@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
@@Sasukej2004 hey thanks so much for that compliment and for the question. Sorry it took me so long to reply. Love you. Hey thanks for the question. One thing to start to ask yourself if considering physics is - what’s the plan with the physics degree? It’s hard to advocate for a physics degree. There are essentially no benefits of a physics degree over engineering. Only disadvantages in my view. 1. Immediate Employability. You cannot enter the job market anywhere near as well as with a comparable engineering degree like electrical or aerospace engineering. There are just 20,500 jobs for physicists & astronomers in the USA vs 328,000 electrical engineers and 66,000 aerospace engineers. 2. Advanced Degree Required. Most of these physicists in the 20,000 have a PhD in the field. Most engineers do not, and a few will have a masters degree. 3. Flexibility. An engineering degree can get you into most if not all adjacent doors. Only 35% or physics majors go on to become engineers with many doing computer science and other avenues after like finance or teaching. 4. If you decide you want to do physics masters later or get your PhD in physics, then you can still do so with an engineering degree. For these reasons, the only purpose of a physics undergraduate major to me is that the student is so passionate about physics and knows they want that as a career, and probably know they want their PhD in physics. And that’s so hard to know at age 17, that it’s really hard for me to understand how someone could choose physics. Does all this make sense? Thank you for the comment !!

@@JakeVoorhees Yeah, I bet. I was thinking about some of my BioMed friends like “yikes, that’s rough”. I chose mechanical for the exact reason you mentioned, I liked everything that was applied science and it just seemed like the most general. I’m a third year and recently found out that I really want to pursue robotics. I don’t know too much about the electrical aspects of it but am picking up some software skills in ROS and c++/python. I get pretty psyched when I get to use advanced math from my math degree and robotics has plenty of that to go around lol. Dream job would be something like working on that Neuralink robot, but honestly everything that has to do with robots is pretty sick.
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
@@gonzalezm244 very cool interests and passion to love towards robotics. It’s the future. I get a lot of questions about mechatronics engineering - probably more than any other subset of engineering nowadays. . I think mechatronics is the future. It is the intersection of mechanical and electrical engineering, so you can lean into either the physical design side i.e. mechanics, or the electrical engineering aspects which would include the circuitry, signals and controls, power, automation, and programming aspects. I think a mechatronics engineer who leans into the electrical engineering side of things is VERY well suited for the future. Here are some videos that you may be interested in: . “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNfY2Zhrd_mtU . “Is Mechatronics Engineering a Good Career? kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5yzfJ93a89jnJo . There are only 28 ABET mechatronics engineering programs in the world and just 3 in the USA. So oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is a great path. Some universities have a formal certification program within EE/ME/CPE, or you may have to build it yourself. You would do that by for example, majoring in EE and taking more electronics courses and less about power or telecommunications. You would take robotics electives, signals and controls, and circuits courses, etc. Your CS related courses should revolve around mechatronics rather than something else, and so on. Computer Engineering is often a subset of Electrical Engineering. But sometimes engineers struggle to choose between ME vs EE/CPE. This video will help you decide, “Mechanical VS Electrical Engineering” kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIGtXoytataJqcU . These will probably be helpful as well: “What Do Mechanical Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6iopZiOr82nl80 “What Do Electrical Engineers Do” kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIPEqH5_a7amo5I “What Do Computer Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/npqvXpaKl99kbpo . I also ranked Mechatronics Engineering as one of the only two S-Tier Mechanical Engineering options in this video, “Mechanical Engineering Job Tier List” kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZnbc3-ber2Sha8 . This is a good video. I think that the tier list is definitely well thought out, practical, and helpful. I think electrical engineering should be number one, and computer science number 2. My reasoning is that an electrical can get into computer science somewhat easily, but the computer science person, not so much. Having an understanding of both the electronics and programming aspect is powerful, not to mention with electrical engineering, you can have access to some aspect of the computer science job base and the electrical engineering job base for sure.

