Wow you talking about why you find extreme horror comforting is so validating, this year was my first year reading extreme horror and it is so frustrating and alienating the fact that I can’t rly discuss all my new favorite books with anyone in my life because they think I’m insane for reading these. I love love love the way you described why extreme horror is a comforting coping mechanism. It also for me is the only type of book that I won’t immediately recognize the cliche patterns and predict the entire story, extreme horror never fails to surprise me which is what I am always looking for in a horror book or movie. The overall horror thriller genre can become so stereotypical and copy and paste and extreme horror is the only place I can come to for reals spooks and shocks 😂

People who don’t like extreme horror and disturbing media are overthinking why people like that sort of stuff. I find extreme horror very cathartic. I’ve always been very afraid of the world. Just in its entirety. Facing up to the worst possible things that could happen to you is a coping mechanism. It’s good to know some people get it. I read more of it the more stressed out or depressed I am.

I am the same way, my biggest fear ever is pain and more specifically being tortured which is a huge reason why I find extreme horror so comforting since I feel like I'm facing my fear and also educating myself on the reality of these situations as a way to cope. People tend to look at the material and immedietley assume we want to do the things being done on the pages which i think is so ridiculous. Like who puts down the hunger games and is like "wow I think we should make some teenagers fight to the death" that is such a wild double standard@@noheroes8626

@ReadingWithMeg I've only read the first one, The Thirteenth Koyote, but mind=blown! I wouldn't say it's his most disturbing one though, but plenty of brutal gore and everything else we love about Triana😀

Im on the fence about triana. I loved gone to see the river man but hated the sequel and then full brutal left a bad taste in my mouth (and not just in terms of it being extreme horror - i found the book to be boring and then a bit in the end to be a little racist) - i definitely need to give his works a few more chances before i arrive to a conclusion on him as an author.

I definitely want to read more of Wrath James White. I read his book Master of Pain and I could not stop raving about it. Him and Kristopher Triana are becoming my new go-tos for extreme horror/splatterpunk

Great list. Love Burner, His Pain, and Broken Dolls: Deliverance. I think my fave extreme horror book of the year was What Good Men Do, Jonathan Butcher's sequel to his amazing What Good Girls Do. It's just as brutal and just as moving as the first book. Also loved a bunch of Judith Sonnet books, too many to name, but They Want Us Gone was definitely up there. Oh, and there was one about a guy who takes vengeance on animal abusers, but I can't remember title/author right now. I know it was part of a series.

@@ReadingWithMeg hmmm let me see. Camp Blaze is very close to Friday the 13th but still a fun read. The Groomer and Into the Wolves Den were terrifying as a parent, but I couldn’t stop reading😬. Lovesick was sooo gross but I also couldn’t stop reading. Am I Beautiful and The Abuse of Ashley Collins were really good with crazy endings. I wanted to like the Girl in the Attic but the ending messed it up for me as it went off the rails for me a bit.
