To be able to understand music and fill the void where most musicians can’t even comprehend filling in time is such an underrated art. The average mind doesn’t enjoy when drums are played like this. This is drums in it’s TRUE art form. A voice that demands to be heard ONLY by the finest listeners.

I tend to stay away from labeling someone as the greatest. When I find titles like that on KZbin I’m usually disappointed. But in the case of this drummer. I would label this guy as the greatest drummers or at the very least one of the greatest in the world ! I’ve heard some great drummers before, but this guy is incredibly mind blowing !

For those wondering: The song they are riffing is "How Much A Dollar Cost" by Kendrick Lamar. Many understand the actual sample of Kendrick's song to be from a song called "Seven Days of Falling". Some speculate the sample's concept was borrowed from "Pyramid Song" by Radiohead, but this is heavily debated.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here, with a preface; I will never, ever be this good at playing the drums. Ever. But, even after 17 years of playing drums, I just can’t get into this style of off rhythm drumming. What he’s playing has no relation , rhythmically, to the string section. It is phenomenally technical and I appreciate his style, fitness, and flow. But there is no correlation between the drums and strings. If someone can explain it to my pleb brain, that’d be great. And I get that it is intentional, no duh. But I just can’t.
@Mike_Webb782 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Just a bunch of pointless fast fills over and over. But there’s a group of people that dig this mess….
@GrampaPiggie2 жыл бұрын
i think of it like a story. the role that drums normally play in a group of musicians is as a rhythmic background that serves as a lattice for a melody to weave with and create an emotion in the listener. When the drummer is going apes**t and isn't serving that backbone of rhythm it creates tension and chaos. Like how a melodic scale will use minors and tritones to instill discomfort in the listener until the phrase is resolved. In this segment I listen to the guitars. What are they playing and what do they make me feel? What they're playing are slow, rhythmic strums on chords, and the chords they're using instill a sense of melancholic hopefulness for me. They are serving the rhythm, becoming the backbone for the melody; they are telling a story. Now the drums are using the rhythmic lattice made by the guitars to weave its own melody through it. Instead of being woven neatly and played strictly within the rhythm, they are disjointed and chaotic. This adds another emotion for me, which would be anger, frustration, or fear. An outburst of primal emotions for a few minutes. How does this relate to the guitars? And more importantly, the song? This segment displays disjointed rhythm and melody juxtaposed by their usual uses in music. What that creates for me is a sense of normalcy set aside but still present. It's always gonna be there, but right now for this moment there is chaos. And it resolves. At the end the drummer locks back in, very smoothly might I add, while the guitars keep strumming. Life goes on.
@djketler Жыл бұрын
@@GrampaPiggie Yes! The point is that is resolves. The in between is always free, grappling with chaos, sometimes rendering things very ordered (so the drums become the "backbone") and other times, more primal, chaotic, and in this case angry or warlike (as you said). I love how you put that - the style is hard to understand unless we see it as a story!
