And the final season 1 plot twist because SPOILEEEEEEEEEEEEEER : They were not even looking at each other in the eye, dammit ! Personally I have really enjoyed the first episode of ,,Samurai Champloo". Firstly each member of the cast is introduced to us individually then one by one they meeting each other. And even thought they firstly fight each other in a fantastically drown by the 2004 standards action scene, later in the same episode they are already forced by the circumstances to fight back to back. Also Jin being old fashioned samurai and Mugen being more like modern times bad - ass really makes a chemistry between them.

I kinda really like this format and wish to see more like this ^^ Personally I don't usually get hooked on a show up until like 5 episodes in or in some cases even 10 or more (FMAB for example, which is still one of my favorites), but there are a few anime with an outstanding first episode that had me immediately craving for more, just to cover the ones you didn't talk about: "Kyousougiga" - all around a really great show about family that deserves a bit more attention than it gets "Darling in the Franxx" - well, we all know how THAT turned out in the end but still I can't get that first episode out of my head, had me hyped from the beginning and got me to enjoy most of the show "Zetsuen no Tempest" - maybe you could do a review for that one because it is such an amazing show, especially in its entire first arc, but is generally never talked about anywhere I go, a truly hidden gem some might say, that absolutely deserves way more recognition than it currently has. Seriously someone NEEDS to talk about it "Kanata no Astra" - the whole show has left me in awe to be honest, from the cold open to the characters, the story, the twists, one of the best anime of 2019 easily "Zankyou no Terror" - personally my favorite start to a TV show, ever. There is no other that had me completely hooked as fast as this one, before the opening, within less than 3 minutes, just because of the amazingly high prooduction value the show had, being Mappa's first original product. Sadly for me after ~5 episodes, the show takes a huge nosedive in quality nad except for 2-3 scenes isn't enjoyable for me anymore, BUT that'll never stop me from recommending it just for the amazing start and the gorgeous visuals and incredible OST

The first episode of Aldnoah Zero is the best for me. The introduction to the conflict that is brewing between Mars and Earth and the wait as to who will pull the trigger first until all hell broke out as it happened all in one episode left me questioning WTF just happened and what are they gonna do next? I feel like focusing so hard on the twist misses the point of The Promised Neverland's first episode a little, and it doesn't really speak to what was the most compelling first episode experience I've personally had in any show. What gives TPN its unique hook isn't the twist in the first episode. It's how the first episode sets the emotional stakes for the rest of the story. ***EP 1 SPOILERS (and a wall of text) AHEAD*** The series begins by illustrating an average day in what is essentially the perfect childhood. We're shown the depth of love and care they receive from their parental figure, their rigorous but forgiving learning environment, the intricacies and strength of the children's relationships, and their absolute freedom to play and grow. Each scene also pulls in bits of dialogue and little human moments, so we get to see the individualities, quirks, strengths and weaknesses of each of the children. It takes its time, so we become invested in the characters, their hopes and dreams, and their friendships. What makes the erie unease woven into that picture so meaningful is that we start to understand the children and how they see the world. It makes us painfully aware that they are blissfully ignorant of all the red flags we see. When the twist happens, its power lies not in an oh-gosh-what-a-twist experience for the viewer, but in the visceral feeling of the children's world being ripped out from under them. Between the pacing, the animation and even the shot angles, the scene gives us no time to think about the twist (whether or not we saw it coming), and zeroes us in on the raw sensory experience of confusion, terror and betrayal, putting us as viewers right alongside Emma and Norman, huddling underneath that truck. The moment may be a small twist for the viewer, but it's an absolute shattering for the children, and the show makes us feel it. IDK about anyone else, but from then on I forgot about the twist and was on board for every bump and turn of the emotional rollercoaster the last five minutes takes us on. The artists intentionally blend transitions in music, ambient sound, setting and line work in the childrens' facial expressions to seamlessly color each moment with shock, then horror, then hopelessness, then hope, so that we as viewers get a nearly first-person perspective on the rush of all these emotions. When the music picks up energy, and the children's voices get clearer and brighter, you really start to believe that these children can do it, that they can escape this cage and save the people they love. Then it cuts to Isabella. The music comes to a literally screeching halt, and all that fear comes rushing back. Isabella's almost wild expression as she stares at Little Bunny reminds the viewer that these actually are just a couple of kids, and that their most terrifying enemy, the one with absolute power over their lives, is on to them. The show wants you to come away from that ending remembering just how screwed these kids are, and the show gets what it wants. Alongside bursting at the seams with themes and ideas that the rest of the season builds on, and being just plain gorgeous, TPN's first episode sets up the emotional arc of the story better than any other anime I've seen. It allows our minds as viewers to go wild with speculation, but doesn't let us forget what every second means to the characters. It instills in our gut the understanding of what these children have to lose, what they're up against, and the thrill of hope that keeps them going. Everyone I know who has watched this episode has immediately clicked on the next, because we are all, like the children, ready to clamber through untold terror and danger for a chance at that impossibly unlikely moment of hope.

