I thought that was kinda funny. By the way I HAVE used the memory card slot in PS2 cases sometimes when I went to compete with friends in Armored Core III back in the day. However I did also have a generic CD jewel case specifically for PS1 cards that carried 4 cards. I even separated my save files by game type. Two RPG specific cards a card just for action games and one for shmups. As for some of my favorites overall? I loved the PS1 and PS2 cases as well as my Dreamcast games. But I have a special type of nostalgia for that era because that's when I started buying my games on my own with my own money. Before then either they were gifts from family or they were my older brother's buys. The first console that was specifically mine having been the PS2 and the Dreamcast. My brother wanting nothing to do with the Dreamcast because he was spending too much time going up to date some married chick in Toronto that he met on EverQuest. A woman who ended up being his guild leader's wife no less. Yeah, that was awkward hearing about at the time. I was sitting there playing PSO and there my brother was bragging about being the other guy for this woman with four kids. Always pissed me off when he would pull the cord from my Dreamcast modem so he could go and flirt online. I thought it pathetic really.

Yeah, I take my time reading them so I can feel more comfortable playing the game and there was still stuff I missed. I remember playing FF7 in middle school and loved it. I loved to take the manual with me when i had to go to work. Couldn't wait for work to be over to get back home to play again. But times have changed massively and tbh, i don't really enjoy playing video games anymore. Games are not appealing anymore and almost everything is digital. Even CD versions are another 50GB download at least and my gosh, all the day one patch crap... I miss the days when you bought a game, came home, plugged it in and the game was loaded within seconds and you could start playing. Manuals were always nice to look at. Especially the artwork.

For me it is the PAL PS1 cases, theres something about the embossed PlayStation font on the side which makes it feel unique and elegant. Delicate sure, but very distinctive from the generic CD jewel case. On a side note, i also appreciated on PS1 how platinum prints didn't compromise the cover art!
@lyrand64084 жыл бұрын
Johnny, I'm not sure if you missed it. But the Sega Genesis also had a plastic version of the 'red band' boxes, they were not just made in cardboard. In fact, one of my all time favorite console game cases were specifically those Genesis cases in plastic with the vertical "GENESIS" on the left side (the 'red band'). For example, just check the red band plastic case for the original Mortal Kombat, I have the original authentic one and it looks very good to this day. In my opinion the red band cases (in plastic) were the best one on the Genesis.

I used the memory card holders back in the day. If I was going to a friend's house to play some games, it was nice to just pop my save file in the case with the games I was bringing over. It did backfire on me once though. I traded in a GameCube game (can't remember what) and I didn't realize until later that I had left a memory card in the case and it was my only one. So not only did I lose my ability to save games, I didn't even get my 2 bucks for trading in a memory card!

One you didn't do was the Xbox one cases which are a little weird they're thinner then the PS4, have uniformed boarder colors on the spine and for some reason the disk is on the left side when you open them not on the right its almost as if every case is backwards. I would have to say I love the PS1 and Switch cases the most!

Great topic! The larger cases such as 3DO were all about shelf real estate in the shops. I worked in an independent games shop back when the 3DO came out. The bigger the box the easier it would catch the customers eye over the competition. Back then there were more players in the field, it wasn’t just Sega and Nintendo anymore so the newcomers had to try and make themselves stand out and get noticed.

It's also nice to see how there was a difference between regions in boxing, not only the box art. For example at Sega with the Saturn cardboard versions we had in Europe or the Blue Dreamcast jewel cases that where quiet unique, or cardboard Gameboy boxes in different sizes that came from Asian regions. Nowadays the cases seem all to be similar around the world besides artwork and title differences.

It's worth mentioning there were at least three different styles of 3DO boxes, all long box size: • There were the thin long boxes like the ones you showed. • There were 'shoebox' style HARD long boxes they had lids that opened up shoebox style. • And there were cardboard long boxes that were 'hinged' with a locking strip of black plastic that ran along the outer spine of the box. The flimsy thin ones you showed in this video were easily the worse of the three. Great topic, and best wishes to you and your family. Stay healthy, bro.

I love the box for the Philips G7000 game "Quest for the Rings". It made the game feel a lot more magical as the game itself had horrendous graphics while the artwork of the manual was amazing. Some PlayStation 2 game cases also had a spot for your memory card. It was usually an rpg or game that took longer to beat and the card holder was there so you would know which memory card it was on and also if you were bringing it over to a friend or relatives house to play where you left off. My friend was in the hospital battling leukemia and I would play Final Fantasy X while he watched. It seemed like he was holding on just to see the ending of the game because once I beat the game I went down to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat and when I returned I thought he was just sleeping. So, I let him be and went home only to get a phone call saying he had passed away.

Switch for the artwork on the outside and inside, for the space saving purposes, and because they're generally all uniform except for the insignia on the bottoms. I just line up Capcom (sub categories for Megaman games, Street Fighter games) games together, Nintendo (with sub categories for Mario's, Zelda's, etc) so it at least looks like a line up of orderly cases.

US-Saturn cases are my favorite. They just look amazing on a shelf imo, but of course it's a pain how easily they crack and how often the back covers seem to have some water or humidity damage to them. WiiU is second, because I like their unique color and how easily the discs pop in and out of them. With some of the disc cases it almost feels like it could damage the disc when you get it out of there, Gamecube for instance.

We in the PAL region got the lower end of the stick. We didn´t get the CD jewel cases fro PS1. The PS1 cases were thick and fragile. Cracks up extremely easy. The PS2 has the same DVD format BUT the covers have a boring design when displaying the games on the shelf. We only have a white background with a regular black print of the title. You can see for yourself at around 18:06 when Johnny is holding the Wii box and you see the game title on its side. Putting it in perspective, it is a poor sight to se a full shelf of PS2 games when all you see is black and white displaying what games you have in your collection. The NTSC versions are better showing each box their own unique print. My favourite system is the Super NIntendo but the cardboard boxes are fragile. My combo of stuff would be; the Snes box would be like the SEGA MEGA DRIVE (Genesis), the cartridges would have the US design and the system the PAL design. Love your show. Hope you and your family are well. Greetings from Sweden!

My favorite game cases are both the PS1 and PS2. There is no need to throw out the manuals because the case is made to hold them. Both could hold heavy duty manuals. PS1 you can easily see if it has a manual or not, and its compact. PS2 cases are relatively strong and durable, still compact and some of the ones I got from gamestop that came with a generic case, I could easily print out the actual cover and replace it.
