On the subject of people basing their interest in video games on graphics, I think that really highlights the depth in which people get into the hobby. For the average consumer, appearance often equates to quality. Cars and movies are good examples. For people who know little about cars, they just look at what is the sleekest, shiniest, fanciest looking one and assume that is, at the very least, top of the line. People who actually know cars can pick apart whether it actually drives well or is comfortable, which can easily mean the fancy looking car is awful. Same with movies, for normal audiences they just want to see the big blockbusters with lots of cool setpieces and action. For people really into movies, older classics and small indie projects may pull more interest due to better themes/ideas. Video games are just like any medium of interest. The term casual is often thrown around as just a generic insult these days, but it is actually applicable in the sense that many people just have a casual, surface-level interest in games. Games with photorealistic graphics, giant worlds, and big name voice actors/developers involved often stand out more. And for good reason, those are pretty cool things to see in games and will naturally garner attention. That's why games such as Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty grab massive audiences despite possibly having some gameplay foibles or simplistic themes/mechanics. Those games are great for people that have a passing interest, because they show just what the medium can do when firing on all cylinders, showing the biggest and best of technological/developmental progress in the field. But for people who really involve themselves in the interest and dedicate time to what they love, that starts to matter less while more intricate mechanics/ideas become more important. Boiled down, casuals are genuinely a massive population of those who love video games, in which the newest, fanciest products appeal. In those situations, the more intricate aspects don't matter as much. For me, a car is a car, so when I see a fancy looking vehicle drive by I assume it must be a really good car. I may be completely wrong, but that's because I have a casual interest in cars. It's good for those triple A games to come out and really push the popularity of the medium, but they certainly aren't representative of what video games are good at.
@VincentWeisTheThird6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I've found that many young adults that I grew up alongside don't just look at Call of Duty as the newest prettiest game, for example. Even casual game players who only pick up CoD and FIFA will still notice differences between them. Sure, they won't want to talk about it online, but casual players absolutely notice when mechanics work or don't work. But the graphics are a part of their enjoyment. I think that people like ourselves who love games and play so many have a bad habit of pretending that the graphics shouldn't and don't really matter as much as the mechanics, but the games we play are the sum of their parts. The feel and look of a game are as important as the mechanics governing them, and I don't think that casual fans stay casual because they only care about graphics. Mainstream games convey their mechanics much more clearly, but are also often hard. Trying not to die in Cod or get messed up in the online of any sports game is as hard as getting mid-tier in League. It's not that the mechanics are shallow for the newbies, its that those games emphasize their hooks, the things that attract the first look more than games like your Dark Souls 1, that have fantastic mechanics and are difficult to master, but look and feel like shit by comparison to your AC and CoD. TL;DR Graphics matter. Those of us that play a lot of games may be more willing to appreciate mechanical depth without polished feedback systems and clean looks, but people who only want to buy a game a year don't want to risk wasting it on an interesting game that feels like shit. If Half-Life 1 cost just as much as Black Ops 4, and you had to decide to part ways with $60 to get one or the other to play for the year, its a simple cost-efficiency choice for most consumers.

@Samael11136 жыл бұрын
Ifrit and Efreet are an interesting case study for a number of reasons. First, let me start with "Efreet" is the most proper spelling and pronunciation (Though Ifreet is arguably acceptable) of what amounts to a "Fire Djinn" (Again Djinn / Djinni proper spelling of "lazy" version Genie) However, with Ifrit's existence, we have a fun little translation through translation issue. FF borrowed the word from Arab / Persian, and then it was localized to other languages Meaning, the initial conversion to Nihongo was likely modified to fit their sound conventions (and also possibly to "Sound Cooler" and more palatable). Then, when translated to other languages from Japanese, if the translator doesn't know the subject well (or at all), has limited room in text boxes, and is just converting the Katakana into western alphabet phonetic, there is a lot of room for minor alterations. All this is further complicated by the more important fact, that Espers / Eidolons / Summons / Materia / etc, are all relatively unique and specific beings. Which brings us back to the Djinni / Genie side of things, with Disney. It's all proper names, not what the being is. You aren't summoning "Ice Witch with vaguely Hindu origins" or "Arabian-inspired Dragon God" or "Greek Earth Precursor to Gods", you are summoning "Shiva". "Bahamut" and "Titan". So like Genie, from Disney's Aladdin, which is the proper name of a poor soul who had terrible parents belonging to the race of beings called Djinni, you are summoning a being whose parent are just slightly better and less hipster than Genie's parents, and are summoning "Ifrit" of the Efreeti. Meaning, in video games where you are summoning a specific being "Ifrit" is the proper spelling and pronunciation. Outside of the same or very similar convention, use of the word Ifrit to describe the Arabian / Persian fire-spirits may get you looks. As an interesting aside, Ifrit is a rare case in video games where they did not pull from an already established well-known being of myth. Almost everything else in (let's face it, we're primarily talking about) Final Fantasy (since it popularized and started the pop culture knowledge and spelling) is a very specific entity already, not an indistinct member of a group. Titan is maybe the only other one I can think of off-hand.

