Not only does drumatom take care of mic bleed, it allowed Glenn to travel back to high school and play guitar for the video. Thanks Accusonus!

i definitely like how it lets the snare hits breathe a little more without the gate cutting it off. Way more natural sound.

I think that the question that still no one has been able to answer or doesn't want to is: If the whole argument of using a real drummer and real drums is to keep the drums sounding natural, then why we overprocess the drums so much to the point where they sound just like sampled drums? Cause pretty much every modern drum VSTi in the market allows you to control bleed like that too.
@austinjamesweimer3388
@austinjamesweimer3388 8 жыл бұрын
I'm with you there. It just seems like so much more trouble than it's worth, and few people will actually be able to tell if it's a real drummer, provided the person programming the hits in knows what they are doing. The same goes for the processing end of stuff since Superior Drummer can attenuate all the bleeds in a given mic just by sliders.
@BoilingJD
@BoilingJD 8 жыл бұрын
There will still be certain random and unique characteristics to the sound. (Like the way drum tone changes depending on velocity). So a well recorded and mixed drum kit will sound better than 100% wet sample replaced drums
@austinjamesweimer3388
@austinjamesweimer3388 8 жыл бұрын
BoilingJD This is definitely true. I guess the whole draw towards programmed stuff is saving time and money as opposed to properly tracking a real kit. SD does a pretty good job at altering the sound for the velocity so it isn't just the same triggered wet sample. It was that and the room mic impulses that sold me on it.
@BoilingJD
@BoilingJD 8 жыл бұрын
It's not the same. Software might try to imitate velocity variation, but you can't make it 'feel', you can't make it understand the song and translate that emotion into a performance.

+BoilingJD I'm for and into recording live drums myself (check out on my channel), but considering metal music is it really so "feelful" when it comes to 180bpm and more and we have to process it anyway to get that tight sound? I guess its a balance and choice between accuracy and "feel": the "more metal" you do, the more process you'll have to imply, the closer you come to that drum rompler sound. Its cool to keep "feel" in heavy metal, but within black/death metal, wouldn't these attempts sound weak in the end?
@Johnnydontdid
@Johnnydontdid 8 жыл бұрын
Whoa. Okay, so at first, the process seemed quite convoluted and I found myself wondering, "Why wouldn't the plug-in just handle all of this processing & stuff automatically?" But then I saw/heard the two separate busses, giving the engineer the ability to control the amount of bleed against the direct mic tracks, and I was immediately sold. Amazing idea. Cool on Sturgis for coming up wif it. So great.

I have got to hand it you and to Drumatom, Glenn. The ol' phase cancellation trick to eliminate bleed out of the individual tracks is a brilliant idea. I think anyone that who listens to this and says it is not impressive or that a sample program could give equal results does not have a very developed ear... This gives you the sanitation and isolation of a sample program with the authenticity of a true recording, because it IS a true recording! Thanks again for the tip... Now, to save up for Drumatom!
@SebBrosig
@SebBrosig 8 жыл бұрын
The trick is neat, you 've got to wonder why they don't add that as a feature inside Drumatom: can't be hard can it? Being able to export "drums minus bleed" as well as "bleed minus drums" would avoid the round-trip in the DAW. But hey, maybe the guys at accusonus watch this video and come round to the idea.

So for the whole first part of this video I was thinking "oh yeah ok he is going to end up with bleed control faders, pretty cool I guess", then then moment of realisation when you said you can EQ the snare without adding a bunch of harsh cymbal bleed...mind exploded.

To everyone complaining that this makes the kit sound like samples... You are missing the point. We hate samples because they take element of human performance out of the drum takes, because they sound boring. Not because they sound too precise. As mixing engineers we strive toward better sound always, this allows us to get closer to a great drum sound while keeping the performance of a live drummer. If you like the sound of recordings you grew up with which had processed mic bleed... Stop recording with the intent to mimic what you're used to and start recording with the intent to capture the best version of the live sound your drummer is producing.

i think this level of processing is really up to personal preference of the engineer if he wants to go that far or not. the Drumatom + bleed mix does sound very polished and seems to be easier to mix. but the gated mix feels fatter and bigger to me. so i don´t think Drumatom makes it objectively "better". but this still looks like a fun trick. i wouldn´t go that route myself but i do appreciate the craftiness ;)

The whole exporting and importing the "bleed only" tracks, seems like something they could add inside the Drumatom itself. doesnt seem like some magic function :D really liked that video. Can you make an update video if they add this function? then I would really think about buying it

If you use REAPER it seems like this would be an easy thing to implement using REAscript. Or actually if you have some convention for filenames I could write an R-script that looks through a directory in which both Drumatom outs and the original track files are stored and produces the "bleed only" tracks. Both options seem like very little work.

The kick is way more powerful in the gated mix, it really pushes the air. The Drumatom mix seems to have stripped something from it that i can't quite put my finger on. Fair enough the mix is clearer by a small margin but i'd definately rather have that slamming kick. Having said that you cannot deny how impressive Drumatom is at what it does. Swings and roundabouts i guess.

