Explanation of the end: After killing Mergo, the reason you were here, The Moon Presence no longer needs you so Gehrman sees this as a chance to free you from the dream and prevent you from suffering the same fate he did. At this point, there are three different endings: 1) If you let Gehrman kill you, you are spared the torment of eternally being called back into the Dream upon death and can move forward, living your life in the waking world until the next hunt, when some other sapless hunter gets pulled in to do the MP's dirty work. 2) If you refuse to die then you must resolve yourself to kill the host of the dream. If you die here then you'll just simply will yourself back into the dream, stubbornly denying defeat. Gehrman, however, wants to escape the dream so if he dies, he can leave. Once you free Gehrman, the MP descends to make you it's newest "puppet" and the next host of the dream. In this ending, you replace Gehrman: eternally trapped in the dream, forced to help the hunters summoned by the Great One to do it's dirt work with the doll as your only friend. Waiting for the next hunter to free you and restart the cycle. 3) If you've consumed at least 3 of the umbilical cords then your will surpasses that of the MP's. Now you are on the verge of ascending into becoming a Great One yourself, and become a being stronger than the MP (but not as strong as Mergo). At this point the MP sees you for what you really are: a threat. If you ascend, you'll be stronger than it is and your existence threatens it's own life. It can't subjugate you either so there's only one path left for it: to destroy you. Once you slay the MP, you're more than likely pushed over the edge and then evolve into an infant Great One yourself. Nursed by the Doll, you'll become a powerful Godlike being, but what will you do after that?

TheHappy_P0tat0 I don't think the purpose of the dream is to kill Mergo. None of the previous hunters in the dream accomplished this. I really feel that the dream is dying due to the sun rising and you killing Mergo's Wet Nurse at the same time is purely coincidental. At most the Mensis ritual that may have to do with Mergo is causing the night to be longer, so killing Mergo ends the ritual. But I don't feel The Moon Prescene's "mission" for you was to kill Mergo, otherwise you would have been given that information by MP.

Steve Rudzinski I feel like, over the years, the MP has the hunters kill other Great Ones (Mergo being the most recent target). As for why it didn't tell you itself...let's be honest I don't think it can talk. Also, would you trust that thing if it told you to kill a baby?

It seems like the hunter's dream's purpose is to kill Beasts to get blood FOR the Moon Presence, getting further than that is rare. Killing a Great One may be something that never happened prior to our Hunter.

Watching this again now, it really is one of those amazing things. Like, Gehrman here is old, he's even said that he's so old he's of little use. He's crippled, he's aged, he's been sitting in this dream for who knows how long, out of practice. And he's STILL this good. What was he like when he was young? When he wasn't crippled? When he was in his prime of beast slaying. It's no wonder that his style and skill spawned the entire lineage of hunters.

A long ass time ago there was an old Culture who found a way to contact Gods (or aliens) to their plain of existence, bringing with them untold power but at a terrible cost to them and eventually it led to their whole civilization getting fucked up. Fast foreword to the time of a school called Burg and its main cast of folk finding the old ruins of this long dead culture, some of them were like "hey this blood we found down there is sick, heals wounds, gets us high, and now we can even talk to these weird voices in our head, shits dope" while others were more skeptical but still wanted to know about this weird power coming off this old culture. So some of them left and created the healing church to spread the good stuff around and see what happens while the rest at the school just wanted to get in touch with the old ones. Some of the old ones were on board with this idea and allowed people to think they had control over the power, while other old ones like the wet nurse used humans as a means of expanding their control over this realm. When shit started getting real and people where turning into things (Like Rom) it was then that one of the great ones (the last one you fight in the game) got the great idea, 'Hey why have multiple gods ruling this plain of existence when I can get some poor unlucky bastard to go off and kill the rest, then when I'm done with them I'll just suck all the life power out of them and use them to lure some other folks in, Rinse and repeat. Your job as a hired gun in the beginning is to do this then be absorbed for power, but at the Burg they found a way to counter this by becoming a god themselves, as default you can not do this for we lack the blood and cords that make up a god, but if you consume three cords and continue to suck up the blood from everything you kill you will do the next best thing to being birthed as a god, you transcend into being a god, which begs the question for what reason do you wish to be a god? After all, every great one loses its child and wants one to raise as its own, and what does the doll say to you at the very beginning of the game? Is it really a doll, or just a great one wishing you to become a baby yourself.

