Referential subversion of expectations. The narrator speaks in a suggestive tone about Applejack's desires for a book. As "50 Shades of Grey" is a horrible mess of abusive relationship rape-fic, calling it "50 Shades of Hay" leads us to think it's a novella on sex with the usual horse-play-on-words seen in most pony stories.

Oh my gosh that thumbnail. I remember it from that one episode where Pinkie pie played the bag pipes and got all depressed when he friends asked her to stop. She was making cupcakes with Rainbow Dash, the writers knew EXACTLY what they were doing. Loved the story and voice work! Well done!

I really like the bait-and-switch at the end. Given that Pinkie Pie is such a perfect character to write horror fanfics about and some of the most popular MLP horror stories are centered around Pinkie, it is clever how this story sets her up as a manic only to reveal at the end she never had any plans to hurt Applejack.