Also it's a little scary what gets lost to the mists of time. I don't remember the vast majority of this game. I played it when it came out and I know I finished it, bc I remember the dumb bit at the end. Despite the bad swimmy bits, I like the weird ghost ship setting here.

Stop thinking any game developer will care about your wrong opinions on multiple life bars, Woolie. And I'm pretty sure 3D video games didn't hard-start at Mario 64 either, PC was probably doing it a while before that. Anyway. It's weird that I remember the swimming sections but not the big Ocarina of Time Shadow Temple boat of the dead...

why is it there is a swimming section, but earlier when Pat fell in the water 20 times he didnt have to swim? im probably forgetting something.

In the early days of Mario water was either an instant death pit or an annoying level gimmick often both within the same game. It never made sense there either.

I respect it when English-speaking folks actually make an attempt to pronounce non-English names/words correctly, as opposed to "oh well, gonna butcher it anyway, so fuck it." I think polylingual folks are more likely to share my sentiment, though; in my experience, monolingual people tend to deride such attempts as "tryhard" or, in the case of Japanese words, "weeby."

Woolie, I really get where you're coming from with people who only play the hot new thing and don't appreciate older stuff, because it's for movies too. I was DUMBFOUNDED when I talked to certain people in high school and early college and realized that no, not everyone is at least a mild movie buff, a whole lot of people just see what comes out in theaters/on Netflix/to the Redbox and don't watch anything that's not current. Like, for me, not watching anything that predates my own existence would be a stupid way to experience media, but a lot of people do that, with the only exception being stuff that was formative for them as kids.
@VincentWeisTheThird6 жыл бұрын
I don't think its stupid to watch that way, I think that it's aggressively pretentious and dismissive of Woolie to say that they're enjoying their media wrong. They want to spend their (or their parents) hard-earned money on something they consider worthwhile, and logically it makes sense that when they have money to spend on either the newest Mummy or the very first one, they might look at the new one, see much higher quality CGI and an actor they know, and assume that its safe to say they'd enjoy that one more, when they have no reason to know about or care about older media. I think that, while it isn't always accurate, anyone who isn't a superconsumer assuming newer things will look better and generally have learned their lessons from the past is not unreasonable. Talk all you want about "appreciating what it was for the time". I will, I love doing so. But not everyone wants to spend hours not enjoying some older, now-shitty-looking media and thinking about how much they WOULD have enjoyed it years ago, when the opportunity they've spent on that could have been a newer safer equivalent instead that doesn't have that barrier to entry.
@BlueScarabGuy6 жыл бұрын
@@VincentWeisTheThird Honestly, I'm more tolerant of the mindset when it comes to games than movies, because games are far more expensive, require specific hardware, and age much fast because the progress of processing power and storage space (and therefore both graphical fidelity and number of features) is so exponential. Not to mention that games are an active medium and film and television is passive. I can understand not wanting to force yourself to actively interact and push yourself through the clunkiness of an older game. But with movies, especially from past the era of Old Hollywood? There's barely any real difference in how films work from after...Jaws, probably. Technology improves, stories adapt to fit the time, but movies are movies, and to just ignore thousands of films that are just as good or better than stuff coming out now (not "good for their time" or "important" necessarily, actually good in comparison to current fare) for no reason other than "it's old" is kinda limiting yourself. Like, I'm 22 and I couldn't imagine just ignoring the majority of all film that came out before the mid 90s.
@VincentWeisTheThird6 жыл бұрын
