Great test. If Nikon had a flippy screen, it could have won and became the go-to camera for all vloggers and youtubers. But everyone thinks it's the Canon or the Sony now. If you’re not shooting with them for extended periods of time really learning the camera and how it does things (like AF) these reviews become less and less valuable. @cooloox3 жыл бұрын
The Nikon AF is not rock solid. It might be for "what you do", but you have to accept in a broader range of conditions it can have issues. The AF test in the above video had a model in extremely harsh and changing lighting (something I'm sure you would not generally be doing on a paid job) and she was walking in and out of harsh light and heavy patchy shadows. It was a real AF stress test. Most AF systems struggle in backlit and harsh lighting situations. I have several cameras which give me virtually 100% hit rate, but I'm being selective in the conditions I shoot in. In the harsh conditions shown above, I know without bias my AF would fail at least some of the time.
@cooloox3 жыл бұрын
@@TaipeiGeek Err, lower hit rate doesn't mean it's worse? Lol. Nikon fanboys sure hate it when Nikons don't win. Want to see in 60 seconds what was proven in this video? Set your Nikon AF up however you like and have a subject walk through alternating backlighting to harsh patchy lighting to deep shadows (lack of lighting). Your AF will have a much poorer hit rate then you're used to. This was a real AF stress test. Fortunately, you won't normally be shooting in these conditions (if ever) and your hit rate will be far higher, generally. Keeping it real though, in every AF test I've watched online, the Nikon usually comes third.

I enjoyed the video - thank you both, along with the model. I'm not one of those who are so critical of specs and features but I do enjoy seeing the difference. I did want to point out that just because a brand has new lenses, that doesn't mean the older lenses should be written off. I'm not familiar enough with Canon and Sony, so this may not apply. With Nikon, most of their lenses since the late 1950s work with their cameras since then. Maybe not all capabilities but usable. As an example, I've used the 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.2 AI-S lenses on the Z7 without issue. The point being just because there is a new mount doesn't mean you have to replace your glass. What was a nice lens yesterday is still a nice lens. Also, many forget that lenses have character and it is not always about the specs. Again, thanks for sharing. Interesting video - a few issues that I see. 1) You need to consider many other things in comparing these systems. First and foremost - lenses. The Nikon Z lenses are superior in most respects to the other lenses for the other systems. Case in point - since you are comparing "lower end" systems lets look at the 50mm1.8 for example. The Z version is the winner hands down. It is optically superior in corner to corner sharpness and has almost no focus breathing. The Canon RF 50mm 1.8 is softer than the Nikon especially edge to edge and has significant focus breathing - making is a poor choice for video. To be fair, the Nikon lens is $300 more than the Canon version but then again the Z6 II is $500 less than the R6 so this is a moot point and I'd rather have great lenses. 2) Nikon's NEVER overheat in video - they may not put in gimmicky features - like beta versions of 8K that overheat etc., but whatever is in the camera works perfectly every time. 3) As far as AF tracking, I agree that Nikon is still in 3rd place to Sony and Canon respectively, but you must have been doing something wrong in your test because the Nikon is much better than the results you are getting. There is a small learning curve with Z system AF - so I am not surprised that you did not use it optimally not being well acquainted with the system. It is not quite as good as the Sony and Canon but it is very close - much closer than what your test showed - see Manny Ortiz's video comparing Eye AF of the Nikon, Canon and Sony and you will see that the difference is minimal - the Nikon actually does better in some of his tests than the Canon or Sony. Nikon's main failing in tracking AF at this point is distance to subject. The subject has to be closer on the Nikon before the system picks up the face/eye than on Canon and Sony but once this is taken care of the difference will be negligible and for portraiture the difference is already virtually irrelevant. It is clear that all three systems are very good - I just see a lot of people reviewing / comparing Nikons that don't really use them normally or don't really know how to use them optimally and thus give the public the wrong idea about their capabilities. As a final aside, it is pretty clear that the Sony is underexposing at any given ISO as compared to the Nikon and Canon - this is the reason why it is getting better results when 'overexposed' - not because it has better dynamic range - it is just less sensitive at any given ISO - this is why it looks the worst of the three (by a lot) when you underexpose. Thanks for the interesting video!