I loved Yona of the dawn's first episode. It introduces the characters well, but what it does perfectly is introducing their flaws the most. Giving them a bigger room for character development. The main lead is a spoiled princess who gets what she wants all the time, and she is very naive. Also the plot twist at the end of the episode is just mind-blowing but at the same time it could be seen coming so that it doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere. Side note: aside from the first episode the whole series holds perfectly. This series has it's way of just developing the characters in the most natural way and making their actions understandable, explainable and justifiable or redeemable. I actually found myself siding most of the time with the antagonist of the story, but that's not a bad thing at all because the main character herself is conflicted about if she actually should side with him despite him ruining her life. I highly recommend it.

While it can be admittedly overwhelming with its wide variety of perspectives and how much the story bounces around, having that grounding of the newspaper reporters trying to piece the tale together helps to show just what kind of ride folks are in for. I should've put more effort into my pro Code Geass comment on the last video. There really was no shortage of support for it, so I have to believe that it was the lack of a single sufficiently suitable feature comment on it. Roughly what I'd have said: Code Geass Ep1 covers an incredible amount of ground for the purposes of making it a stellar introduction. It wastes no time setting the stage in introducing the world, in its alternate strange but still familiar geopolitical history. It ties that in perfectly into the introduction of our protagoists, showing us a glimpse of how they were personally shaped by that history, but makes it clear that there is more to be explored. And don't get me started how it perfectly establishes the themes, intrigues and character dynamics that we will be seeing for the rest of the show, capping it all off with a beautiful broadside of the fantasy element. There is literally NOTHING I would change about that first episode. Not even Rivalz.

I could definitely go for more of these commentor follow-ups. When it comes to 1st episodes that are truly decisive and therefore may not be the "best", I'd go with Rising of the Shield Hero. A long 1st episode, like Re:Zero, a lot of people chose not to watch it at first because of it's rape accusation, the fact that slavery exists in the world, and the main character is considering purchasing a slave. There's so much more to this unusual (and very welcome) take on the Isekai genre than those particular facts of the 1st episode. It's no wonder at all why the main character was awarded best VA of the year and Raftalia (that slave) won best girl.

I would like to bring up Death Note as well, although similar to Black Lagoon and Attack on Titan, it's kind of a two parter. Since L doesn't get introduced until Episode 2 I can understand why it was left out. That said I think the first episode does a really good job of introducing the viewer to Light Yagami. His motivations, goals and personality are so well characterized it really leaves an impression imo. We also get to see Ryuk, the shinigami world and what the more basic rules of the notebook are. It sets things up perfectly.

You get to know the MC, the gorgeous cast, the absolutely best "defective" waifu Isla, and the dramatic roller-coaster of emotions you're going to experience. Right off the bat it throws you everything you need to know and it develops on it flawlessly. By the end of the episode you're both full of tears in your eyes and invested for what's to come. I'm surprised no one mentioned Higurashi. Unlike Gakkougurashi and Promised Neverland, you know everything is going to go terribly wrong from the first second of the show, but you don't know how. As you keep on watching, the show masks its opening with its character introductions and interactions, only to slowly reveal its mystery and build up the tension, ending with one of the most chilling scenes I have seen in anime.

I don't know but First Episode of The Talentless Nana is so good even though the series came just now it was so much confusion at first then we get to know at very next moment how and who the title belongs to, it was having so amazingly plot twists that made the first episode so good.

Death Note and Psycho Pass were both really good at establishing the general premise, world, and characters involved in their respective stories. With just the first episode, a viewer can know exactly if they want to continue with the series or not.

