If you're looking for a fast charger for you large 12v lithium batteries for RVs, campers, and van life check out the Victron Blue Smart IP65 15A Charger. It's waterproof, heavy duty and works great:
amzn.to/3hyFZlU
In this video, I review the Victron charger and show how I use it to charge my ExpertPower 12V 100Ah Lithium LiFePO4 Deep Cycle Rechargeable Battery but this would work just as well with a Battleborn, Renogy, or any other Lithium Ion or LiFePO4 battery

Yet another great video my friend! I love how you do the cinematic shots of the devices. The Victron IP65 15A is an excellent charger - very versatile, and its nice to see the status over BlueTooth with the VictronConnect app. It's too bad we can't use this to act as a power supply to the Yeti 1000 - the Output Voltage only goes to 14.70V maximum, whereas the Yeti minimum is 15V. I use this charger in my Sprinter van connected to my Yeti 1000 110V outlet. My Yeti 1000 will charge my Sprinter battery while I'm using my Espar D2 heater so that I don't fully drain my starter battery when we are out camping. Then when we drive, we use the Victron Orion DC-DC charger 12/24-15A to charge the Yeti 1000 back up again. The IP65 and the Victron Orion DC-DC chargers are game changers with the GZ Yeti's!

Went and got one today after watching your video. Very happy with my purchase. I'm charging a 110ah leisure battery for a Window cleaning unit. Split charge relay wasn't working out for me at all. Hopefully this sorts out my problem. I have mounted it in the van permanently and planning on overnight charging. App is brilliant, although I have to go to the window to get close to the van, but it keeps me updated without going outside. 👍 Thanks Todd. Greetings from Ireland

I've had this charger for a few months now. I initially bought it to charge my Goal Zero (AGM) Tank without connecting the tank to my Yeti 3000 & Link. I found the charging information provded by the phone app to be much more informative than the 4 bars on the link. One thing I found impressive is the charger's ability to bring back a SEVERELY depleted battery, like a seriously dead battery. From the manual "Recovery function The blue smart charger range will attempt to recharge a severely discharged battery (even down to 0V) with low current and then resume normal charging once the battery voltage has risen sufficiently - many other chargers will not recognise a battery in this state."

Hi Todd, Just something to be aware of. Charging profiles for Li-Ion and LiFePO4 are slightly different. Most likely you will need to create a custom profile for the charger. There are some posts about this in the Victron Community Forum. For the reasons of safety and battery life longevity, it would be best to change some settings.

Nice Review Todd! I was using a NOCO Genius 10 to charge a 100 ah Battleborn Battery. Because I was testing out a new shunt (AiLi) I did a discharge capacity test on the Battleborn and once it was fully depleted, set the shunt to zero and started to charge with the “Genius”. I observed that it never went into Bulk or absorption modes and very slowly charged the battery at a curious 1.43 amps. The charger turned off several times and never could charge more than 78 ah. I tested the NOCO 10 with a second Battleborn battery that was 90% SOC and saw the same 1.43 amps without going into absorption mode, voltage…rarely went above 13.4. So, I will return it for evaluation, per NOCO’s 3 year warranty. I am thinking of getting the Victron you enthusiastically endorse! Did you observe the charge cycle to see what the amp charge rate looked like? Thanks Again.
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my NOCO never worked well with my LFP battery and was so slow. I know for a fact this Victron shifts to bulk mode for most of the cycle and it has handy lights on the unit and the app to monitor it’s charging. Mind is still working great - it’s built like a (waterproof) tank

I have a ReBel 100AH Lifepo4 battery. I see lots of people say use a 10 plus amp charger for them. But some say use a lower amp charger to extend the battery longevity. I have a 4 amp charger for now till I get a bigger amp charger. My question is that, should I go low and slow ( 12v 7amp ) or high and fast ( 12v 15 amp), or in between ( 12v 10amp ).
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much of a rush you’re in but charging fast dies degrade the cells. I think less than 0.2C (20% of capacity) for charging or discharging is very easy on a battery so the 10-15A amp is totally safe. The eco flow units charge at 0.6C or faster.