@PK-ql5en3 жыл бұрын
Well about those lenses this isn't quite true. Nikon's f4 zoom lenses are average at best and have a lot of software corrections going on. Sony-Zeiss f4 are tragic as well. However, Canon's f4 zooms are stellar. When we talk about f2.8 zooms most recent comparisons between Sigma 14-24 f2.8 for Sony and Nikon S 14-24 f2.8 showed that Sigma is actually sharper. So this whole argument where people are raving about Nikon lenses being superior is really a case by case discussion and definitely doesn't apply to all. People who claim some mythical superiority of Nikon glass have not used any of the other systems and their lenses.
@GeertDelmulle3 жыл бұрын
The Sony A7C has a “box focus area” mode, too (albeit rather large - it’s called “Zone”). And that helps to restrict what the Eye AF locks on to. The fact that the Nikon needs a restricted AF mode in order to work as well as the other systems in unrestricted mode, tells me that it is computationally the weakest of the bunch. So, it makes perfect sense for Nikon to put in 2 processors. And still there’s a performance difference. I’m sure better algorithms and more AI training helps, too.

Good review, but I think it's not accurate to say the R6 isn't good for video. That's like saying a car that only drives 300 miles on a tank is useless. People have different driving and video recording needs. I bet most people don't record for an hour straight and expect to keep going. 4k 60, and 10 bit 4k also put video from the other 2 cameras to shame.

If you are using a R6 for video for an hour, it would not be unexpected to switch to the backup R6 which would obviously continue for another hour. I suspect that anybody who can afford to use the R6 as a video camera, can afford a second camera.

To those sticking up for Nikon AF, this was a real AF stress test. A model walking through an ever changing (regarding lighting) scenario. She was in lighting that was backlit, harshly lit, had patchy lighting, was totally in shade etc. These are not normal lighting conditions. The test demonstrated how the cameras could deal with such harsh 'varying' conditions. In a normal controlled lighting environment, all cameras will do very well. As illustrated all over KZbin in side-by-side comparisons, Nikon still trails the pack in terms of AF tracking and AF consistency. It's getting better and better though. No point in making excuses because Nikon didn't live up to the others.

Thanks for the video. The comparisons were interesting, though the conclusions at each stage and overall didn't appear totally correct to me. ISO test for example, i couldn't find any visible grain or noise in Z6II and R6 photos at the zoom level you guys had in video for upto 3200 - 6400. But then again, noise and grain being palatable is a subjective matter. Image quality and dynamic range - seemed much better in Z6II than in R6. Sure it was close but the balance of color science appeared much gorgeous in Z6II than in Canon, and this one again is a subjective matter when testing at such close levels. AF - Z6II has very very good AF, both the speed of it and also the keeper rate, but it needs to be tweaked a bit based don situations. Same with R6 and Sony too. I know everyone is saying its good just not as better as Canon or Sony yet, but am not sure what we quantify as good. Higher keeper rate at fast burst is not exactly an only AF test criteria. The quality of AF as inferred from the photos, also depends on the sharpness of the lens involved and fringe sharpness of the pixels in AF box. Don't understand the point of such a harsh AF test with default AF settings. I for one wouldn't use default tracking AF in such a hard backlit setting, makes no sense to do so directly. Many wedding photographers do impressive work with Z6II in harsh beautiful backlit situations and many have done the same on Z6 too. Good video nevertheless, though I wouldn't advise viewers to base their buying decision on the views expressed in this video.

I don’t see the logic behind your view, as even the professional and good sense tell us that a flippy screen will help in difficult angle, like vertical photo or bottom to top photo. Or photo on top in concert. Most of the pro i know use only the flippy screen on recent camera like a7siii or a7c or r6 for fashion photography.
@lilnape26043 жыл бұрын
Flippy sceeen only has an advantage in portrait orientation. For me the few times I’m in a situation where I need to tilt the screen completely up or down in portrait isn’t worth the inconvenience of having to flip out the screen and rotate it around each time I want to tilt in landscape orientation which happens far more frequently. It’s slow. And I never need a screen facing me. Plus flippy screens don’t jive well with L brackets.