Toasted llah Hmmm. It's not a bad theory, but the problem is it doesn't really work with the Submit ending, because you just wake up as if nothing ever happened. It sort of flies in the face of you being there to be absorbed for power if they can just let you go. To me, the Moon Presence would be one of the more sympathetic Great Ones. It has lost its child, but as Gehrman chose to be a surrogate for it, it agreed to lend its power to the Hunters in their fights against the wrongs committed by the Healing Church, Choir, Byrgenwerth, etc. Every hunt, a single hunter is chosen to be blessed with the ability to visit the Hunter's Dream and become more powerful through blood and be able to be reborn upon death so long as they are under the MP's protection via the Dream. (This is why all other hunters stay dead but you.) When you complete your task, Gehrman seeks to have mercy upon you and end your dreaming to allow you to return to a somewhat normal life without dreams (like Eileen and Djura). You can accept this, or you can fight back. Your two choices ending up being becoming the new surrogate in Gehrman's place as you watch over the Dream as he did and let him finally rest in peace, or by taking the umbilical cords you become too enlightened (or becoming like a god does make sense as well), so it is unable to take you in as a surrogate, goes hostile, and then when you kill it, you take the MP's place as a Great One. But this would explain why in both of those endings the MP tries to embrace you as a mother would to her child.

I Agree with you but I find that even with the killing of the MP would the dream just end, If you work with the MP and then except death you wake up in still fucked up Yarn, If you refuse and kill Gehrman you become him by being the knew old one who leads the new through the hunt which seems to be happening all the time and never really ends, and if you kill G and then kill MP you become an old one reborn, I still feel like the fact that G dies and you get prey kill but you kill the MP and the Nightmare is slain, it does not die only the idea stays like the Mind of M, I still get the impression that the Doll has some meaning behind it, but I guess we both just are falling prey to the best concept of every soul game where its left to the player to find their own ending

Wolf Guard heres my guess about why we are manipulated by the moon presence into stopping the hunt: one of the notes you find in the lecture building floor 2 says: "the nameless moon presence, beckoned by laurence and his associates. paleblood." and what is the very first readable note you find in the game? "seek paleblood to transcend the hunt." in addition, another note you find inside the lecture building says: "hunt the great ones. hunt the great ones. hunt the great ones." this gives you an idea about how the scholars of byrgenwerth were absolutely obsessed with killing the great one suitable of granting them the power of transcendence into the higher plane of existence. and the ministers of the healing church knew that paleblood was the final material needed (along with the three third cords) to achieve that transcendence, based on the second note that ive mentioned (ill assume that the note was left by the blood minister who oversaw our transfusion of yharnam blood.) so if a blood minister knew this, its only reasonable that one of the two highest ranking organisations within the healing church knew it as well. im talking about the school of mensis. not to mention that touching the corpse of micolash in yaharghul sends you straight to the lecture building. this is a hint that the school of mensis actually takes a lot of its knowledge about the great ones from byrgenwerth (maybe micolash was one of the last scholars who joined the ranks of the healing church before byrgenwerth was declared forbidden ground?) and the paleblood ritual conducted by the school of mensis results in the descent of the great ones, and the moon presence descends with them (you can see that the moon is EXTREMELY close to the ground.) if the moon presence actually reaches the ground, it will undoubtedly be killed by the one reborn (which i believe was created by the school of mensis as a tool powerful enough to kill the moon presence) and so, the moon presence frantically tasks us with stopping the mensis ritual by killing the cause of it: mergo. to conclude, i think the moon presence is simply afraid of being killed. (damn, this took way too much time.)