This is the most common question I get. Here is a detailed way to help you decide. This is a situation I see pretty often. It’s really hard to know which field to go into within engineering. Continue to work hard and follow your dreams, chase your interests, and make sure to always keep your options open and your optimism up. There is not "right time" to choose a major, but there is a loose formula for attempting to know the best choice at the time. You have to look at your skills and interests around engineering.There are only three big engineering categories, so lets start there. Each of Civil/Mechanical/Electrical are the only fields in the USA with over 300,000 jobs. Chemical for example, is just 32,600. Biomedical, 21,000. Even Aerospace at 65,000 or Environmental with 55,000 roles are good choices. Either way, let's look at the big three first. Mechanical. Mechanical Engineers work in a few main categories including machine component and manufacturing design, heating ventilating and cooling systems for buildings, and thermal and fluid systems. If you take apart things and put them back together, want to invent things, 3D print, model stuff, and tinker and build things, then ME may be for you. There can be some programming involved, especially if you start to lean towards the Mechatronics side of the industry, which begins to incorporate more electronics/computer engineering with some programming. But you can avoid a lot of programming if you choose. Civil. Civil Engineers have five areas of specialty. They design and build buildings and bridges and other structures, transportation systems, geotechnical systems (under the ground), they work with the environment/water resources, and then coastal. Construction Engineering and Management is another similar industry that civil engineers can work in. If you were the engineer building legos, playing sim city, and wanting to build things rather than take apart stuff and put it back together, you could be a civil engineer. You can also be very much less of a programmer and get away with it. I am a civil engineer, and I have essentially zero programming skills. Electrical. Also called "Electrical & Electronics Engineering". This field is probably the best for the future. Electrical engineers work with electrical power/dist/generation, telecommunications, semiconductor design and manufacturing, signals & controls, aerospace parts and manufacturing, and research and development. Electrical engineering is very different from civil/mechanical because it is theoretical rather than tangible. You cannot see electricity or magnetism, and you cannot see what is happening with circuits or semiconductors. Because of this, EEs take more math and harder math, besides PDEs that mechanical engineers must take like fluid/thermodynamics. But EE is considering the most math and harder math, and because its 100% theoretical, typically an EE can learn ME math and adapt to the physica word easier than a ME or CE can do the other way around. Unlike in CE and usually in ME, EEs must be good programmers too. EEs often can work as software developers or software engineers after university, because they require so much coding skill. This also means EE is the safest for the future, as there are 1.4M software developer jobs growing at a rate of 22% right now. Thats more jobs than CE/ME/EE/IE (industrial engineering is 4th with 285,000 jobs) combined. Industrial. This would be the 4th consideration, particularly if you are not as good at math, are a better communicator, and want to work more with people other things rather than design or calculations or the "engineering work" within the engineering world. Industrial Engineering is very different from other engineerings in that it considered the entire system perspective, rather than simply optimizing the parts of the systems themselves first, which is what most engineering does. In IE, you must consider the entire system first in order or maximize the sum of the parts. IEs work in manufacturing, human factors, safety optimization to eliminate injury, etc. Outside of the big 3 and then IE, there are smaller branches like mentioned before. Computer engineering is very similar to EE, Aerospace engineering can be achieved with an ME degree and many AEs go to grad school, chemical engineering is so small that I only recommend it if you are from a very chemical engineering heavy country. Biomedical engineering is very small and in my opinion, should then be avoided for undergrad. Environmental engineering is 55,000 strong, and same thing as AE. You can get into environmental engineering through civil engineering. In fact, my degree is called "Civil & Environmental Engineering" so I could do just that if I want. There are other small engineering majors too, like materials or petroleum, nuclear and manufacturing, but you can get into any of these my majoring in one of the big 3 and ending up there in your career. Choose one of the big 3, and you will be fine. Does this make sense and help? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay? I respond to 100% of comments. I will be making a new how to choose an engineering major video soon, thanks!

