Try a longer bit of rope with a big stopper knot after the eye, so you don’t have to thread it through the eye every time. You can put the loop of rope over the head and lock it off a lot easier

Good idea. Not sure that one would get round that big lads head! Would need to be quite long to get clear of horns too. 👍

Use to refer to them as jamming cleats back in my sailing days.

Clam cleat. Widely used on sail boats to hold lines at a particular point of sail trim or tension. Would work better single for handed operation if the rope was longer with a stop knot part way to allow a big enough loop to slip over the horns, but keep the working end captive within the fairlead so you don't have to keep threading it back through to make it off.

The thing that holds the rope is a cam cleat from a yacht.

That’s it. I knew it would have a proper name, not quite so glamorous as a yacht though. 😂

Battery operated shears will help if/when flock gets bigger. Sandi Brock from Sheepishly Me swears by them. Samson was very well behaved! Cheers

We do for shearing unless you mean hoof trimmers that are powered?
@andie1769

@@diyfarm yes, hoof trimmers. Have little battery pack that straps to your belt with a cable that runs to the hoof trimmers. Very cool and saves your hand from cramping.

What breed sheep are you running Tim? Another great video. I have purchased 3 Boer goats a few months back thanks to watching your channel. I’m not picking up 4 Zwartble sheep tomorrow to join the small holding. 👍

Just Lleyns now. Had Southdowns but decided to focus on the Lleyns. Good to hear you are building the farm family! 😀

They have a concrete hard standing which can help but in summer they are on softer ground more.

It strikes me that the loop you have to tuck the rope through before you cleat it would be better if it was a hook that you easily flick the rope behind before you cleat it. Much easier to do one-handed when wrestling a 100kg lad like Samson.

The guidance for sheep has changed they say not to cut sheep's feet unless there is a problem I've got a 140kg ram and he would take the fence with him 😂
@diyfarm
@diyfarm Жыл бұрын
Yes, at least that’s one less job. We don’t do sheep unless there is a problem, usually doesn’t require anything with the hooves so more the goats. Was only really checking over the ram to give him the all clear for his big job next month.

Quite agree Nick , when I was a lad routine hoof trimming was something of an obsession among shepherds. I think it’s a case of the more you do the more you HAVE to do as I think all this trimming encourages Shelly hoof .
