I live in San Diego, but I like to travel. These caves are in a variety of locations... Mexico, Belize, pacific northwest, and all over the southwest. I also took some nice footage from last years NSS convention in West Virginia, but that'll be in my next video.

Rob, in which caves/locations did you see the human remains, and the sculpture of the face? Thanks, N

I've never seen or heard of that specifically. However in some caves, particularly pits, sticks/logs/etc can wash down from the surface. Certain types of bacteria will grow on organic matter without light and release carbon dioxide gas which is heavier than oxygen. If the air is very still, the CO2 will sink and form a layer which will asphyxiate and kill you. It's good to be able to recognize the conditions that produce this effect (poor airflow, pit entrance, organic surface debris) so you can be conscious of the danger. Safest option is to stay out, but you can also test for bad air with a lighter. If you can't produce a flame, or you suddenly feel dizzy, sleepy, or lightheaded, you should probably get the hell outta there.
@robbspangler8 жыл бұрын
That being said, I think CO2 Asphyxia is pretty rare. I'm typically much more concerned about falling, being struck by rocks dislodged by cavers above me, hypothermia, and getting trapped in a squeeze, in approximately that order. If you read the statistics, those are the things that usually kill people.