Here's what's going on: In the beginning, the Great Ones came to the world for unknown reasons and chapels were erected to worship them, though these chapels were buried over time and became, what we call, the Challice dungeons. Years later, after they were dug out, people discovered secrets within the dungeons, such as ways to call the Great Ones to them and also, the blood of said Great Ones. The blood seemed to contain a kind of healing property and could cure any disease, thus the healing church was founded and distributed the blood across all of Yharnam. Because of this, the city thrived in power and, at the centre of it all, the Healing Church rose like a pillar of power. However, the intoxication of blood eventually brought despair unto the city as predicted by Master Wilhelm and his followers. The blood transformed the citizens. Their limbs elongated and fur grew in large masses in places they normally wouldn't grow. Others took more monstrous shapes, such as the clerics who were always working in the environment of blood ministration. Eventually, civilians decided to hunt for the beasts and potential victims. The first of them to take arms was one of Wilhelm's apprentices, a man named Gehrman who owned his own workshop with which he created the weapons that became the bane of the beasts. Later the Church followed this example with Ludwig and the black and white hunters and began fighting back in futility, the same way people will flail about while being burned alive. If that wasn't enough, the Great Ones reappeared. Perhaps people constantly summoned them so much that they eventually grew attached to the world or perhaps this is what they wanted: a world that relied on their blood and became monsters from it. Either way, one fact is for certain: They are not all in agreement with each other. In the case of the Moon Presence, by using Gehrman as a medium for the Hunter's Dream, it would recruit other hunters to hunt and kill Great Ones stronger than itself. Recently, it's hired you (through Gehrman) to kill the baby Mergo, a Great One so powerful it could create a Nightmare world on a massive scale just in it's infancy, it's cries can be heard in the waking world almost as if it can cross those reality borders and it can even draw (and supposedly command) other Great Ones such as it's Wet Nurse.

The reason Pat & Woolie had such a hard time with Gascoigne and Gehrman, is because the bosses where designed to teach you, then test you, on the games mechanics. They never bothered learning how to play bloodborne. They played the entire game exactly the same way they played DS2..

The Pickles They aren't really any more unwieldy than a halberd. It's kind of like using a really long-handled war pick and is quite effective to that end. The main issue is that the blade is easy to break and would be more effective as a beak like a warpick or a lucerne hammer.

I just want to say, I fucking loved this LP. I know a lot of people disliked their skill level, their play style, their allocation of stats, even how they explored. But for me it was still a thrill to watch them go through and discover each new thing with excitement and hype. Very few LPs have had this much excitement for a game's content, so it was really fun to see that. And, at the end of the day, Pat and Woolie had fun. That's the most important thing. Yes, this channel is their "job" but at the same time they still play video games, an activity that should be fun no matter what criticism they get. Although many didn't enjoy aspects of this LP I loved the adventure and I'm really glad they enjoyed the experience too. I hope they realize that it's not all vitriol and shitflinging down here in the comments. Many people genuinely enjoyed this LP. Either way, it's awesome that they enjoyed the game so much. Now on to Bloodborne DLC and possibly DS3!

I just finished watching this playthrough and also discovered your channel only recently. I know that you quit doing videos a few days ago, which is really sad. I really enjoyed this playthrough a lot. I know the feeling of being triggered when someone does not see or understand what i saw during a playthrough and i had these moments as well while watching. But in the end i have to say that this was amazing. Even through you made a lot of jokes and seemed very distracted sometimes, it was obvious that you were very observent and really stringed together a lot of the plot points. That you did really well in most of the boss fights is another thing. It's also interesting to see how different the different experiences are. While i beat Ebrietas in my first try and also had not so many problems with the last two bosses, i had much more problems with other bosses. What i want to say: Thanks for this, it was a lot of fun. :)