I see lots of people saying that they preferred the gated mix, as it sounds more natural. I'm not gonna say I have ears like Glenn or a pro studio, but with my headphones (Shure SRH440s with 840 pads for comfort), but I can't tell that there is THAT much difference between them. I can't really tell that the hi-hat is bleeding into the snare mic, as you claim it does. I do prefer the gated mix myself, as I feel like the drumatom just ever so slightly kills the dynamics, and the kit as a whole sounds little dead. Your drum mixes sound better with every video though Glenn, keep up the good work!

God damnit Glen! You have scared me for life! At the end of the video when you showed us how it sounded in the mix the bass player did a last riff in the end of it. Wow, just fucking wow man, this is GREAT!! I've been using a similar-ish technique by Jordan Valariote that uses copies of the close mic'd tracks. I'm very interested to see which yields better results, especially since I'm already using Drumatom.

I'm not sure why the small details like mic bleed matter? Maybe I'm crazy but I've never done a mix with just drums. In a final mix, no one is going to noticed that you let the bleed back into the mix and it will only screw with phase distortion and panning clarity. IMO, bleed is useless. Sure it adds "life and realism" but that's what the overheads, room mics, and drum verbs are for. If you want isolation and clarity, clean those close mics as much as possible!

Hi Glenn, do you have any experience with recording drums with thinner cymbals than those that drummer is using for playing concerts? While my set up and playing is designed to reduce bleed, I always struggle to get my cymbals to come out cleanly in the mix - as to much overhead mixed with the close mics causes a bit to much sound traffic in the mix. This mix has the cymbals coming out pristine, and I love that. I may have to get this plugin.

Hi 1. Nice trick 2. Do you have an idea how to remove bleed from tom tracks without killing the attack? Drumatom works great on snare and bassdrum and Hihat. The bottom snare mic ist sometimes strange. At every 50th (statistically) hit you hear not the snare carpet but a wooden "dock". Seems there happens something strange. I havent figured out when this happens. I check all easy explanations (parallel cymbal, ride etc, hit). But its impossible to remove the bleed from toms. I tried some different things e.g. only toms and OH. But te result is very bad. Sometimes I can crank it up to 25%, sometimes even 1% kills the attack. 3. To get some bleedish clue theres annother trick. Use a Moses Schneider "Wurstmik" (wurst = germ. sausage). Any fucked up mik will do. I use my rusty rehearsal PG84. Put it there where snare, bassdrum and main toms are equally loud. Usuall above the bassdrum or in the hole between snare, bassdrum and 2dn tom. Or in the front of the set. No to far away, because then it becomes a actual room mik. We dont want this. Compress it heavely. E.g.british mode on the distressor. Pumping is welcome. You also can use some distortion. Remove the lowest low end, and the high noise (bandpass 150Hz - 2kHzor so). Add this track to your mix so that you cannot actually hear it. Or raise the fader until you hear this dirty ummpf-umpf and then a little bit lower again. I knew the trick long time ago, but I though it was not suitable for metal where you want a clean sound. I rediscoverd it by rehearsal room (==studio) live recording by mistake. Actually the bleed from the drums into the singers mik.

Love your videos man! You can tell how passionate you are about your craft, and that's great to see. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and I'm wanting to do some demo type recording. I purchased an M-Audio MK II recently for cheap, and it came with some free software. This included Air Strike Drummer, which I've only messed with a little so far. Now, obviously, real drums are preferred and I could do it, but I simply don't have the space or the hardware to do it properly; even for a demo style mix. Do you have any experience with Air Strike Drummer? It has a lot of bells and whistles to make it sound more authentic (granted it will never be as authentic as the real thing). I would like to buy a set of in-ear monitors to be able to listen to music from a source like my phone or a laptop (preferably my phone)and play along to it. What in-ears are not too expensive but not too shabby? What other gear do I need to send the signal from my phone to the in-ears? Any other gear you would recommend to take practicing and rehearsing with the band to the net level? And finally: One, two, three, flour, shit floor, for... I mean FOUR! There, nailed it.

If you want some bluetooth IEMs, you could go for a pair of Jaybird Bluebud X's. Shure SE215s are the most widely recommended IEM on the market for drumming I'm pretty sure, but I have a pair of RHA MA750i's and I love them, since I like more mid-rangey headphones instead of something with lots of bass boost. But it's all preference, if you like the extra bass I recommend SE215s, but if you're going to use the foam eartips I suggest you buy some Comply Sports on Amazon, since they are 100x better and last way longer than the other Comply tips.

I'd also like to throw in that for a lot of people*, samples would actually come out sounding better on their tracks than if they took at stab at real drums. It's more than just having an actual drum set. There's way more setup than that to get a good sound. When you start taking into account multiple mics and placement, room treatment, and all the mixing and and processing like this you need knowledge of, it's way too much for your average bedroom joe. Drum samples that are already tracked in professional studios, and set into an easy to use GUI often yield superior results than what an amateur is capable of on their own, not to mention way more flexibility, with the multiple sets and pieces available at the click of a button. *I'm just talking home use. Don't nobody come in here yelling at me about professional productions.

