Excellent! Saw a video where Kenny Werner did a similar thing. He had students call out random bass notes that he used to re-harmonize "My Romance" It showed me that anything is possible with good inner voice leading.

I have a question: When you do the exercise, are you thinking about each chord first, then find the voicing really fast? Or are you first coming up with chord shapes that you're used to (that fall naturally under your fingers, knowing that they form valid voicings) and identify the chord after? And do you actually identify each chord at all?
@JeremySiskind2 жыл бұрын
Hi Romain - i like your question! I think it's more the latter than the former (Think about hand shape versus thinking about chord symbols).

Such a great exercise, I’ve been having lots of fun with this - thanks Jeremy (PS I got your book👍) I have a big question, I can harmonize most notes several ways but I always struggle very much when the bass note and melody note make an interval of b9 - there seems to be only the option of dominant7b9, which usually sounds kind of bad with a strong melody and weird bass note (rather than the other way around). Any advice/suggestions to navigate those, or do we treat it just as a passing chord and move through it? (That sometimes works but not if it happens on the last note of a phrase😂). It happened here at the end of your first descending bass semitones example, and I can’t see what you did (definitely some kind of weird B chord with a C in the melody). Any tips most gratefully appreciated!!
@JeremySiskind2 жыл бұрын
Wow, great question! I think it depends on context. Yes, I do think that dominant seventh flat ninth is a great way to go. It could also be useful to think in slash chords, like C/B or Ab/B (similar to a B7(b9), I know) or F/B (also similar), or G triad add4. You're right, though the dominant seventh flat ninth is going to be the bread and butter in those situations.
@mrpsoul2 жыл бұрын
@@JeremySiskind thanks so much for the reply! I will explore the slash chord idea too :-) . My other often tricky one is interval flat 6 (eg melody Ab over bass note C). Again, the dom7 (this time b13 and b9) seems the easiest in most situations, but I find sometimes thinking of inversions eg Ab Major in first inversion. You’re right that it always depends on context! I find the first inversion sometimes comes under my fingers more quickly but I don’t know a good colorful way to voice it - often sounds a bit bland. Maybe add9 would help? Anyway as always, thanks for the inspiration and for taking time to respond on KZbin to random strangers like me! ;-) Cheers, Patrick

Jeremy you are a chord enciclopedia but I am not, do you have an easier version of this game for us beginner jazz pianists?
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
Hi Francesco, instead of thinking of a different version of the game, I would start very slowly/out of time or write out the chords if you have to. Then you can work up towards improvising the harmonies in this style.

Jeremy, what software did you use to write and finalize your book in?

Does the book "Playing jazz piano solo" have piano techniques? or is it a series of transcriptions ?

It’s all instructional - not transcriptions or pieces. It teaches you how to form your own solo piano arrangements in a variety of styles.

are these chords still functional in these changes?
@JeremySiskind3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Gary! I probably wouldn't call them functional in any traditional sense. The point of the exercise is just to get really fast at finding chords given a specific bass and melody. I think you can worry about function a little later.

You are a great pianist but not so good in explaining. You just assume we know 70% of the ideas in your head. It would be nice to take your time and just go through the mechanics bit by bit. You went a head playing multiple different chords on your right hand right off the bat. Well. Thanks for the videos anyways.
