Thank you for your quick response Jeff! One more question.....what is your suggestion if those lines have been mudded already without tape? Should I soften it up with a super wet sponge to reduce the compound so it doesn’t bulge out and then put the tape on and mud?

Jeff, Just finished installing the Kerdi board and membrane in my brand new basement shower. Because of your channel, I can convert an old toilet drain into a shower drain, with proper venting, pour a packed mortar shower pan with the correct slope, completely water and vapor proof an old 3X4 basement toilet “room” and I’m about to figure out how to lay tile. Oh, and I’ve also run PEX using shark bite fittings, and have replaced my old black pipe gas lines with CSST. Not only am I saving money, but I have the pleasure of knowing that “I (we) did this. Thanks!!

Several comments refer to use of NoCoat to get perfect 90's. At one BigBox store in the US they sell a product called Straight-Flex Perfect 90 (Model # P90-100-12). Perhaps not cost effective for pros who have to compete on price, but as a DIY person who considers taping and floating almost an art form, I found it well worth the extra price. A texture guy offered me a job because he said my corners were the best he had ever seen (for DIY).

The rounded drywall knives/trowels came out in the time of the introduction of the rounded corners and angles. There is an actual v-shaped angle trowel that most drywall supply houses carry. Still, the best angle is achieved by doing one side, then after it sets up or dries do the other side of the angle. 20 min mud is good for this if your in a hurry, otherwise we come back to it using ready mix after a couple hours. But hey there's no rule on how to use a tool if it gets the job done. Sometimes I grind down my old flimsy 6 inch knives into a circle for rounded angles or odd areas. Great video.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but this rubber knife is called a “coving knife”. It’s an old school tool for off angles typically a cape style roof attic space. Found at the knee wall to rake ceiling joint or at flat to rake area. There are specialty tapes like “no coat” which have given the opportunity to square those areas up vs rounded / coved. Which is better on outside angles. I professionally use this knife.

good content and I've seen that tool before just can't remember where. I frame houses currently in upstate N.Y. and have participated in all phases of home construction from poured walls to the roof and I will always be teachable because nothing better than learning something that I can add to my skill set that will help my finished product turn out to my standards i have used a 6" taping knife in the past to tape my inside corners and while working for a local contractor last summer I was introduced to the taping knife that is designed to skim the inside corners and my inside corners turn out flawless using this knife it's not quite a 90 degree corner tool it's underbent so when you apply pressure with you pointer and middle finger it presses into the corner tight and as you know taping drywall is a skill that not all can figure out and I only learned because I had good teachers and I'm always watching

Jeff, thanks for the recent drywall/mudding videos! Your explanations of whats going on with the materials and why certain processes work better than others are great. I have a 20 year-old house that is displaying long lengths of hairline cracks along the edge of the corner bead. How can those be repaired prior to painting. I have tried painting over them and even some paintable caulk, but they still come back.

Another solution to these areas is No-Coat. Eliminates both the rounded corner which is VERY tricky to make look perfect as well as less chance of cracking. These rounded corners use a lot of mud which as it dries adds to the possibility of cracks. Just my opinion obviously. I have this tool, liked it but found this other option less work with far superior results.

Hello Jeff! I have a question. I’m currently renovating my house and I’ve ran into a drywall issue and I need some advice. During the process, I had a guy do a complete drywall job that I’ve known for years but he has disappeared. I have absolutely zero experience with home improvement, but I’m forced to complete the job my self. I’ve subscribed to your channel. In some areas you can still see the mesh tape from the first coat. In order areas, the drywall hasn’t even been taped but was suppose to. And he mudded anyway and now you can see cracks. Since watching a few of your videos, I’m working on a bed room before I try the kitchen, living and dining room. Over the cracks where it’s suppose to be mesh tape, I just used a extremely wet towel, wiped it down and mudded. I’m going tomorrow to see the results before I apply the final coat if it looks decent. You’ve motivated me to take care of my own business!!! The advice I was given was to cover it with 1/4 in drywall, tape and much it again. I don’t have the time or patience for that. Do you have any possible suggestions? And do you anticipate lines cracking in the future without the mesh? Lastly, under what circumstances and areas should corner beads be used? Should they be used on every corner, even if I plan on putting a molding in some corners just to make it pop? Thanks in advance for your time and advice!!

With a HEAVY build up coat ad this, I would be very surprised if he didn't use a quick setting mud... 20, 45 or 90 minute mud would be appropriate. He's good and fast do he could get away with 20 minute. Using all purpose here would be a time waste... would take to long to dry and would probably crack and would probably need 4 to 5 coats total. He should get away with 3 coats here.

You mention basement renovation so I will ask you a question. I do not have a basement nor am I wanting to build a liveable height 'basement'. I want to build a simple small room under my house to put a few servers (computer) in. I live in Australia in a brick veneer house on concrete stumps (very standard Australia construction). When asking the internet how much soil I can remove to clear out some more vertical space they say 'some'. Any idea on how much 'some' is? because I have no idea. I'm only really looking to make anything I build level (property on a slight angle) and I'm not removing any stumps, just building between them. Thanks for any help, or a point in the right direction.

Sounds like a fun project. I would get an engineer to do a house visit and get recommendations. structure should always be designed. It only costs a few hundred bucks and you get peace of mind. Cheers!

I do have sloped ceilings at a 45 (not 90) in my den. This looks easy, but I wanted a very sharp break in that slope, not a gentle curve... please, do they make a version that creates a sharp edge and would it WORK well? Or can you trim the rubber tool to have flat edges? (Original drywallers did an atrocious job despite having this very tool! I think they were tired by the time they got to this part of the job. I redid one long seam when we added in a closet on that side, and have yet to do the other side. Meanwhile we have the prob of slightly popping screws in that drywall -- the whole garage moves a bit in our storms. Not going to be able to beef the structure up; I've thought perhaps my only recourse to fix the pops and the 45's in the ceiling is shallow wooden beams and panels. )

Thanks. Hard cut, that's the term. I can do that. Iterative-ly. (Not a real word, I think, but a good description of me and drywall work, lol, though I'm not as bad as many I've seen. I've appreciated your videos to help us improve skills. )
