Bondrewd is one of the best villains I’ve ever seen in fiction. Absolute dedication to the advancement of humanity results in a man becoming a machine with only one goal- to acquire knowledge. The abyss creates an insatiable hunger for knowledge in him, and his methods do not waver for a second when confronted with destroying others lives... yet he still loves and remembers everyone who is sacrificed because they helped science move forward. Subarashi indeed

Something I... like (though I'm not sure that's quite the right word) about him is that the first person he ever sacrificed was he himself. He isn't the kind that touts on and on about how sacrifice is important to progress, while only ever sacrificing others and keeping save himself. No, he sacrificed himself first and only when it turned out that he couldn't do it again, he turned to sacrificing other. He's still a twisted monster, but this aspect of him I can respect. This willingless to sacrifice himself first is something that makes him a faaaar superior villain to me than any sob-story background about how he only became this horrible person because of his tragic backstory ever could have done. He certainly follow's Lelouches words: "Those who are willing to kill others must also be ready to be killed themselves." (or however the exact quote went again).

Bondrewd’s potentially last words to Nanachi is my number 1 favorite moment in anime. Where after everything, the fights, the horribleness, everything he’s done and how hard our heroes fought against him. He says in a fatherly tone in the DUB “May your journey be filled with both Curses…and Blessings” and the way they animate his eye movements it looks like he is genuinely smiling to Nanachi and wishing her and her friend the best. No villain I’m aware of is capable of being so horribly ruthless and yet so compassionate.
@ConvincingPeople2 жыл бұрын
I also love Nanachi's response: Just gently pushing away his hand and telling him to shut up, because he finally has no power over them. What's so haunting about Bondrewd is, like many abusive people, his love is genuine but only serves to sharpen the contrast of his cruelty and manipulation, and seeing Nanachi gain the strength to truly escape his hold over them is *so* cathartic.
@viaxxl9 ай бұрын
It’s so crazy how he was written with love so genuine that he has the strength to do these things to what he loves. He sacrifices himself, remembers the children he turns into lunchboxes, cares and takes Nanachi as an apprentice, sacrifices his daughter Prushka who he genuinely loved, and he smiles when he’s defeated and the Narahate body is destroyed. I love Bondrewd!

This film was literally perfection. As a manga reader they couldn't have done it any better.
@o4ugDF54PLqU4 жыл бұрын
eh, I liked it but it definitely wasn't perfect. The pacing was too fast and as a result we didn't really have time to get emotionally invested in Prushka (as a non-manga-reader), so the ending wasn't as emotional as the movie wanted us to feel (and it was also slightly predictable, but maybe that's just me). I thought the flashbacks were pretty awkward as well, and some could have easily been shown realtime. Bondrewd and Nanachi were great characters here, receiving plenty of developments, but Riko and Reg are still as bland as ever.

Made in Abyss has one of the strongest self reinforceing metaphors I've seen in a series. And it's the tip of the iceberg metaphor. Everything in this show is made to make you believe that the Abyss is beautiful. That the show is going to be cute. Heck, even the 3 episode rule has this show looking just like this, cute and a fun adventure for the whole family. Sure you hear some hints the Abyss is bad, but it sure doesn't seem like it. As the movie starts, it presents a perfect example of this as Riko sees the leafy bugs. Now normally, we'd think that a bug that disguises itself as a leaf does so to avoid being eaten by birds or whatnot. But in the Abyss, everything is a predator and the bug looks like this so that you will come close without realizing and be filled with its larva that feed on you, but still keep you alive for freshness and warmth. Even the music reinforces this with many of the songs starting out with a very calm or cute melody that befits a character or moment. But all of that gets completely drowned out when the Abyss's brass comes in. It's a great series and the movie did not disappoint in the slightest, which I am always fearful of with any anime movie sequels.

It's so cathartic watching someone talk so passionately about Made in Abyss (also my #1 favorite anime) and reacting as intensely as I know I will when I watch it. I don't have many friends that even watch anime, let alone are as obsessed with it as I am so it is actually really great to see you as emotional as you are. I know that feeling, it is rare for me, but when it happens in books or anime or series I find it almost transformational. The most recent anime movie that gave me such a powerful, full body experience was when I saw Maquia in the theatre during a limited screening in Calgary in 2018. I know Made in Abyss is going to be even better. I'm preparing myself. PS. I'm holding off on the manga too, I get exactly what you mean about wanting to experience it through animation first. PSS. Nah the creator is just a bit of a weirdo. There's been numerous instances in the manga where the creator has implied very weird circumstances regarding children or shown child nudity with really no context. I won't spoil it, but it's odd to say the least. I'm still a Made In Abyss fan because of the stellar story, but the creator is nonetheless super weird to me, and the child nudity with no context diminishes the quality of the story significantly.

Bruh, I don't cry during anime and tbh most of the movie I kinda struggled to feel much, but that ending. That was an ending to be sure. That might have been one of the most beautiful ending to a movie I have ever seen. It might be that i'm completely clueless, but I did not expect that at all. Left nothing to be desired but season 2. Season 1 gives a little hint of what the horror of Made in Abyss. The bleeding and poison scene is ugly, but this movie shows you exactly the kind of fuckeduppery you're in for for the rest of the story. Bleed+poison goes "you must be this resistant to gore to ride", and then the Nanachi flashback adds horrible gut punches to the gore. After that you know exactly what you're in for... You're going to have a bad time, and you're going to love it.

@lunaticyoshi14 жыл бұрын
I blame advertising and marketing. Unless you're a dedicated fan, it probably went under the radar. Corona-chan delayed the initial release date in a lot of areas, so I think that threw a lot of people off too. I was able to see it in the theater, but I almost missed it because the theater in my area only confirmed the showing 2 days in advance. Not to mention, $20 to stream a single movie online is a little off putting for some people (I think it's worth it, but this is a complaint I've been hearing).

There is a movie theater in the next town over from me that's been operating since the 1920s and in the late 70s/early 80s they converted it to a more arthouse theater to where it's now the best place to see foreign films, independent films, and limited release films. I was so disappointed because this was going to be shown there this spring and then the theater completely closed (and is still closed) as one of the billion different effects of the global pandemic.

Much like the Abyss itself, it’s an anime that draws you in with the mystery and frankly wonder. With rich world building it keeps you wanting more. How deep does the Abyss go? Are we only simply scratching the surface? The horrors of the Abyss and the curse and the white whistles and cave raiders just add so much here. It’s something can’t really be put into words. I’ve watched season 1 5 times now and I’ve watched the 3 movies twice each. No matter if you’ve watched it already it’s the kind of anime that each time you see it you still get those feelings like it’s the first time you’ve come upon something strange and otherworldly. I will eventually watch season 1 and 2 maybe 10 times over and the movies also. Made in Abyss is that good to where If I need a good anime to watch when there is nothing else good showing I can always watch perfection with Made In Abyss and dream……

I bought it in physical, so I read flipping page by page with my own hands, sometimes having problems flipping the page for what I was seeing, and in shock trying to proccess what was happening, sometimes in disbelief of it being real. Being in shock apparently helped me dull the pain... Now that I watched it knowing what was going to come, it was far, FAR worse. It was by far, the most horrifying, disgusting, and beautiful things I have ever seen. This is, without a doubt, even harsher to watch the second time. It's 3 AM, and I don't think I'll be sleeping today. An hour has already passed and I still have goosegumps.
