Heard rumors that one of the major companies is working on a small GPS position transmitter that fits onto the top of existing flagsticks. They also work on a universal software interface so that the position signal can be picked up by GPS watches, smartphone golf apps and GPS screens on electric trolleys to show the exact pin position on the green. That would be a fantastic feature!

I bought the Shotscope V3 the first day it was launched. I loved the concept but after three rounds the ability of the watch to connect with the clubs tags was not good enough. At least a third of shots were missed. I hope the new update sorted that problem as it has great potential. I decided to buy the Skycaddie LX5 as my course is undergoing major changes and this company will walk the course to measure everything again. The watch is brilliant! Exceeded my expectations!

@@Lightandluck I agree. Bought the watch after so many convincing youtube reviews. Sadly it did not live up to the promise - far too many missed shots to make it worthwhile looking at the stats. Having said that, the company were very responsive and processed a full refund as I was not prepared to wait for the firmware update. The concept is outstanding at the price if they have fixed the shot detection inconsistency.

I have the Garmin S20. It not only gives you distances but also tracks every shot you make for post round analysis without having to do anything or without having to have sensors on your clubs. I got mine on sale for USD $129. I've used it over the last 2 years for 200+ rounds and the data it provides without messing with it during the round is amazing. I wouldn't consider any other watch.

I agree with this. Best value for the $$. Beat the heck out of it and it keeps going. Only thing I would like is a little more information on carrying hazards. So thinking about upgrading and keeping this in the car for emergency rounds. Nothing worse than forgetting the watch once you get addicted to it.

Some of these watches offer you a suggestion as to which club to use in a specific situation based on previous performance. But that seems to be illegal according to the Rules of Golf 4.3a (1) which states: Not Allowed. ... Speed of play is another consideration; with the GPS watch you can make a decision in the time it takes some players to get the Laser out of its pouch. The most annoying thing with players with lasers is that they think because I have bought the damn thing I have to use it on every shot, like a 20-30 metre pitch or chip where it is all laid out in front of you visually including the slope and where you want to land it with various club choices but NO out comes the laser, check it twice, so it is 23.5 metres, hmm what do I do, change club choices 3 times, settle on it, 5 practice swings, change club choice, 5 more practice swings and oh oh I thinned it to 45 feet!! Didn't really need a laser to do that. But it happens all too frequently and round time, instead of being decreased, blows out considerably. And most players are playing the same course week in and week out. If I am playing a different course, I want to see the hazard locations and distances to them (not always visually obvious) and shot to green F, M and B when in range. I know my club distances, I can judge the wind, I know where I want to land it if I can hit a good shot, so a GPS with these features is sufficient and the decision on club choice is made pretty quickly.......