If you're working on your own as a songwriter or just writing quick demos for your band, having samples are good. Having an actual drummer with good mics or good mixing techniques is a lot better because it gives a different feel. Each drummer or every songwriter has a different feel in them. Plus, it's a lot better having an actual drummer doing it.

Yo Glenn, I know you're a stickler for getting natural drums and getting it done right in the recording, but I recently came across an old technique where one can "re-amp" a snare, for more natural "drum replacement" kind of recording. Basically you pump the original snare transients thru a monitor with a different snare sitting on the speaker, and mic the snare reacting to it. It results in a more natural sound, as the drummer's "feel" remains largely intact, as they're essentially playing on a new drum. Just curious about how you feel about re-amping something like a snare or kick? It's technically analog drum replacement and I don't see it being any different than DI tracking and re-amping a guitar, but since you're REALLY adamant about drums, I want your thoughts. Thanks!

yyeeeaaah, im a bass player, let the hate flow ;) BUT, i think it comes down to personal preferrence, because i think the gated mix sounds a bit more natural, the drumatom "compression?"(duh, dumb bassist) sounds a bit too clean for my taste in this example. maybe a bit more bleed in the drumatom mix would add that too ... just my 2 cents on this, and now i cant afford Bass Strings :/

Drumatom fixes everything that i felt was wrong with your drum mixes. Gating sounded like the kit was just gasping for air, the mix just didnt breathe right. The drum kit however still sounds a little to sterile, sounds like there could be a room mic added for a reverb effect, you know right now it sounds like drums are being recorded in a reeeeally small room. so a little more reverb or a room mic turned a few db up would be my suggestion. In a final mix it sounds like you can hear the snare and kick too much and they decay too fast. the drum sound is just not coherent, mostly because of too short snare decay. Great demo btw this is just a honest opinion, not saying that I could have done any better ;)

Glenn: What do you think about EZdrummer? I can play set, and would love to have an actual drumset, but there isn't enough space in my house, and I don't own enough mics, so cost would be quite steep. Struggles of being a student lol. That being said, I personally am impressed by the EZdrummer software, but want a pro's take on it. Great vid too. Yeah, i suppose it's technically an ad, but I can see how legitimately useful this plugin would be.

Personally I would avoid anything made from Toontrack. I may not be a pro but after trying out EZdrummer(You can get a demo version) I would much prefer to use the samples included with my Yamaha keyboard. Same goes with their piano, it's a joke. I suggest you look at other programs such as Drum forge and BFD3.

+WackkaCOInc I'm sort of back and forth on Toontrack. I think they have some good programs and some shitty ones, and even then, they all have their own pros and cons when you dig deeper, but it's not really fair to judge EZ Drummer on a demo version you got. Some kits sound better than others and work better in different contexts and different styles of music. They aren't all recorded in the same place, or by the same people, and the expansions can vary drastically in terms of their sound. So to write off the entire thing based on one tiny sample size is a bit irrational.

flips220 Well I think that a demo should be a good representation of a product, so while the full version may be better without the restrictions I still base my opinion on the demo since that sort of is the whole point of a demo, to sample a product if you want to buy or not.

WackkaCOInc Fair enough. That is indeed the point of a demo, but I guess the EZ Drummer format just doesn't lend itself well to a demo evaluation then. That's like playing one set of drums, then deciding that every other drumset out there sounds bad because you didn't like your starter kit. I figure the demo version is more to show you how the program works and controls. But again the sound varies drastically based on the kit you have loaded up. When you start dealing with expansions, it starts feeling more like it's just an interface to load up the samples recorded by different people in different studios. The drums recorded by Andy Sneap in LA don't sound like the drums recorded by Chuck Ainlay in Nashville, etc. etc. And it's not fair to judge one's work based on the other's. Don't get me wrong, I know what you're saying, I don't like the Basic set that comes with EZ Drummer either, but I have a couple of the metal expansions and I've pieced together some custom kits that sound pretty good, to me anyway. And I'm not shilling for Toontrack either, like I said, I like some of their stuff, and some of it I don't. I use Addictive Drums just as much as EZ Drummer. But I tend to look at stuff on an individual basis, rather than writing off an entire company based on one little demo I may not have liked.

I think, you can get a better result by combining drumatom and gates. F.e. get rid of the snare bleed just as much as there is no change in sound of the snare. So you have a natural snare sound with a little bit of bleed. Then use a gate to get rid of the bleed between the snare hits or cut the snare out manually. You can let reaper do this for you. Then take the original snare track and the new snare track and switch phase. Now you have a bleed track and a nice natural snare track without bleed. To much drumatom is not the solution in my opinion. Recently I mixed the new album of german grindcore Band Japanische Kampfhörspiele and didn't use any gates or drumatom and it worked, because the drummer plays very good. Maybe don't make a rule of getting rid of bleed. Trying to work with bleed first might be a good idea. Just a german asshole's opinion. Ah, you can listen to one new song here on youtube: Japanische Kampfhörspiele Weiss