@@JakeVoorhees Hey! Wow! Thanks for being super comprehensive! I’ve watched your other two videos on how to choose a college major and even took notes. I look forward to your next video on it! Just based on what you’ve said, my knee-jerk response is that I’d enjoy Mechanical. As a child, I always seemed to be interested in taking things apart (with no luck putting them back together). Although, the futurism of Electrical is catching my eye too. Understanding the magic of the modern world and the technology of the future seems pretty sick. Outside of those two, Nuclear interests me mainly because I think nuclear energy (fission and fusion) is an interesting topic, and Computer interests me because video games are really cool. Hey thanks for the comment. I get a lot of “Aerospace vs Mechanical Engineering” questions. I support pure aerospace in some situations because there are a pretty good amount of jobs, 66,000 in the USA which puts it at #6 on the list. Especially if you live somewhere with solid AE industry or are willing to relocate, and you are in LOVE with the idea of working in AE for a career. I would do AE if I had to do everything over again. I'd choose AE over Civil. Make sure you see these AE videos, “What is Aerospace Engineering? What do Aerospace Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHXEYZl4a9CrjMU “Aerospace Engineer Interview | How To Get A Job At Boeing | How To Get A Job At Lockheed Martin” kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKazcpyXpNN_qLM And here are some resources for the ME route,, "What Do Mechanical Engineers Do?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6iopZiOr82nl80 and this one looks at careers like automotive, aerospace, product engineering for ME, "Jobs for Mechanical Engineers", kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmqYomCaa6uKjLs. A little over 30% of Aerospace engineers have a master's about about half just have a bachelors. You can become an aerospace engineer with either avenue, pure AE or ME with a focus in AE as a concentration. It all depends on what you want for your career. The benefit of doing ME is that it's more broad and you have more options. Sometimes students think they are going to love one sector, and then start a career there and don't like it. That is where the ME would be beneficial. You can always go to grad school in AE if you like to gain an advantage, and possibly find an employer to fund and support that. The benefit of going for AE in undergrad is that you will have an advantage over MEs if you want to get started with your career right out of undergrad, which is what I recommend. I did not go straight into working after university, and I sort of regret tha myself. So it's up to you. Some students are 100% set on grad school, and if that is the case, this entire decision matters much less. Also, I do not think people should go out of state and save $$$ and maybe your state doesn't even have any aerospace engineering programs, and you should just do mechanical based on financial reasons. I HIGHLY encourage you and your family to save the $$$ unless you guys are super well off and your parents are going to just pay for all of it. Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have. I respond to 100% of comments, cheers thanks!

Biomedical engineering majors don't fret! Most roles in medical engineering aren't going to be called biomedical engineer because that would be a very vague job description for making medical devices. Instead, you will find roles such as mechanical, systems, electrical, design (CAD) and software engineers which you can then apply your degree to any of, assuming you can demonstrate the multidisciplinary skills your course gave you. These roles then work on one aspect of the device as part of a team, rather than one person trying to do all of it. This means figures like this one are going to be misleading as they only account for the rare situations where your job title will actually be "Biomedical Engineer". In the medical device sector your degree will give you the edge over people who went into pure mechanical etc. as it shows your dedication to the medical industry to a company, and that you know exactly where you want to be. Just be careful to choose actually decent modules (not just the easy sounding ones) and focus on the knowledge you gained from those specific modules in interviews and on your CV, as biomedical engineering can be very broad. If it turns out that you don't fancy biomedical after all, I would recommend again focusing on any modules relevant to the degree you want to work in. For example if I wanted to switch to a systems engineering role, I could talk about the modules in systems design and control engineering I've completed in interviews. It also helps to have projects outside of university, in particular things like Arduino, ESP32 embedded software programming, making games in C#, designing PCBs etc can all show off your passion for another engineering discipline. I'm currently doing an internship at a multinational medical device company and the R&D department is gigantic, but not one of us is called a biomedical engineer. Personally, my title falls mostly under mechanical engineer. There's also manufacturing engineers and quality assurance engineers, a good few of which have biomedical engineering degrees. TL;DR Biomedical engineering is a skeleton key to get into any other engineering role in the medical industry, and usually isn't a defined role in itself. Please like this if you found it helpful to stop a biomedical engineer from dropping out in their final year unnecessarily! :)

I feel like Chemical Engineering gets a bad rep because it's so hard and Chemical Engineering positions are harder to define. However, I feel like it's one of the few majors that encompasses many different industries that ChemEs can go into. I work in the flexible packaging industry while I have friends who went into water desalinization, others are in Pharma, some in Petroleum and surprisingly a lot of people I graduated with work in computer processing and semiconductors. ChemE's can go for Environmental Engineering jobs, Petroleum Engineering and even Materials engineering jobs but the same can't be said for the others. Finally, I think Electrical Engineering should probably be first. It's the hardest major in my opinion but it's also a major that allows you to work in different fields like Energy, automotive and most importantly in computer design and processing. An Electrical Eng can easily fit into Computer Engineering positions if they better their coding skills but the same can't be said for Computer Engineers. I think I personally gravitate more towards the majors that can encompass many different industries while still being well paid rather than constricting majors where there is not as much mobility in all industries. Great video nonetheless explaining your own opinion.

