Its time for the people to realize that Ethiopian opal quality grades exist, Mine run, A, AA , AAA. The stuff you have seen in piles at your annual gem show are are used to make dop sticks on this channel. Always the highest quality with this company never cracks never crazes. 3 figure kilos? add another zero. Buy it and try it, then try to deny it you simply cannot. The most underrated Gem out there and its going to change.

I thought ethiopal opal was known for cracking when it dries out? That probably has to do with its porous nature, while the quality of opal is judged by its appearance. having bright vivid colors on an ethiopian opal won't make it any less likely to crack. These aren't man made products and calling them "high quality" can't alter their inherent properties.

I'd REALLY recommand using two pieces of wood with a nice layer of semi-soft rubber instead of your fingers when cutting a stone so close to the edge.. nobody never had any accident like that until their first time, but when you cut of a part of your finger, or just injured nerval tissue, also at the very first time - trust me you'll miss the part for quite a long time.

cant help but think this one would have been even nicer with a nice high dome, so much material to work with. Lose some weight with dome yes, but gain viewing angle/face area and the color really rolls all the way over.

Ethiopian hydrophane opals are occasionally impregnated with polymers to reduce porosity and increase stability. Though the practice of stabilisation in these opals isn't currently widespread, it's definitely something to keep an eye out for.

@@shawnstatzer95if it’s Ethiopian then it needs to be kept moist or it will crack if it dries out too much. I sort of agree with you it does seem to not be an Australian Nobby with that distinctive white witches hat. Generally Australia has more white seam opal and not black. This is black seam opal and that’s an uncommon thing in Australia.

Very nice gemstone! I love cutting Ethiopian and sometimes Australian ( when I can afford it). It’s incredibly rare to find a black one that large, you did a great job. I’ve cut a few chocolate/coffee colored ones (not the Shewa ones) and I like them, but not black like yours. Here’s looking forward to more cool opal videos!