HI, just watched your video twice just to make sure I got it... and ordered the Victron charger. Question though...SETTING up the question: I have a Goal Zero Yeti 1000 that this will be charging. However, I use it in my camper van and doubt that where ever I go that there will be an outlet for me to plug into... BUT the Yeti 1000 does have 110-120 AC... AND I do have a Yeti Link that will draw power when my van is running (plus 200W Boulder solar panels). QUESTION: Can I plug in the Victron into the Yeti AC, and then have the external LiFePo connected via the 12v car plug into the input of the Yeti using the Goal Zero 12v adapter? (Sorry that was sooo long)
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Yes, you can connect the Victron to the AC on the Yeti and trickle charge the Yeti from the battery when needed via the car charger. There will some losses because you’re convert to AC then back to DC but seems you have plenty of power. I might suggest that you don’t leave these always connected because it seems like it would be a circular thing with the yeti charging the battery and the yeti pulling power from the battery to replace that energy so it could self discharge faster than ideal. I’d plug in the external battery if the yeti is running low to keep things going a bit longer

Yes, you can connect this to the AC output of the 1500X to charge an external battery, that's what I use it for. I haven't measured the actual power draw but I'd guess it pulls around 200w-250w when in bulk charge mode.

Another excellent video. I have a question about the Victron Energy M8 Eyelet Indicator for Blue Smart IP65 (30 amp ATO Fuse). The description on Amazon states: "Suitable for 12-Volt lead acid batteries only (flooded, GEL, AGM). Not suitable for Lithium". Did this item work for you while recharging the Lithium battery ? Thanks. I emailed Victron and asked them for an explanation. Their replay to me for why the M8 Eyelet is not compatible with Lithium Batteries was: "As a lithium battery doesn’t have a voltage which indicates its soc (State of Charge?) as a lead acid does." What?
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 2 жыл бұрын
Ah, I see. So that’s an fancier eyelet connector with a SOC indicator. The one that ships with the unit is a simpler one with a fuse only. I think the issue is that indicator is calibrated for lead acid batteries and lithium ones have a different discharge curve that’s much flatter - it stays at a steady voltage for a long time then drops off while a lead acid battery starts drooping all the way through so they can use that to roughly indicate the % full. The chart on this page will help: www.thepilotgroup.co.uk/lithium-ion-battery-vs-lead-acid-battery/

Question for anyone. I plan to get two 100 Ah lithium batteries for my camper and wire them in parallel. I realize that this will take twice as long to charge, however when at home that is no issue, and my 4000 watts of generator power or 300 watts of solar should keep them charged unless it will overload the IP 65 when I get home to recharge. My belief is that it will just pump out it's normal 15 amps until they are charged with no issues.

I assume you're replacing the AGM with lithium, not vice versa but in any case you'll want a larger charger than this one. If you have 4x100ah = 400ah, you'd 27 hours to charge that with a 15A charger like this. Just divide the total Ah by the charger's output to figure out charge time.

When I was looking at LARGE (500 amp) 12v lithium batteries they seem to have their controllers built in so you could charge them with an automotive alternator or standard auto 10-15amp charger. Pulling the trigger to buy one for my RV is on my To-Do List. The one I was looking at was $500.00 I do like THIS charger though. It's bigger than the one i have but will it also do an equalization charge of led/acid batteries?
@uhjyuff2095
@uhjyuff2095 3 жыл бұрын
It is true Lithium batteries, such as in this video, come with a BMS device to protect the battery from either over charging or over discharging. But, it is better to have a charger that can correctly charge the lithium battery without triggering the bms inside or charge the lithium battery too fast like a high output alternator. Always refer to the battery manufacture's recommended charging instructions.

How is 15A fast charging? I mean isn't fast supposed to be something like charging the battery from zero to 100 within an hour? I charge my lead acid 230Ah @30amps, takes a few hours to charge to full capacity.
@todd.parker
@todd.parker 2 жыл бұрын
We’ll, it’s all relative. Your battery is twice as large as mine and your charger is twice as fast so we both charge at the same speed. At the time, we weren’t used to Ecoflow 2,000w charging speeds. I was cobbling together 60w chargers for my Goal Zero
@petsonly4068

@@todd.parker makes sense but they are charging EVs at 360kW now. I wouldn't call mine fast charging as lead acid batteries don't like fast charging. As per manufacturer's instructions i should be charging it at 23 Amps but my mpp inverter has 10,20,30,40-80 amps settings and 30 amps seem great for the size of batteries I have for my solar. LFPs are taxed heavily in Pakistan and we have to rely on local lead acid batteries.