I can totally imagine it, because Jaws is a really good example. If you had seen amazing CGI and you go back to even the best practical effects, it is really obvious how fake it is. The illusion is harder to keep up when you're seeing it on a larger higher res screen and noticing how washed out the color is, how weird the acting might be, how improvised effects are. These things take away from your ability to be immersed in the medium. Is it possible to enjoy it, yes, but for those that aren't appreciating it for its time, they can't love it as much as the same tricks replicated with greater technical proficiency. Tropes and standards of the time don't always apply. Its the difference between sympathy and empathy. I can sympathize with Jaws. I see how impressive it was at the time, and I'm impressed by how well it does what it does, CONSIDERING the limitations. But I empathize with newer films because they make me feel similar emotions without me having to meet them halfway (if they're good). Some people can't go back to Half-Life 1 after Black Mesa because they don't want to sympathize with what they could have but didn't get to feel in the past, they want to feel all that they can now in the present. There's more than enough new media to satiate most people.
@BlueScarabGuy6 жыл бұрын
@@VincentWeisTheThird I mean...in theory I could get where you're coming from, but you say Jaws is a good example of a film that doesn't hold up but was great in its time, when Jaws TOTALLY still holds up. The acting is still fantastic, the cinematography is still good, and the special effects still totally work because their barely are any, and because of that the movie's writing, cinematography, music and performances were designed to compensate, and that compensation (i.e. we have to make you scared even if the shark isn't there) is what makes that film a masterpiece. Like, yeah, there are plenty of examples of films that are dated, but there are plenty of older films that could have been released yesterday and just used practical techniques out of choice, they hold up that well. Alien and Aliens come to mind. So does Raiders of the Lost Ark. So does Blade Runner. Like...I get where you're coming from, and when applied to games, which are computer animation by nature and therefore are incredibly easily dated, I tend to agree more. But with film, I feel like your argument kind of assumes that all older films feel fake or old or cheap to a modern viewer, and I think there are plenty of examples that don't.
@VincentWeisTheThird6 жыл бұрын
You're right that Jaws is a bad example, but I can totally tell the difference, and I think the the idea that those films could have been released yesterday and still hold up is a bit generous. At their best, yes, it's hard to tell exactly how they're done, and they down-play it, and they are technically effective, it isn't just effect quality. I'm not saying all older films feel that way, but the fact that so many of them do, and even the best of them can have that quaint old film quality to them means that it isn't irrational for a modern consumer to assume that they're better off watching newer forms of similar content. I am NOT saying that all old films feel fake and old. There are a handful that should go down in history for how well they hide their age, but not every consumer knows that, and for every one Jaws, there's ten old movies that don't hold up, and while it is a leap in logic to associate age with quality, it isn't irrational to consider opportunity cost and decide, that, yeah, this old horror movie my mom handed me MIGHT be super good, but (insert modern movie) is out, and the reviews from yesterday say it's good, so I'm gonna spend my time and money on that one instead. They might be missing out a little bit, sure, but Woolie's dismissive attitude is assuming that all casual consumers hate old media, when it's really just a preference. TL;DR My brother is a casual fan of both games and movies, and he doesn't HATE older stuff and say its all trash. But when he has $12 for either a movie ticket for an old kung-fu action flick or a Marvel movie, and he wants to see some good action, he will pick Marvel because he knows for sure that the movie won't have aged as much. Is he missing out on some amazing Jackie Chan action, maybe, but he doesn't know that he will like it, and he wants some guarantee on a return on his investment, in both his time and his money.

They're obviously referring to the original when they're referring to mindblowing graphics, not the HD version. Apart from the resolution it looks mostly the same anyway, apart from the many instances where the HD version actually looks (and sounds) worse.

Okay I'm gonna call out Woolie on that not watching films with subtitles thing. Yes, it's a strange line in the sand to draw but being that film is a visual medium, taking in the entire shot is important. And it's hard to do that when the narrative is entirely contained (for you) to the bottom inch of the screen.

The pronunciation of Irfit like most fictional names problably has multiple pronunciations. That being said near the beginning of FFXII Bathier is on the roof of the castle that’s being attacked by an airship, looks up at the airship and says, “Ah, the Ifrit.” He says it there like Ee-freet.

Pat's right about Ifrit's pronunciation being reflected by it's spelling. The Tales series spells and pronounces it Efreet. Although the pronunciation of Undine varies from game to game.
