Amazing as George Best was, the tragic thing is that nobody ever saw him play at his absolute peak: the peak age for an outfield player is around 26 to 28, and by that time, in early 1970’s, his off field activities had taken their toll, the Utd team were in sharp decline and Northern Ireland didn’t have a team good enough to qualify for any major tournament. I would have chosen Velibor Vasovic actually, led '71 Ajax to Champions League victory (as a captain), played in two finals prior (In 1966 with Partizan and 1969 with Ajax) and scored in both despite being a defensive midfielder. The biggest problem with football until 1980s was that fans only cared for flamboyant wingers and goal poachers, so if you happened to be a DM/CB/SW and your name wasn't Franz Beckenbauer, you'd be underestimated by everybody. Other reason for choosing Vasovic is that he wasn't an idiot or a complete piece of shit, unlike many of his contemporaries (Savic, Dzajic, Petrovic, Santrac, you name it).

Swede here, I like the pick of Nordahl, a lot of people think that it should be Zlatan but the whole video is based on how good they were relative to their time period, if it was pure skill every choice would be players from the last 20-30 years. You can't compare statistics in a fair way either as leagues differ and the style of football differs in different time periods. What can be said is that Nordahl was the best striker in arguably the best league in the world around 1950-55, Zlatan have been a top striker in several top leagues. Honestly there are a lot of Swedish players from the 40's and 50's that can measure up to Zlatan when comparing relative to their time period. Sweden in Nordahls time was one of the best footballing nations in the world with an Olympic gold in 1948, WC bronze in 1950 and WC silver in 1958. The fail in the 1954 qualification was due to a rule that no professional players were allowed in the national team, sweden had several superstars in european top leagues that didn't play in the national team, this rule was removed in time for the 1958 world cup and the reason that it had less impact in 1950 was that swedish players had just started leaving for professional leagues at that time so many of the best players were still amateurs, Gunnar Nordahl swedens best player in 1950 did however not play in the world cup which is a shame. There are some interesting what-if scenarios in the 1950 world cup if sweden had all their top players. The last four teams back then played a group stage and a rematch was used for tie-breaks. The final four teams was Spain(4), Sweden(3), Brazil(2) and Uruguay(1). If Swedens 3-2 loss against Uruguay in a very close game went differently some wierd things would happen. If Sweden instead won(and all other results stayed the same), Sweden would have gotten a second play-off game against Brazil for the gold AND Uruguay and Spain would get a play-off game for the Bronze, so basically after the tournament was over there would be an extra "final" and an extra "bronze match" like it is now. If the game was a draw, Brazil would first play Uruguay in the last game of the finalist group stage, (Uruguay won 2-1 in the original game), and then if Uruguay won they would play a rematch to settle the tie-break. Imagine playing the same game twice, for a world cup gold, where one team only has to not lose both games and the other needs to win both.
