The first big tour i went on i brought an Aluminum rack , big mistake , Aluminum work hardens and the welds eventually failed , after that i purchased tubus cromoly rack and it is still going strong after many years

I've got a Specialized Pizza rack on a Surly Straggler and it's great. I also put a Wald 139 basket on top. Super awesome for sure!

Will the Axiom work with carbon forks? I'd worry any kind of strap on system will risk damaging the carbon.

Ref the Topeak for suspension forks. There isn't enough clearance to add full mudguards. The one made by Thule is a better proposition.

I heard the specialized pizza rack is designed for a specific bike only.

I just fit one to a cannondale topstone no problem. the only thing i see being an issue is that it places the paniers high and forward rather than center on the wheel but it would be the same on any bike. i had to use the pizza slices that come with the rack however if I had longer bolts i wouldn't have needed them.
