no one's fault, but seriously, there's like no pedestrians in the US... As a European, it looked so surreal/sad..". I think I counted 5 pedestrians in the whole clip.. It would've been hundreds if that was any town/city in Europe :) And tonnes more dogs too of course!... Not always a good thing when you're trying to socialise a dog on Day 1....
@Tahoe10
@Tahoe10 25 күн бұрын
@tektoms probably because in the US we are more spread out. What you see is a downtown shopping area, but most people would have to drive several miles from the suburbs, park and then walk around and do their shopping. Sometimes it will be buster than others, depending on day and time.

I rescued my youngest Mal at 6 mos. He was terrified of everything. Wouldn’t go upstairs and was scared of my older Mal(now they’re BFFS). I’ve socialized him 3-5x week for the last 5 months but he still overreacts to other dogs and absolutely hates going inside strange buildings.

It helped me to define designated areas where the dog is allowed to sniff for a few seconds/minutes. You can even incorporate a command "go sniff", he will get the hang of it pretty quickly because the sniffing is so rewarding. Don't forget to use a command at the end of the sniffing session to get him back to the walk-mode.

How many dog owners have dog-reactive/aggressive canine pets? AFIK there may be *millions of us with a dog that will not be sufficiently socialized . Can every dog be "saved" ... ? Hypothetically I would guess Yes. Practically speaking No. I occasionally shudder to think who would care for my gorgeous 4 yr old, 65lb blue Pit Ellie were I gone. I heard from a good professional GSD/Mal trainer that Pits are "dumb as rocks" I would add stubborn to that. I've done lots of training with her but not enough to curb dog aggression. When you drill down, worst case senarios are not common but will spoil all social walks because you just can't risk it. Lucky for her, Ellie has my heart, home, and resources... I'm retired, have a large fenced yard for our home base... I take her virtually everywhere, but on a short leash.

Watching this video, and I was finding this mal has the same challenges in terms of staying down. This is a seemingly long work in progress. My Mal was 4 when we adopted her, and absolutely terrified of cars (she would cower when one passed us). I would start with having your dog just look at a parked car from a distance (have high value treats or a toy on hand). If there's no reaction, reward (you will probably spend months on just this). After you're successful with this, then you can gradually go closer. It takes time and a lot of patience, but you'll get there!

Socializing a dog doesn’t mean going to dog parks or every single store. Only trained service dogs are allowed in non pet friendly places. Dog parks are going to do way more harm than good.

Some dogs are more interested in dogs than other dogs. And, if you always have let him sniff /socialize with other dogs, the dog will expect contact with the other dogs, and he will pull towards them. If you are interested in teaching the dog walk besides you without pulling towards other dogs I would recommend you to watch Beckman's dog training.