I think your chemical engineering bit is a little bit off, since working in pharma can be chemical engineering. Engineering pharmaceuticals is chemical engineering, especially since a lot of chemical engineering programs are focused on biomolecular engineering. Same thing can be said about chemical engineerings who work in food, or any industry really. So many industries use chemicals in some way. I’ve heard it put that chemical engineering is about turning raw materials into useful stuff. Pretty much every industry does that. Anything fermentation based like biofuels or beer production uses chemical engineering. Silicon chip production uses chemical engineering (not the actual designing of the chip and what not, the production of the chip itself) Like you said, I can’t believe there are just 32,000 chemical engineering jobs. Maybe strictly speaking when it comes to chemical engineerings working in chemical plants and in oil that might be true, but that’s assuming that’s what the definition of a chemical engineering job is.

Heyyy thanks for the comment. Yeah chemical engineers can get great jobs, and a few of th 11,000 graduates per year get them. I am sure your friend is one of them. The odds seem stacked against ChemEs vs other engineering. The numbers reflect this, and so does this video. In a way, I am inviting ChemEs to show up and prove somehow that all these graduates are being looked after and are getting awesome jobs in awesome sectors. But so far in my 4 year mentorship journey, it doesn't seem to be the case. What type of engineering are you thinking - ChemE? There are good things about it, and here they are. It's incredibly vast and flexible. Chemical engineers can work in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, design and construction, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, food processing, specialty chemicals, microelectronics, electronic and advanced materials, polymers, business services, biotechnology, and environmental health and safety industries, among others. Chemical engineers also are in the top 5 highest paid among engineers, with a median salary of $108,770. There are 155 ABET accredited chemical engineering programs in the USA to choose from, and the industry growth is 4% right now which isn't horrible for an engineering industry. The graduate degree ratio is also the lowest among other engineer industries, with only about 20% of degrees being Masters/PhDs. A chemical engineering undergraduate degree has a lot of power. Finally, chemical engineering repeatedly sits at #2 or #3 of the most challenging undergraduate majors, usually based on GPA, so you get incredible respect by saying, "I'm a Chemical Engineer". I have these pro-Chemical Engineering videos too, “What can Chemical Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/enioqKJ9n7KDZq8 and a “Chemical Engineer Interview” kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6Cbgq2bftF7q80 Does that help and make sense? When I was at an internship though, I got exposed the the process control side of things (PLC, DCS, historians, networking, OPCs, etc.) and I thought it was fabulous. Now I'm a full-blown controls engineer, which is typically a field dominated by electrical engineers. I think more important that just getting an engineering degree is to secure an internship, do research with a professor, create prototypes, perform experiments. Do something that shows that you are well-rounded and put in more than the minimum effort. Believe in yourself, and "sell your brand" well.

@The Algorithm In the end i came to realise that I couldn’t decide on a degree that would narrow the possible career path to just one field, so I went with my gut feeling and decided to pursue a joint honours in mathematical sciences and physics. I feel like this degree would cover most of the important aspects of both fields and after the bachelors if I wanted to still pursue engineering I would just take up a few extra classes and then go for a masters with what I already know in maths and physics. Few people actually pick the course that 100% suits, so if you pick a degree but it doesn’t fit you it’s certainly not the end of the world and all it takes is a little adaptation to aim for what you want to work as. Hope this helps

