I can never stop listening to “Once Upon a time in Hollywood”. It is a stone cold Time Machine to the summer of 1969. And that’s because QT took an actual reel to reel recording of the L.A. radio station that a fellow nerd had recorded in the summer of 1969. Everything, the actual song audio, the local commercials, everything in the soundtrack is as it was in 1969. It’s the greatest example of QT’s obsession with the small details.

I admire Matt’s inclusion of Dumb & Dumber here. The Farrelly brothers’ films are chock full of great songs and they really capture the time period they came out in. Not saying they’re always full of the most iconic songs but that Dumb & Dumber soundtrack does ooze a feeling of the 90’s

Love the Natural Born Killers soundtrack and all Tarantino related ones. I've always found humour in the weird kind of meta criss-cross of the Boogie Nights soundtrack with Mark Wahlberg singing "The Touch". The song was originally sung by Stan Bush for the animated “The Transformers: The Movie” released in 1986. Not only is the artists’ name very apt for a “Boogie Nights” character alias, but Mark Wahlberg then goes on to star in the later live action Transformers movies! If only he was credited as Dirk Diggler in it! As a lifelong Transformers fan, I still have a nostalgic childhood glow for the song!😀

@burninator19833 ай бұрын
@@russceasetheruss5360 that's cool. Track 14, "High Wire Escape Artist" is their song on that soundtrack. I personally enjoy Daredevil, both the theatrical and the superior director's cut, but admit that it's one of those occasions where the soundtrack is better than the actual movie.

@russceasetheruss53602 ай бұрын
I promise, they are phenomenal soundtracks in every sense of the word... One caveat, on Vol. 1, there is one song that isn't from the era and is a remake. "Where is the Love" is originally by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway, where on the soundtrack it's a 90s version. Admittedly it's pretty good though, and for years I was only aware of this version and not the original. If you're familiar with Mary J. Blige's version of "Sweet Thing" compared to Rufus/Chaka Khan's, it's like that, where it's almost a beat for beat cover only updated by decade.

Love your show, guys! You are both around my age, so I wholeheartedly agree with your soundtrack choices. However, do we have bias because of our specific age? All these soundtracks came out within a 5 year period and it very much correlates with our ‘coming of age.’ Do you have any older or younger friends that you could bring in to give their opinions on best soundtracks…one coming of age in the early 80’s and one coming of age in the early or late 2000’s? That could be quite eye opening and may turn us on to some new options. Thanks!
@russceasetheruss53603 ай бұрын
We did have a discussion that was edited out about this... and while our ages are an inescapable factor, the 90s really were the pinnacle of soundtracks (commercially). They figured out they could promote new artists, resell catalog hits, etc. without completely relying on familiarity with the movie. Mtv arguably being at its peak also helped promote them better, as they're a channel focusing on music with visuals. For instance, more people love Kiss From a Rose than have actually sat down and watched Batman Forever from beginning to end. Where in Saturday Night Fever's case, most people associate Staying Alive with Travolta walking down the street.

Respectfully, I need this explained... I've come to believe it's the cover of "People Are Strange" that puts me off entirely (I was a kid who was obsessed with The Doors), but I just don't see this as being classic. Cry Little Sister is iconic, but the soundtrack as a whole? As someone who grew up on the movie, aside from the Doors cover, Cry Little Sister & Walk This Way being used, I can't even remember any other songs in it. I do say all this respectfully, I'm clearly in the minority here...