Hey guys I LOVE your reviews! Also seems you guys really enjoy what you do..and that makes a difference. In any case guess this review is a bit older now..but just wanted to suggest should you do another similar review?...you really ought to include or check out the Panasonic Lumix DC-S5! It's generally a tad under 2k with a fantastic 20-60 kit lens..not a constant F4 or anything but a great sharp lens 3.5-5.6. I know since this review, esp the Z6II have had some major firmware updates ESP for auto focus. I own the Z6II haha partially cause of a review you did with it's updated firmware..the eye auto red box thing on wide/face..and the image quality is SO good that any slight clunky-ness I find with the auto focus, is way forgiven once I see the files. That said, before I got the Pansonic S5 I had the Lumix DS1 for over a year. It was a great camera but for me WAY too large and heavy so sold it. Brings me back to the Pana S5..It's just a GREAT camera..IMO has the best ergonomics here well vs the Nikon and Sony..anyways. The files are also near incredible. I am not a video shooter very much..but every review I saw on the S5 as to video puts it near the top in this range. We know it's only contrast detect but with the latest firmware esp eye auto-focus I'd put it above my Nikon Z6II. The auto-focus on the S5 is actually VERY VERY good.. My only issue with the S5 is I shoot raw+jpeg. While jepg color is actually REALLY nice almost filmic...it always tends to have a tad too much magenta on Caucasian people's faces, pleasant but wish it was more neutral like Nikon files as to true color.. Funny..my wife is Asian and the S5 makes her skin color look just perfect. In any case as I say love your reviews..just thought I'd mention about the S5 to check out as it seems to always get lost behind, Nikon, Canon and Sony... and it's actually imo a hidden gem..esp price point vs the quality.

Thanks Xiong - that's very helpful, especially about the Af on the S5 compared to the Z6 II. Im a D750 user I now do a lot of social media hybrid work. The camera Ive chosen to upgrade to is the R6 because of easy of use on the AF. Also Canon have added video backup and slog 3. I looked at the S5 its seems a very good camera - but a few reviews mentioned it had not particularly good 1080p. I do still shoot in 1080p because of speed of turnaround on my work plus it 100 percent social media work. I asked on Panasonic forums if this was the case and everyone who commented confirmed this. I know that the R6 is the reverse and has very good 1080p. So its the R6 for me - why not the Z6 II as a Nikon shooter well....... Z6 II drawbacks AF mixed reviews no flip screen (vertical video - high low angles) for vertical video no video backup mixed media no log (future proof) no 10 bit (future proof) crop in 4K (future proof)

There is something terribly wrong with that lens on the Sony, is that a 7artisans 50/1.8? I don't recall you once mentioning the lack of detail or smeariness which probably made the Sony look worse than it is here. Soft lenses also tend to make High ISO images appear worse since the lack of any real detail (since the lens resolves poorly) makes the noise even more prominent.

Full support from multiple 3rd party vendors. Used market already established and decent used bodies for us poor folks. Just bought a lightly used A7ii, Tamron 35mm f2.8, Sony 50mm f1.8 (used) and a Sony 85mm f1.8 (used) for less than any of the bodies in this review. When I have the need or the $$ I'll upgrade the body to any 1 of 5+ amazing options - A7iii, A7C, A7Riv, A7Siii, A9ii plus other bodies in between. I was honestly torn about the Canon RP because Canon has made it very easy to use EF glass but the RP just didn't perform in image quality, no IBIS and more expensive than an A7ii, especially used. It's more advance AF was hard to say no to though.

The Sony has better highlight advantage but has a focus issues. It may be the lens used but you can see at 6:41 her foreheads, lips and eyeballs are tact sharp in both Canon and Nikon but has a smudge in the Sony. At 8:27 her eyeballs, cheek and lips tell the same story. Her face is out focused in Sony. Sony has also disadvantage in Color if you see the color arrows green, yellow, red and blue are very tidy in both the Canon and Nikon while the Sony has a dull look. At 8:56 the lamp and shadows tell the same story. The a7 series were undoubtedly sharper and has punch a lot of stars in its name but this a7c is something I want to avoid though it may be tempting because of the size. The price of this Sony as listed is not even in a entry affordable level though mostly they used to review together with the Z5 which is way cheaper. But it is a heck of energy to bring out this level of review that also make my decision more solid. Thanks for the review. This review is enjoyable to watch from HD onwards till 4k.

Also the image quality test is good that you do with a model portrait but id like to see a heavy 500% punch in to make it obvious and also i have noticed on one test you did it seemed like you put up an misfocus image of an eos r vs the r5 and r6 id like to see them all surely focused on the eye for the comp.