Well those two majors are veryyyyy different. Industrial engineering really is a separate type of engineering. It focuses on the system wide approach and has almost zero overlap with chemical. So its really hard for me to understand that transition. PLus, if you are smart enough to handle ChE, then Industrial Engineering is not the one for you. Hey thanks for the comment. Here are the industries where a lot of engineers go to grad school: Materials Engineering (54% of Materials degrees awarded per year are grad degrees), Environmental (47%), Electrical (46%), Industrial (46%), Nuclear (46%), and those are the only ones in the 40th percentile or higher. So there is some reason why these degrees have more graduate degrees. It’s because the undergraduate catchbasin are more limited, like environmental and industrial where so few people study it for bachelors but the industry needs more. Or, the industry is so broad like electrical engineering, where you sometimes should get a graduate degree in order to become a specialist. But it can be a good idea across the board in order to galvanize your career. That’s whats nice about engineering. You don’t really have to, but it can be a good idea. I made this video about how to get into grad school, even if you don’t have the best grades, like my situation. “How To Get Into Grad School with a Low GPA | How To Get Into Graduate School” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aomni6x9o5dqbbs Does this stuff help and make sense? Started doing a mechanical degree and ended up doing an electrical engineering degree. I've known people go into programming, finance, management etc. Personally I ended up doing process control in oil and gas and in all fairness it's more management than engineering. Honestly, it doesn't make much difference so long you do something that isn't too specific. I don't know what it's like in the states but in the UK the degrees generally are all common for the first year or two when you do everything (mechanical, civil and electrical) then you specialise later on, if anything I'd advise find somewhere that operates this way and just do whatever interests you because it's a hard enough course without being bored!

Hey thanks for the comment. I discuss it a little later in the video, but here is the way to know. In terms of education and application, the two are pretty similar. The difference in what you will work with. ME is all about the design of the components within machine design, thermal and fluid systems, and heating and ventilation systems in building. Civil engineering is all about the design and analysis of the very infrastructure systems themselves, like structures, transportation systems, geotechnical systems, and environmental. MEs design parts in a system, and civil engineers design the collection of those parts as they apply to infrastructure. ME is very broad as an ME can design the components for an engine, a plane, a product.... anything. Do you tinker and take things apart and put them back together. Or did you build lego and forts and play simcity type applications? Those are my analogies. If you list off the types of stuff you want to work with, I can help you from here. Does that make sense? Let me know, as I reply to all comments. Cheers!

Civil vs mechanical is sometimes confusing. Mechanical vs Electrical can be. Civil vs Electrical are very different. Electrical engineering is very theoretical, as you cannot see electricity or magnetism. Also, you need a significant amount of programming for EE. You need zero for civil. The main difference between EE and CE is - "do you want to do programming too?" if that answer is zero, CE or ME is better for you. Does that help and make sense? I’m in my masters year. The truth is 10-15 years ago almost every graduating student would have been snapped up by O&G companies, but the crash along with more advanced software (aspen etc) less engineers are needed. They also have a huge amount of experienced petroleum engineers actively looking for jobs, so the chance of you getting one as a graduate is slim. You absolutely can get an engineering job it just means that now internships, who you know etc are more important than before. You will have to do more work while you study to get a job. I’m hoping to go into pharma or extraction in mining ind. would be nice if you got some ChemE graduates that went into finance or a more business related role to talk about their experience, as the reality is many graduates will end up in these positions.

Whilst I love that you are suggesting against following advices from people like Shane, I was disappointed by two of your videos re: points about chemical engineering and engineers, which I will refer to as ChE and ChEs, respectively, hereafter. 1. ChE is more than just O&G and P&I. Yes, you can go into these two disciplines, but ChE is much more than that-pharmaceuticals, food, consumer products, battery and energy storage, materials, combustions, accelerators, polymers, minerals, semiconductors, synthetic biology, environmental. Those are just few of the areas ChEs work in. I won't argue which is the broadest engineering major (definitely ChE duh XD) but ChE is definitely one of the broadest. Different universities just have different foci. Some will focus on O&G and P&I, some will focus on process, some will focus on biotechnology, etc. 2. The one labelled as ChE jobs was based on the misconception that ChE = O&G. Again, point 1 that it isn't the case. 3. Process engineering IS ChE. Pharmaceuticals IS ChE. Jobs in these areas are highly dominated by ChEs. Why? Because ChE is more about large scales and streams than it is chemistry. Chemists are the ones who tend to be doing small scales. 4. The high number of people having low grades in ChE can be oversimplified into three things: (1) people who think that ChE is chemistry. NO, it is not; (2) people think that it is easy money. NO, it is not. ㄱㅁ(ChE = O&G); (3) ChE is difficult (Let's not talk about which is the most difficult engineering major because that is undoubtedly ChE XD). 5. ChEs who can't get jobs straight from understand are usually one of two oversimplified things: (1) they do not actually have experience into the field they are applying; (2) their experiences are not aligned to the field they are applying. These two often happen in ChE because of point 1 and 4-ChE is not what people think it is. Since you are also an engineer, I hope you don't become one of those people who, as you said, talk about things they don't understand about engineering.