I have a shot scope V3. Wanted to love it but sadly I don't. It misses too many shots & makes editing hard work, especially trying to remember what club you played from where. Also one really annoying thing which nobody mentions is that the strap is the wrong way round from a conventional watch. This means the end of the strap catches on things and pops open. Could easily come off. I've emailed about this and the makers say it's because the RFID chip to read the tags is in that near strap so they cannot be swapped. What I don't get is why they didn't design the strap the other way then insert the chip so have the best of both worlds. All in all 3/5 for me.
@msalzberg4962
@msalzberg4962 4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. Basically, I find it misses anywhere from 5 - 15 shots per round. I don't remember to look before each shot to see if the watch has registered the tag, so I end up editing a lot afterwards. I also agree about the strap. It is a real annoyance to put the watch on like that. I'm also a bit leery of the accuracy and mapping. One of the courses I play has several holes with bunkers in the middle of the fairway that the watch doesn't show at all.
@marabu1977
@marabu1977 4 жыл бұрын
@@msalzberg4962 I don't agree with both of you. You HAVE to do something wrong. I played 3 different courses so far and probably one or two shots were missed thanks to the device itself. All others were thanks to me as I forget to mark hole location or change clubs and do not make preliminary swings (recomended in instructions). Editing is quite simple if you don't have sclerosis. Strap is weird with oposite way but as you should have it over not under the clothes again there is no problem unless you enjoy to shove hands into things were they do not belong. Pros: Excelent visibility in direct sun. Distances to front and back of hazards. Perfect function for penalty shots (e.g. if you select Provisional, display shows stopwatch with 3 minutes deduction and options for found/not found ball). Now to mention cons: One course is not up to date as company probably uses Google Maps (as most of the companies) which are old but these courses are 3rd class anyway ;) Some measurements are not too accurate but still pin point versus apps in my phone (eg. I am 5 meters from the green and it shows 3 meters but phone tells me that I am already on the green). Every time I finished the round it creates another round for 18th hole with weird measurements (probably some software glitch) but you just need to delete this. Something in between: Performance statistics (tee shots, approaches, short game etc.) are nice but you cannot rely on them as GPS have no accuracy in cm/inch
@msalzberg4962
@msalzberg4962 4 жыл бұрын
@@marabu1977 I've played 20 rounds on 10 different courses with my V3. It's not me; it's the watch. I shouldn't have to take extra 'preliminary' swings for it to register. Why should I change my pre-shot routine to make up for its inability to perform? I've found the ONLY way to make sure every shot is registered is to physically touch the sensor on the club to the catch in the watchband where the receiver is located. On my last round, the watch missed 15 shots, which is about average. It's not uncommon for the watch to register my drive, and then automatically give me two putts. Don't get me wrong: It's nice to see that I shot 7 under, even though I know I was 14 over. It's even better to see all of the 350 yard drives I hit. Editing afterward is not difficult, but it's not easy. It would be a lot easier if the watch / sensor combination just worked better. It's best done on a tablet, as the map on the dashboard on the computer is too small, and requires a *lot* of scrolling. The mapping is inconsistent. I've used it on three of the five courses at Bethpage, and it's pretty good. At the three courses at Eisenhower Park on Long Island (a pretty major public facility), there are bunkers in the middle of fairways that don't show up, it measures from tees that haven't been used in years to greens that haven't existed in years. It thinks the white tee box on the second hole of Eisenhower Red is rough. Eisenhower White and Blue both have double par 3s - two holes next to each other. If I'm on the tee box on the left hole, it should measure to the green on the left, and same if I'm on the right. Unfortunately, it doesn't recognize that the parallel holes exist, so it's pretty useless unless I'm on the one it has in its map. It would also be nice if, like the cheapest Garmin, it gave distances to doglegs, instead of just *most* bunkers and water hazards.

@@msalzberg4962 Yeah like most do "I am always right and everything is broken." First of all we are talking about device with ability to measure shots in price range where you can buy strap for Garmin which shows just distance to green and bunkers. 1. If you do not have pre-shot routine or it does not include club? And I think that Matthew Wolff is weirdo. :) 2. If you have any idea how NFC works than there is no need to tell more. 3. OK, map size can be bigger but if you have no idea how to work with zoom in/out buttons in combination with scrolling ... 4. OK, maps are not exactly precise and up to date but if you ask support for update (like I did) they will try to update them (and they did) 5. In one game I hit oposite (parallel) fairway and it shows without any problem. I am not saying that it cannot happen when you hit out which is not part of the course. 6. Sure there are other options which are not present - does not show score at the end, does not show actual score during game, does not show distance to every rabbit ear or dog leg but they may be able to add it in next. There is NO device which do everything that everyone wants. Two options for you are to buy couple of best devices such Garmin watch, Bushnell rangefinder, military GPS device etc. or buy indoor golf simulator which will show you all the spins, distances, even you can change weather. Both options will be SLIGHTLY more expensive and even PRO does not need them. Resume is: for amateur like I am is Shotscope mostly overkill for price of new putter and you PROs does not need such gadgets.

