she’s definitely not overrated. she has significantly better form than every gymnast out there, she gets more height and has better landing body positions. and in the video she got that E score, she didn’t have any big steps/movements on landings.

Yes she does tend to take large hops, but it’s her technique and precision in the air that gives her the edge. Her body position and form is superb.

Not underrated. We know how amazing she is, she just hasn't been able to hit at major competitions. Her time will come though!

One potential way to increase the consistency of judging is to increase the transparency of E score deductions. This would hold the judges accountable and they would have more incentive to be as consistent as possible across gymnasts with whatever they decide to deduct.

Haha yup. It’s tough. I know they want to withhold the judges from too much scrutiny, but FIG really needs to work toward making the sport as objective as possible. Not only is that the only fair thing to do for the gymnasts, but it will also help the sport be taken more seriously by the broader culture.

Yes, but she's receiving a lot preferences in execution grade for having that level of difficulty. I know that her tumbling form is great (except big hops and flexed feet), but not so superior on the leaps and probably should have some artistry deductions, imo. Like come on, where is the "complex choreography" there? Rest of the gymnasts just didn't consider on the same range by judges even for execution scoring.

She hit her split position, she pointed her feet despite of having flat feet, the amplitude was good, and the only problem was her Gogean which she barely made it all the way around.

@@user-do2ht2qk9z Do you know lack of complex choreography only 0.1 deduction. And no, artistic is not something objective that you can simply deduct until 1 point out of 10. You clearly have no idea what flat foot (pes planus) is. People born with flat foot have hard time to point their feet because of lack of arch. But the judges are aware of this and they know when gymnasts with flat foot actually point their feet or when they're not. Good thing you're not one of the judges. Hell I'm not even sure if you know how the scoring works.

Thank you so much for all the research and archival work you obviously must do on these projects. They're so fun to watch, and the scores give a guideline of fairness--to my mind, more reliable than the many "my top ten" lists out there (though I like watching those too). p.s. I always find the couch judges very funny.

I don't think the next Pan-Am Games will have the same judging panel. Because if there's one thing this series has done it is inadvertently highlight the blatant politics that took place at that competiton--esp with regards to FX scores.

@@AvocadoSmoothie The thing is, the Arizona Sunrays is not only a gym, but also a dance centre! Meaning she has literally NEVER had an excuse for such poor choreography. So at this point I'm sorry but I think Carey might be beyond saving; at least by Tokyo. I would like her to at least attempt a more complete routine as she is planning to compete at the Olympics, but in time we shall see. Otherwise she'll just have to use what she has and hope for the best.

Seeing how low the d-scores are here compared to say bars I understand the proposal in the new code to downgrade connections. It is interesting how so many of these good e-scores were for particularly low d-scores (again, unlike your bars video if I remember right). With the glaring exception of Simone who is not only .5 higher difficulty than the next most difficult (and a point and a half from the majority), her e-score is also way higher - 0.1 difference from 20th to 7th, and then Simone is 0.2+ above that, 0.1 higher than 2nd. It's just nuts

The craziest part of this is that Simone has a difficulty score WAYYYY above anyone else but still manages to make the moves look EASY. Lord knows they aren’t but she actually makes it look effortless. That’s the true definition of gymnastics. It’s beautiful and so hard but you make it look so simple and elegant. Her last tumbling pass is harder than most peoples first.

Well, other girls are basically deducted on every element for the lack of amplitude or/and low chest whereas Simone has amplitude enough plus and lands in almost straight position.

To me it looks like her feet are not yet in the right landing position, whereas her body is. The judges might deduct for that, since her feet are 3/4 of the way there

Even in slow motion, Simone's form is impeccable. I mean, they still found over a point in deductions, but still light years beyond the others. Some in this video had 0.6 or so deductions on one pass. So, either they are overscored or Simone is underscored. Still, the CoP is ridiculous if the best in the world aren't up in the 9.7ish range. I guess my point is that the COP doesn't do a good job of spreading the gymnasts out, score wise. No one is near 10, and too many are lumped 8.3-8.7.

sorry to say but I'm kinda sick seeing Chinese tumblings pass mostly twisting and twisting, really wish there will be a Chinese floor worker who can pull maybe a H skill like the double double. Like cheng fei or wang yan. I can imagine when the Chinese in the same subdivision with the americans during floor rotation. No offense, this is just my opinion ✨