I'm at the point where I have to start choosing what major I want, and electrical engineering has kind of been my no brainer simply cause my dad did it. I never really thought about what they did, what I would be studying, what I would be doing, so I started doing some research. To be completely honest, I've never really found stuff like robotics or building things super interesting, but for some reason electrical engineering always seemed so appealing, and I think this video cemented my choice. I don't like physics, I don't like math, but I love learning new things, and I think the fact that this field has so many things that need to be discovered and developed really sates my inner curiosity. Let's hope I can get through school smoothly chasing this career path.

@@slimabid611 hey whats up man, I actually ended up choosing computer science as my major. I took an intro to electrical engineering class and it was cool, but then I decided to try out coding and actually really enjoyed it. Plus the type of jobs you'd find in the computer science field were a lot more appealing to me (aka sitting at your desk for hours coding lol). If I ever did switch out of comp sci I'd probably fall back on computer engineering first and then electrical engineering next, but still seems like a fun major regardless! I'd encourage you to try it out, worst case scenario you realise it's not for you and you just switch majors

To me the only engineering majors to take are Civil, Electrical, Mechanical. All others are unstable, unreliable and are not recommended unless you have family connections or your family owns a business they can put you to work in. Look at what happened to Metallurgical Engineering, there are only about a handful of university departments still around. A big crash & burn there.

@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Robert, thanks for this comment. I need to make that video. The way to get internships or any sort of experience/opportunity or role in general is to reach out to people who already know you who may know someone working in the engineering niche that you are targeting. Examples may be a professor in that niche that you have had in the past, or a leader or officer of an engineering club/society/organization in the field you are focusing on, or someone that your family knows or a family friend, or someone you met at a job fair or conference or event in that niche, etc. Join Engineers Without Borders to get experience - there are local professional chapters you can join even if you are out of school. Go to hackathons to meet people and even build some experience. Anyone that you know - ask them for introductions to engineers or for informational interview opportunities if they are in engineering now (“Informational Interview Tips“ kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKm4paOwha1-oMU). After that, keep in touch, and then ask about internships and other opportunities. Even volunteer roles nowadays can be a good path to a paid internship. Does that make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have and I’ll try to help. I respond to all comments. Thanks!

That's a good point Muhmmed, but you also have to realize that EE, CE and ME, are broad as well. Am an EE from South Africa and most engineers in EE, CE and ME like Chemical Engineers, are competing for the same roles within other industries as-well such as in finance. So the broad nature of Chemical Engineers as you have stated compared to other engineering degrees becomes negligible in other industries apart from Oil and Gas. Furthermore, the one weapon more especially within EE that puts it at an advantage to all other engineering fields is the fact that they can code and are highly mathematical as we take mathematics up to 3rd year unlike other engineering courses and hence that would give them a competitive advantage over other engineers in many roles in other industries that requires an individual who simply has an engineering degree. By the way am a Junior Data Scientist within the retail and supply chain industry and hoping to get a break in the field of Telematics Engineering at an insurance company soon.

Would it be better to go with the combined degree rather than the one that’s only environmental engineering?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment. My civil engineering degree is technically, "Civil & Environmental Engineering" and that combo is very common. As for civil + environmental vs pure environmental, you'll for sure have more options with the civil engineering blend. There are 329,000 Civil jobs vs just 55,000 environmental. As for a bachelors + 1 for a masters program, its a great situation if you are already heavily considering a masters no matter what. But if you are taking out student loans or going out of state, that extra year of tuition can be avoided. I got my graduate school fully paid for by accepting a research assistantship role at UW-Madison. With this option, a 4+1, your school guarantees you are essentially there for another 25% of tuition $$$. But if money is no issue and you are already pretty sure on grad school, I like 4+1. Does this help and make sense? Let me know what follow up questions you have okay. Also, you'll have to decide your civil engineering focus, so check out this video that goes over the 5 branches of civil engineering, “What Do Civil Engineers Do” kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKTWe5aghK51baM this video is good too “Civil Engineering Have a Good Future | Good Major?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWPIlpeOit2Heq8 And this one is popular about structural engineering within civil, “Is Structural Engineering a Good Career?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/goSTl5eNo8-Djbs

