Really enjoy the new shortened versions, helps to catch up with your videos any time of day, no matter how busy a day is. Longer version once in a while will come in handy whenever we need more info. Keep up the great work.

Thanks, Ryky. I must say that I prefer the 10-12 minute videos. Very rarely will I ever have more time than that to sit down and watch/enjoy a longer video.

Your videos are terrific. I prefer the longer more comprehensive ones when they have time indexes with them. It provides product spelling and it's easy to find or go back and review things a second time. With all the content together, I don't have to remember which video has what in it, and bounce from one to another to find something a second time. Your long one on choosing a whetstone is incredibly good.

I prefer this shorter, bite size format! :) The long one last year was great but if you wanted to go back to a specific section I was a bit tricky to find it. Thumbs up for this one 👍

Thank you very much for all your videos, Ryky. I have just begun learning how to sharpen knives properly and of all the videos I have viewed over the past few months, yours has been be far the most informative and educational. (I am a retired teacher in San Diego so I'm sensitive to those things.) Because of your video tour of the Yaxell factory in Japan I was inspired to purchase some decent knives for my wife and daughters. (My wife's mother is Japanese and she was born in Yakosuka). I got two of the Yaxell Kiritsuke Tsuchimon 8" and one Yaxell Ran 8" Chef's knife. My only worry is that I will not be able to maintain the sharpness on them. I will just have to practice, practice, practice. You should be congratulated on your decision to be a full-time Dad and You-Tuber, because the sharpening enthusiasts are now much better with you guiding us along the way. I do have a question: one of my first purchases was a set of combination water stones, 400/1000 and 3000/8000 with an angle guide. I haven't had the gumption to go free-hand yet and by using the angle guide I developed a sway-back in my 400 stone. Is there any way to bring it back to level, or do I just cross it off for lack of experience and start with a new one? Thank you.

I enjoy your videos Ricki, the shorter format works for me. I use the Norton Utility file (120 grit I think) for my coarse stone for knives, and also for axes, lawn mower blades etc. I may try one of the stones in this video for my knives.

Great video, and full of helpful information! Even for those of us who have been DIY'ers for a long time, it's nice (once in a while) to have a place to catch up on "what's out there today"...(lolz) I (personally) find these shorter videos to be a better organized format... When I just want to find something about (say) medium grit stones... I don't really want or have the time to spend wading through or "scrubbing" a two-hour video for it. AND don't get me wrong, I could sit through a "leisurely lecture" on sharpening, honing, grits, techniques... and on and on till YOU are three shades of blue and plaid in the face, WHEN it comes to leisure. SO there's probably still a nice niche for those vid's too... Might consider (just an alternative)... Arranging to do the shorter works as PART of the larger "whole"... It's a bit more work, maybe, but all that work will be primarily in editing... Obviously, YOUR choice to use it now or later... or just think about it... But basically, script and shoot for the Larger (2-hour) presentation... AND then find "breaking points" as you edit for releasing the "short versions" first in a series... Hell, even cut out parts between the "short versions" that can then be put in as segues for the "scene to scene" mix in the Long Version... AND release the Long (full?) version of the whole lecture on a regular schedule for those who are "real fans" and want or have the time for "the deep dive"... Extra footage can be an attractive reason for going "full version", too... AND everyone gets what they're looking for. ;o)

Thanks, Ryky, good video. Like so many here, I like the shorter videos supplemented by the longer when a more complex topic is on the table. As I'm still struggling with angle and pressure to get a good burr (e.g. my old sabatier [k] from cooking school 45 years ago.) an occasional longer "basics" video would be helpful. One never has enough of a grasp of the basics -- that's why pro ballplayers take infield practice every day!

Hey Ryky! Thanks for the great content as always. I think the shorter videos are better, because the content is the same (right?), and it makes it easier as a viewer to navigate to what you want to hear about. with the long-form 2017 video, it took a little bit of time to get to the section I wanted to.

Have you had any experience with DMT diamond plate coarse "stones?" I've got some no name thin plates 180, 250 , and 320 that are just ok. The 120 grit seems hard to find and when you do..ouch! Very pricey. Interested in seeing a video where you test the coarse plates vs coarse stones. Thanks for your time. 😃

James Barisitz: My experience is with the DMT Coarse (325 grit). I purchased it years ago to flatten my whetstones, for which it works pretty well, although sometimes awkward. When used with knives, they are a bit fragile… if you use too much pressure, the diamonds can come off the surface. I've definitely got some smoother spots on mine. 😕 Hope that helps.

Like the shorter format ! OF course if some topic is rly demanding ill watch longer videos but in general shorter are good. And even when topic is big u can always split it to some subtopics and post as separate videos ;d And i think it would be super-duper usefull if u could manage splitting playlists to smaller ones when one can easily find things to watch cause im watching your channel for some time but still got a lot of unwatched videos and i struggle to manage when and what i want. Especially i think it would be usefull since your videos are not just fun videos but ppl learn from them a lot and your old videos should be in order to immediately allow one to start learning from scratch :) Make it easy for newcomers :)

the shapton pro 120 is literally one of the slowest wearing ultra course stones on the market. shows how much this guy knows or how accurate his very limited and almost entirely opinion based information is. Like what are you even talking about man? Any common SIC stone like say the Naniwa 220 or the Sigma 240 or even a Norton 220, they all wear a lot faster than the shapton pro 120. The shapton pro 220 and 320 which are SIC like those other stones I named wear fast as well. The 120 is a hard asf white alumina stone that wears extremely slowly and is extremely hard. Clueless bogus stuff.

what does a "snappy feel" even mean? Nothing. thats what. He doesn't give ANY actual useful information, it's all just aimless ranting nonsense. What kind of abrasive does it use? What is the size of the abrasive? The distribution of gritis? What kind of binding does it use? How hard are the stones? How friable are the stones? How much grit do they release? How quickly do they wear? How much water does it absorb? Does it hold water decently or does it get dry fast? etc. You tell anyone a few of these cold hard things and they can figure out by themselves what it "feels like."
