What I love about Sanji's compliment to Pudding was that it wasn't a ploy; it was sincere. For the first time someone actually complimented her appearance and that shattered her world view as you said. Also, Luffy coming in by crashing through the wedding cake was priceless! Big Mom deserves to have her cake ruined for all the horrible things she's done XD

12:04 "What a beautiful eye!" And that absolutely breaking Pudding is one of my favorite character moments in One Piece. It is the perfect mix of something I never saw coming but something that was inevitable given what Oda told us about the characters going into it. Hard to predict yet very well set up. The mini backstory they drop as it happens lays it out more plainly for us but the important bits were all set up in text and subtext before the ceremony. We see that Big Mom is both neglectful towards, dispassionate about, and abusive of her children. Only giving the young and 'cute' ones a small amount of attention that never requires any real parenting. We get Pudding talking about having to hide her eye and her "true self".(Though in reality the flashback reveals her 'true' evil self is another mask, in reality she hasn't been able to discover her true self as she's consistently performing the roles expected of it to fit in with the family.) We also see how Praline and Chiffon had zero hesitation participating in a betraying the family and conspiring to assassinate their own mother, both of them stating that the men they married gave them their real families. They were both 'liberated' by a political marriage because even being matched with a random pirate gave them a glimpse of a healthier family life than they had ever experienced with Big Mom. Reinforcing how toxic the Big Mom family is as well as the ongoing theme of revealing what the children of Big Mom had to become and what they had to hide about themselves in order to protect themselves and each other. We further see by this point that Big Mom's commitment to diversity is more in line with a collection where the individuals such as her ex-husbands have no value beyond making her collection more complete, as curiosities, and as tools for furthering her goals. Leading to us seeing Pudding annoyed and distressed when Big Mom asks again if she's awakened her third eye, Big Mom's primary concern consistently being how useful Pudding can be to her, then Pudding looking pained but resigned as if she's very used to hearing it when Big Mom tells her that "even as your mother I can barely stand to look at [the third eye]". That resignation extending to Pudding never questioning the fact that the plan is literally pinned on the assumption that her third eye would disgust Sanji. She has internalized that her eye is disgusting and this rests alongside the two masks she wears. When Sanji cannot help but say "What a beautiful eye!" despite the straw hats own plans. It is not only the first time in her life someone has told her that the eye she's ashamed of was beautiful, not only the first time someone saw something of her true self and valued it beyond its utility, not only does she realize in that moment that Sanji's kindness was not a mask as she assumed but was always genuine, but it also was a statement completely incongruous with the malicious persona she crafted for and associated with her third eye. To her it must have felt like Sanji saw through to who she really was, the self she has never been allowed to be. Sanji was for Pudding what Bege was for Chiffon. Her pride as a performer broken as he sees through it, her world turned on its head, her inability to act against someone who was so genuinely kind to her, and her resentment towards him for preventing her from being useful to Big Mom and maybe gaining some acceptance. It was absolutely inevitable that her only reaction could be sobbing, falling to her knees, and cursing Sanji for the turmoil he awakened inside her. Jinbe!

That’s the flaw in Big Moms character. She collects these races like trophies to satisfy her tyrannical nature not because she wants a paradise. She is a murderous sociopath so of course she doesn’t raise her children with the values necessary to establish peace. She wants them to be her army. Whole Cake is a hellscape ran by one big psychotic pirate family, and this is juxtaposed beneath the sweet candy surface the island portrays itself as. Even Big Moms Devil fruit is a facade, with her making these whimsical Beauty and the Beast esq creatures that sing and dance all while preaching horrible evil things and worshipping her like a queen. Everything Big Mom does is to try and quench her ego which is as endless as her appetite

It’s interesting how big mom wanted a land where all races can come together where there was no discrimination based on race. And she’s right. There isn’t discrimination based on race. It’s ridicule for looking weird or different. Pudding is the only one of her kind in tot land, so she would be bullied for looking weird. But there are plenty of fishmen, long leg, long arm, long neck, minks, etc around. But she is one of if not the only exception to this. People can still not like pudding, but you can’t deny how well written she is. She was ridiculed in the only place where you would expect nobody to care what you look like. On top of the fact that big mom herself even doesn’t like your appearance. She’s crazy for the most part because of the ridicule from the other kids and big mom herself.