Yeah I know right, thanks for the comment. I love mechatronics as a career path. But unfortunately for a degree, the options still are not quite there. There are only 3 ABET accredited USA bachelors programs and only 28 when you consider all programs in the world. They will add mechatronics programs eventually. Here are some videos that you may be interested in: “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNfY2Zhrd_mtU Since there are so few undergraduate mechatronics programs, oftentimes you have to choose EE or ME or CPE and do a degree concentration in mechatronics, which is fine. @JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment. It's a decent field, but its hard to say how many engineers are working in renewables, as there are only 32,600 chemical engineers employed in the USA in total. If you are going to do ChemE, I think the way to go is renewables though so I'm all for that. I have done a few videos about Energy Engineering, one with a Forbes 30 Under 30 Energy Engineer who is now an entrepreneur, named Tirthak Saha, and you can see that interview here: “Forbes 30 Under 30 Energy Engineer Interview” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6e1o4unmrGGhtk and I did another short interview with the Direct of Energy Engineering & Sustainability at a local technical college, and you can see that interview here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqCYkKCMZZKNhZI I’ve also done an interview with the Director of R&D with a carbon capture company in Europe called Climeworks, and you can see that conversation here, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fmqvmYyaj91kY5I I think it’s a great field with a lot of room to grow in the future, particularly if we want to actually keep living here on Earth. @JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment. Seems like you have it pretty much right. Here is my standard reply to this. Technically most of the time “Electrical Engineering” actually means electrical and electronics engineering because electronics is a subset of EE itself. Some places even call it EEE. And that’s why the main organization for EEs is IEEE. Electrical engineering itself focuses on the broader pure theoretical stuff like power, signals, communications, and magnetism. This requires a programming as well but less. Electronics engineering is typically more focused specifically on the design, optimization, and management of electronic devices. These EEs use far more programming, which is heavy in EE in general. But far more common for electronics subsets. Finally, I get the most questions about mechatronics, and in order to become a mechatronics engineer, focusing on electronics engineering is the way!! “What Do Electrical Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIPEqH5_a7amo5I And this one talks about high paying EE roles: “Jobs for Electrical Engineers over $100,000” kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJqXmZ55mrOKqZI Also, a lot of electrical engineers wish to work in mechatronics/robotics, so check out this video “What Do Mechatronics Engineers Do?” kzbin.info/www/bejne/aorNfY2Zhrd_mtU I hope these help. I graduated BSEE back in 1985. I work for semiconductor company in Austin TX. My company would hire Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineers or Computer Engineers. In general, all we look for are “resilient problem solvers”. You are good as long as you solve problems logically, and that you continuously improve your skills over time. Someone with an engineering degree but does not solve problems are not real engineers. My advise to you is that you make sure you find out if your professor worked in a real job before they became professors. If your professor has never worked in industry, don’t believe in everything they say because they may not have proven themselves to be real engineers.

Computer science is generally studied by those who intend to become software engineers. However, software engineers face rampant age discrimination. What is your perspective on this?
@JakeVoorhees
@JakeVoorhees 3 жыл бұрын
Yes true computer science is the degree that most successful software engineers suggest. It’s the parent path. There are only 30 ABET software engineering programs in the USA and 283 for CS, within engineering colleges, so that shows a lootttttt. Age discrimination is a thing. My instinct is that by recognition of that alone, you’re someone either my age (33) or older within the industry? And if you’ve taken the time to comment and ask this, you must be experiencing some level of career struggle breaking into, or achieving higher status levels within software engineering. My take on the situation is this. Discrimination is always a factor whether it be age, gender, race, etc. You’ll face it always. Discrimination is a form of stereotypes. People believe that if you’re a little older, you cannot possibly be as good of a programmer vs someone younger. But all engineers know that one older person in their industry who all the young gunners respect. Why? Because they managed to shatter the stereotype. We’re they given the benefit of the doubt early on? Nope. They had to prove themselves. Often times repeatedly and sure, go above and beyond what a younger person needed to do to achieve respect. That can be you. It sucks but that’s what lots of people need to do to earn respect by the masses. It’s what woman and people of color have to do in engineering every day. So now the question is, what are you going to do to prove yourself and add to all the awesome people working to break the age discrimination stereotype? If you want to brainstorm together, I’d love to 😀 thanks for a great comment, cheers !!
