My wife and I are new to Ham Radio. We recently bought two HF radios (a Yaesu FTDX10 and a Xiegu G90) and required gear. We will use the radios at home as base stations, as well as at field days and at monthly POTA activations and car camping trips. For the portable applications, we want to be able to safely transport our radio gear from home to the locations. We are considering two alternative case strategies and want your opinion/recommendation: Alternative 1: Store the radios and gear in Harbor Freight 4800 and 5800 Apache cases during transportation, and we will pull them out of the cases and put them on a picnic table or truck tailgate when at POTA or camping location, and on a desk when at home. Alternative 2: Mount them in 4U or 6U Gator Cases and put the whole case on the picnic table, tailgate, or desk and leave them in the gator case during use. Your advice is greatly appreciated. I have as well, but my operating time is drastically reduced compared to my IC-7200. It’s not a very good portable radio unless you’re going to bring a lot of battery capacity with you.

Heck, I bought the 7300 and the DX10 at the same time. I love them both. I will say that I find myself using the DX10 more often.
@petersichel99349 ай бұрын
Interesting. I have the FTdx10 and IC-705 (+50w amp) for portable. The DX10 has the better receiver, but I prefer the Icom menu system and UI in several areas, especially for portable. For example: The DX10 menu system isn't available while transmitting. The built-in memory keyer covers over the waterfall display. You can only see one meter at a time (SWR, power out,...). Adjusting the keyer speed or power out is less intuitive because you have to acquire the target from a grid of 30 items instead a mode sensitive list of 3 items (speed, power, CW pitch). The Icom UI uses icons to leverage our innate image recognition ability. As a software developer I see how the thinking behind the Icom menu system is objectively more advanced. As Jason suggests it is a little easier and sometimes more enjoyable. On the other hand, the DX10 receiver outperforms Icom in the trenches with a superior front end, APF and Contour filter, CW tuning indicator, secondary tuning dial for split, and DVI out to drive an external monitor. For Field Day or other multi-radio settings the IC-7300 struggles with front-end overload and may need an external bandpass filter. Both radios sound great but the DX10 includes an audio equalizer for transmit and receive. Finally Yaesu includes a 3-year factory warranty. The DX10 is like a $3000 contest radio squeezed into a $1300 package WITHOUT the 2nd receiver or antenna options. Bottom line: both radios are excellent but there are some real differences depending on your budget and what kind of operating you enjoy. If you're serious about portable pay attention to the receiver power consumption. The IC-705 + 50 watt amp will run comfortably for hours from a 6 AH battery (in your carry on luggage).

I did months of research coming back into the radio family having done it for UK and US back in the 80s and 90s. For me the ftdx3000 was best value. For all the reasons you said about the DX10 is the reason I purchased that radio. Now for POTA I am torn between the 891 and 710 and leaning toward the 710 simply because I do not have to haul the radio far in any of the parks I activate and often simply operate either from my truck's cab or tailgate. Also there is almost know learning curve with the 710 from the DX10.

I got CBs and an old yaesu almost the same size. I was in a bug out situation where I could only grab 1 radio. Take a guess which one. I was so excited for the FTX-1F , until I saw it was QRP. Busted my bubble. Imagine trying to lug a 2m,1.25, 440, hf, and in my case 900 in an emergency. I can fit the 991A, 220 & 900, antennas, coax... in my backpack.

I tried using the FTDX10 as a POTA rig. It’s an excellent radio for the price point hands down but it’s huge drawback is it’s high current consumption on RX. I have available 2 batteries, a 15 & 20Ah Bioenno. With the 15Ah I only get 2.75 hours of use before needing to switch batteries. In comparison I have an IC-7200, a rig specifically built for field use and no longer made, but get 4 hours of use. That’s a huge difference in run time, especially if you’re depending only on battery power to run it. I’m still up in the air whether I’m going to sell the DX10 because my only HF radio operating is done during POTA activations because I can’t put up antennas at home.

Salutations from across the Red River, Jason! It will only be a matter of time before I get the FT-991A & the FT-DX10 as both rigs will do special things in my ham shack. Thanks to videos like yours, making said choices are much easier to do without the fear of buyers' remorse. An aside: I will be going to South Korea and Japan in a few months for a short vacation. 7100 beats the 991a, but really any of the radios presented here are good enough

As much as I love my Yaesu handhelds, my FT-991A went back in it's box pretty quickly. I replaced it with the Icom 9700 to sit next to my 7300 to cover all my HF/VHF/UHF needs and never looked back. The screen on the Yaesu doesn't come close to the Icom and honestly, whoever designed the menu system on the Yaesu should be arrested for crimes against humanity.

MY TECHNICTION CLASS ALLOWS ME 10 METERS HF. I USE THE STRYKER 955HPC 125 WATT MOBILE. AND I USE THE RCI-2995DX BASS STATION 300 WATT. I DIAL THE RF POWER KNOB TO 200 FOR MY LICENSE PRIVILEGES. THESE RADIOS WORK 10 AND 12 METERS.

Yes but everything mentioned in this video is much higher quality than those radios

@@HamRadio2agreed, they’re nothing more than over glorified CB radios. If they’re tuned properly they’re OK radios. The big problem is they’re usually turned into overmodulated splatter boxes by unscrupulous CB shops.

I’ve been talking through 3CX15,000a7 for the past 10-15 years and never got a license lol. I just like watts. I just make up a random license number every time, is that bad? I never cause trouble, just like to DX and talk to all the countries. When I was Army 18 series I learned some languages and talk to them all.

The 7300 is the easiest to set up for remote operation with RS-BA1, RCForb, etc. No additional device needed to put it on your network.

No additional device except a computer

AMAZING how they can build a cell phone that does EVERYTHING but ham radios have to a al carte everything. There is no reason why they can't make a say 50 or 100 watt all mode HF with 2meters 220 440 as well as CB, FM radio and smash in a Uniden SDS 100 scanner. Please tell me why this is not possible and if you have a good answer I will be shocked. These companies just want to keep punching out niche radios to sell more product. Hell by this time almost 2025 it should all be in a mobile or hand held radio sub 1k.