I thought Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress had an amazing 1st episode as well. The whole steampunk aesthetic is somethng I really liked, and the music and animation was great! Too bad the show went downhill so quickly after that, but the 1st ep was still top notch!

This list has a couple of episodes I was thinking of that would be on the list. After watching this, it finally came to mind another anime I think should for sure be on it. FLCL! I first came across it by random chance on Adult Swim late at night, and I'll never forget what an experience it was. Watching the first episode was the first time I had seen an anime that was so bizarre, out there, eccentric, irrational and all that would have been normally a huge turnoff for me. But yet, there I was, entranced by what I was seeing, not really sure what was going on, but wanting to see where the characters and story were going regardless.

Late entry to the list - Ah! My Goddess! had a pretty good first episode. I don't exactly remember it all the best, but I remember being immediately ensnared in what was clearly becoming a romance anime.

this was nice mine didn't make it but every single one mentioned here deserved it as an old otaku I appreciate how many 90's anime made it in

My top first episode is Ichigo Mashimaro episode 1 because it has girls making an ashtray as a birthday present for one of the girls' older sister. I can't think of any other anime premiere that involves ashtray manufacturing in any capacity.

Glass quick question regarding first episodes do you think psycho pass has a great first episode??? and darling in the franxx??

dammit, if I knew the commenter episode was gonna be so soon I would've commented sooner, but I still love these less complicated videos. Plus I feel that they're easier on Tristan to make.

this brings up an idea of a video that might need to be done. Shows that you need to see the second episode. You easily reference "Black Lagoon" which with the second episode sells the entire series as must watch. There are series that sell the actual twist only after you get into the second episode. A great example of this is the Saga of Tanya the Evil. Episode 1, by the end you think she is the epitome of a pure evil child. But wait until Episode 2, and you see that she isn't who she appears to be.

a great first episode. Nobodys Boy Remi (1977). I go about from watching the french version, so the english version is something i havent watched. But man did that episode made us feel for the little boy Remi and have a couple times cry.

SukaSuka Had a great opening with a Scarborough fair, it showed some world building for the show. Later in the episode it shows off the main characters and their reasons for being in the situation they are in. Feels like there's very little downtime.

I don't think that's why. I recall some old video where he mentioned how one can see oneself in the reflections of an old television screen.

Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons. The way the beloved Princess is turned upon by everyone in a matter of hours and exiled to an isolated base where she has to kill dragons of all things. A lot of folks didn't like it but I found the first ep made me want to see the how and why of the world and the character development was good. Plus I found out what "rondo" meant.

Carole & Tuesdays first episode is amazing. Watanabe is a genius
@OriginalPiMan4 жыл бұрын
Ooh, good call. Many anime on this and the previous list have been thrilling, psychological, or simply action. Carole & Tuesday is none of these things, but it didn't need to be to be a great first episode. We get the main characters, we get the music, we get the setting (to what little that matters). Good stuff.

My pick would of been a hidden gem of an anime called The Tower of Druaga. The first episode is a parody of anime and fantasy tropes done years before Konosuba. It is such a good first episode that you can watch it alone and never watch the rest of the show.
@JNHMTC3173 жыл бұрын
This may be a biased point because it's the first show I watched that truly made me fall in love with anime, but I think the first episode of Terror in Resonance also deserves a good mention. The first five minutes set you up with a minimum dialogue thrill ride, and as you continue the episode you're just made more and more curious as to who the characters are so that when the bomb drops at the end of the episode (literally) you're left reeling wondering what could drive such young characters to commit such grandiose crimes. Terror in Resonance has some low points here and there but the first episode is, to me, an incredible example of slowly building up suspense and curiosity in a viewer.

Where was Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters?? The first episode of the entire franchise is so iconic that Exodia and blue eyes white dragon are ingrained in consciousness in every kid who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons. Also it was the first gateway episode for a lot of people to start watching Anime. I feel as if Yu-Gi-Oh! is slept on in the conversation of the best first anime episodes.

This was a great little two part series. I gotta wonder about the other end of the spectrum though. Since we all know you so well for thinking "the ending is paramount," what shows would you say have the best endings?

I think Gakkou Garashi (school live!) had a really good first ep, and if Talentless Nana's adaptation of the first chapter is good it also will have had a great ep 1.
@thenew45594 жыл бұрын
Talentless Nana's first episode was pretty good, it was definitely a good subversion of expectations.