@@marabu1977 The proper tags are properly mounted on my clubs (D on Driver, H1 on 22º hybrid, 5i on 5 iron, etc). The tags are registered in the software (D= Callaway Epic, H1 = Cleveland Halo, 5i = Ping i20, etc). Set up as left handed on the software. I wear the watch on my right wrist. I take two practice swings as part of my normal pre-shot routine. I focus on my target, get set, take the shot. So, what am I doing wrong that it misses so many shots? My Garmin S10 (the cheapest Garmin watch) allows me to measure shots, but it required two button presses. It also tells me front, middle, and back of greens, distance to bunkers (or water), distance to carry bunkers (or water), and distance to doglegs. It gives a graphic representation of the green, from whatever angle I approach it from, so I know what front, middle, and back it's measuring. It's a very good watch, EXCEPT... it's not that accurate. It can be a club long or short. And that's why I got the V3 - its touted two GPSs and accuracy. EDIT: The tags were a bonus. It was on sale, and I got it for the price of a G3 watch. 1. I have a pre-shot routine, as described above. I don't watch a lot of golf, so I don't know who Matthew Wolff is, sorry. I'll take your word for it that he's a weirdo. There are a few of those on the tour right now. 2. If the NFC in this system doesn't work from 3" (measured distance from tag to watch band), it needs work. EDIT: NFC is meant for 4cm, which seems to be to short, 3. Constantly having to zoom in and out doesn't make it easy. That's why I prefer to use my tablet, rather than the computer, to enter all of the missed shots. Google Maps, which Shotscope uses, does not support pinch to zoom on a Mac, and that's a real annoyance. 4. I'm sure they will update the maps. I did contact support with specifics, and I'm sure they'll do everything they can. 5. I'm not talking opposite fairway. I'm talking about thinking the tee box is in the rough, or that an old, unused green is my target. I'm also talking about a course that has, for example, two 5th holes, parallel to each other. As described on their website "The course has elevated greens with 22 holes, as the par three's have double identical holes." You play either the left or the right. If I'm on the left tee box, the watch should show me the distance to the left green. If I'm on the right tee box, it should show me the distance to the right green. The Garmins have both holes in their map, and allow you to choose which one you're playing. The V3 only has one in the map, and you can't choose the other. It's a combination of map and smarts that are needed to be fixed. 6. I don't keep score on my watch - I have a scorecard and a pencil for that, and I can keep my own score in my head. The only thing I'd like to add is the distance to dogleg, which I think they can do easily in an update. On some holes, that's pretty important information. I think the watch itself is fine (but the mapping is suspect), and with the tags it is a real bargain. The Arcos system is the same price, and doesn't include the watch!

The fact is the apple watch and similar have a lot of very good app pairings with the iphone and make superb on course watches and it should be pointed out that if you own an apple watch already then its a no brainer in terms of bang for your buck. The Apple watch is hands down a better piece of kit than the specific golf watches if you want additional functinality. Lasers are good if you can actually see what you want to get a distance to. However, what about blind shots, layups etc etc? In this scenario a laser is absolutely useless. Both have their uses, but for 99% of golfers it has to be a GPS.

Sorry about the $100, true you can miss the flag and get the distance to some object behind, so you need to be careful in that regards, you usually have “some” idea of how far out you “feel” you are, I usually shoot the distance twice, and mire if I “feel” it isn’t right The other thing I do not like about GPS, front/middle/back!!! How far front/middle/back is the flag, hard to tell sometimes visually, you think it looks middle and it may be further back or ??? Laser tells you exactly. I can shoot a patch of grass, a bump in the fairway, anything to get a lay up distance to the yardage I want to play, can’t do that with GPS We all have our likes and I respect each and every golfer in what they like, I hope you play well, and I play better,,,Thanks

Simple answer for a dumb question. Its the ease of use, range finders require you to get it out of ur bag or cart every shot and hole, risks of leaving it in the cart and losing it, yada yada. Its literally the ease of use and personal preference, these watches arent trying to replace range finders its just giving people options. You should really try to think more open minded instead of just discredit anyone or any idea because it makes you look and sounds stupid and who wants that?

To have the golf edition features on the regular Galaxy watch you would need to buy a Smart Caddie membership, which is worth £76 I'm told. Hope this helps!

I heard on another review that 3 years is included in initial purchase, then you need to pay the yearly licence fee.

Stupid price for Tag. The others do the same and more. People want their head examined if they buy this. Its just allowing you to be robbed. Might aswell throw 1700 down the toilet.

There is no such thing as an accurate GPS watch. Laser with slope is the only accurate choice.

Slope that you can't use in competitions & how about blind shots, layups etc? A laser might be more accurate in terms of exact pin distance, but if you can't see the target, there's no point in having one. Also my golf app on my phone is never more than 2 yards either way of my Bushnell, so accuracy isn't an issue either.

@@kboy19831983 good call. But, having laser down to 1/2 a yard is the bomb. I have seen my buddies GPS watch off by 5 yards and that is way too much when you are trying to make some birds.

I find that the slope mode tends to exaggerate the effect of the slope, up and down, regardless of ranging method. I have 2 Garmin gps’s (watch and hand held) and a Leupold rangefinder. All 3 tend to overcompensate for slope effect.

@@torch8922 interesting, never had that issue with my bushnell. It is completely accurate for me.

Bushnell watches are complete junk, fails after less than 6 years (paint comes off on case and all of a sudden they stop from being recharged) and can't be repaired instead they (Bushnell) try to sell you a new one,. Save your money and spend a bit more and buy a Garmin, at least their customer support is much better. My Neo XS was a $225 mistake
