I always explain to people that German chocolate cake was not named after the country, but was named after a man named German, and Baker’s chocolate wasn’t named after the occupation, but was named after a man named Baker. I love stories about words as much as I love John’s teaching videos.

I grew up 5 miles from Mrs. Clay's house on Academy Drive in Dallas. I never knew it until the story of the origin of this cake came out on the internet. I do know it was our family favorite and the men in the family requested it for their birthday every year. Another coincidence is that I was born in 1957, the year this recipe was published in the Dallas Morning News. The recipe became so popular, The Baker's company started printing it on the label of their product.

The cake looks absolutely amazing, but even in the single doze it has 600 gr sugar. That's a lot of sugar. I'm not sure I'd want to give this to the kids. And I bet if I put less sugar in the batter, it won't produce these amazing sponges. Ah, this is a huge dilemma as I think I'd love the cake :)

Hello and thank you for the recipe, it was deliecious! I made the cake this weekend, just with a different frosting/topping. I found the cake quite oily when I took it out of the pans, and after 24hours the delicious fluffiness started to sink and loose the air from the egg whites. Can you please let me know what I may have done wrong. I wondered if the butter was too much for the egg whites?

If you are sensitive to coffee, yes indeed you will taste it. Just fyi. I'm very sensitive to both the flavour and the caffeine in coffee.