The older siblings, considering a bit of a spoiler. Big Mom’s negligence toward her children has always been part of who she is. While totoland kingdom is located where her life as a pirate began, she spent much of her twenties at sea, probably carrying her children as mere burdens to those who shared her crew. So, they had to take care of each other. Once Big Mom established herself as an Emperor, moving past what happened in that incident, she began her goal of gathering all races and having them in her kingdom. At this point, the older children were already active members of the crew, while the younger ones were essentially churned out as replacements, one after the other, only to be left in the kingdom to fend for themselves once they reached the age Big Mom no longer considered them cute (judging by how she treated that kunoichi, probably around 10 years old).

So about Pudding there are two things that need to be said, 1) She is only 16 so technically she is still a child not an adult so therefore shouldn’t you empathize with how she is forced to act towards others now because she is still a child, now One Piece is a different world from our own so who knows what age is considered adulthood (speaking from a mental maturity perspective) but that leads to 2) even if she was an adult all the abuse she has had shaped her definition of morality so how is she supposed to realize at any age what she is doing is wrong when she is surrounded by it her whole life, is it just supposed to randomly click one day. It’s easy to say your an adult act like it but a person’s past can be very different from your own and things that are obvious to healthy people may not be as clear. Pudding does do bad things but at the same time she is not Lola she is a different person and her circumstances never caused her to have the same revelation. The real thing is when she finally realizes how she was acting was wrong it feels bad about it then she has successfully changed and has the correct morals and broke her habit. I just thought it was wrong to blame her just because she “is an adult”

Truly one of my favorite themes about this arc is how Sanji and Pudding mirror each other. Both grew into a family with a lot of emotional/physical abuse that shaped them into who they were but because Sanji had good support from his mom/Reiju, he was able to escape and find a new home with Zeff. Pudding suffered alone (like most of the children that stay there) and broke under the expectations of her family. Sanji being the one to show her genuine kindness and admiration for what her family mocks about her, she can't help but break down. It's probably one of the only times someone has been kind to her about her third eye. Even after trying to kill him, Sanji carried her away from the falling cake. I love this arc so much.

I do like how Katakuri's easily OP ability is balanced. He can see into the future, but only a little and only ONE version of it. He sees that the priest fails to shoot Sanji and acts upon it, but he doesn't know if he'll succeed. He can read you all he wants, but he has to still keep up. Luffy promised a funny entrance and he really delivered. Big Mom's plot was doomed to have hiccups, but it's funny how it was almost doomed to fail simply because it hinged on Pudding's third eye being treated with scorn from Sanji of all people. Man. What kind of balls do you gotta have to willingly pick on Big Mom's daughter like that? Pudding is one of the younger ones too, so it isn't just Mama herself you gotta worry about. Any of her older siblings catching wind of this would be a death sentence.

This might be the perfect time to say: Katakuri's future sight is REACTIVE because taking action will inherently change the future. Basically, Katakuri has a 5-second window to choose to either attempt to stop something from happening or time a perfect counter after it happens. So, for example, if he wants to avoid being attacked, he can: A) make a preemptive move to stop his enemy from launching the attack at all, or B) Wait for the perfect time to dodge/block( IF that's possible). He cannot do: C) Immediately back away from where the attack would land. Because doing so, he has effectively altered the very future he saw, and now the enemy will launch their attack in a different angle (since Katakuri moved prematurely).

Brook wasn't just disguised as any generic looking person. He was disguised using Luffy's face. It was probably an attempt to blend in with the animals disguised as Luffy to get close to the picture. Luffy was the distraction but he was not the hero that breaks the picture, it was incredibly smart to send in someone like Brook as a backup. Although I don't see why they didn't just force Brulee to make Brook look like a perfect Luffy clone instead as that would have been the only thing they could do better. Since Brulee's ability can copy someone's appearance and devil fruit abilities maybe she can't use it on someone who is already a devil fruit user. We just don't know the full limits of her abilities.

Sanji's whole thing with pudding is something that I actually had the reverse happened to me. I'm a completely blind person and growing up I just treated people like how I wanted to be treated so like normal people. And my parents definitely didn't shy away of telling me there will be people who want to take advantage of you, or we just view as we even if you try to let them know about you. Point is I've had multiple people of various genders and orientations confess they develop feelings for me and that is something I very much treasure like my life and the life of my family members. Whether they were real love confessions or not it's very hard to find people especially today who are them genuine selves and will just treat you the same and kind without expecting anything.
