I still have my Icom 7000. I prefer it in the mobile, although I have used it portable. My greatest experience with it was working A DX Expedition in the pacific on 20 meters. I was using a Tarheel screwdriver antenna at 100 watts. I got a response on my first call. I couldn't believe it. I had my wife get a piece a paper to scribble down the contact info. I was actually driving down I-5 going south bound from Portland, Oregon. Such an awesome rig. It will only leave my possession when I die or it dies.

I run my ic705 using a RAM mount and a 30-W aftermarket amplifier. Got a set of ham sticks and they all work amazingly. No tuner. Mostly just do CW, leg strap mounted paddle and enjoy QSOs and hunting parks to and from work. Also have a UHF/VHF antenna and a duplexer for VHF/HF and can switch over to 2 m or 70 cm when HF is quiet. Finally I have a pistar that hotspots to my phone automatically permanently installed in my vehicle so DStar/dmr is always an option.

I have the Kenwood TS480HX and a Yaesu 891d. Love both radios. What a like about the 480 is most of the controls needed are right on the head unit: mic control, power output, filters, etc. easy to get to controls. Only issue I had was at times when turn on dual power would not engage. I was told Kenwood repair If there is more than about 5% power difference between cables will not get dual power. I Checked power cables, connections, etc. I had firmware update and cleaned up connections and seems to work good. With this radio or my Yaesu with HI-Q 5-160 was a talker as a mobile. Had both radios in my pick-up and my semi truck.

I remember when they launched the Kenwood TS480 at the Leicester Rally in the UK. The first day they had sold out by 10 o'clock in the morning. And the vendor had to quickly get more stock in for the following day. This radio is still very popular to this day and it's very hard to find a used one. Interesting video, all the best David M0DUU

I have everyone of these radios. Is that bad? 😉 Love them all. Had to check because you are usually spot on Jason but the 7100 does NOT have a built in tuner. And as far as something you should have mentioned, the ATAS-120A is a great option for either of the Yaesu radios that the radio just supports out of the box. Maybe you are going to do a Best HF Mobile Antenna?
@HamRadio2

No it isn't bad that you have all of those - I have most of them. Yes I think I meant to say that the 7100 has a built-in sound card, but I said tuner instead. Not the first mistake I have made. Yes, a good HF Mobile Antenna video would be a great idea.

You’re absolutely right. I have a 7100 and that isn’t the first time I’ve heard someone say it has a built in tuner. It has a jack/socket for plugging in an external tuner. And the idea about a video on best HF mobile antenna is great too. In the video I could see he has what looks like a shorty Tarheel on his truck.

I have been dedicated mobile for the last 8 yrs, started off the ICOM7000, upgraded to the Kenwood TS480SAT and is a great radio however the Yaesu FT710 install has been a game changer. I use Diamond mono band HFCL range whips and I have a unique spot I park next to the sea and that has been a big advantage. It is a tiny little peninsula and when the tide is in I have 340 degrees of sea water giving a huge enhancement both in receive and transmit. (plenty of evidence in my channel) I use RAM mounts to mount all these radio, exceptional mounts. Thanks for the video, hopefully work you mobile to mobile in the future. MM5AJN/M Duncan 73

I have Icom 706 MK II G with their tuner but never used it. I ran the High Sierra HS-1500 MK II ( I had little board that you plugged in the back of the radio for tuning). Currently using a FT -857D with ATAS-120. Both are the best for me for the vehicles I used them in. ATAS-120 is ok but I spend more time putting the ball bearings back in the holes. I had a lot problems with the mounts breaking for the ATAS, but problem has been fixed. High Sierra was probably the best mobile antenna that i ever had. 80M was game changer. I like the Icom over the Yaesu and i had the separation kits for both of them. The Icom set up was sweet in my Silverado with a custom hitch mount for the High Sierra. There's a picture of it on my QRZ page, loved that set up. When I get a new car I ask my self where and how can I mount my mobile station. The best mobile station is what works for you.............73 N3LJS

nice radios. What I am looking for is VHF/UHF all mode. even AM and the 220 MHz band. the ones out now leave out the 220 band . when you find one with 220 band it's FM . not all mode. SSB/AM /FM RTTY /CW /digital . 2 meter AM is fun. nice range and better sound that weak FM which gets choppy. SSB works great 2 meters as well. 73's

I've run 480 sat and hx, icom 706 mkII, ft891, ft857 and icom 7000 and 7100. Best for all and running right now for all band all mode is the icom 7000. I run with all radios the Tarheel II. The best strictly for HF was the high powered TS480 HX because of the extra power. Still the Icom 7000 is my goto mobile all day long, everyday. Great reports especially for working with Tarheel II. Hard to get the separation cable, though, for IC7000, now. Ft891 is good for strictly HF for new production. KJ4BAD 😊

Why not the 7100?
@williambingham2459
@williambingham2459 9 ай бұрын
@@Z28videogates two big issues. 1. It's design and mounting. Cumbersom 2. Power output due to alc design issue has tendency to cut back power out. See forums concerning this issue. Also 7000 head is smaller and easier to mount in limited space, and design of screen information is better adapted to tuning Tarheel. Add to that is a solid modulated 100 watts which the 7100 seemed to limit at full modulation due to alc design. Receive on 7100 is very good but matched by 7000. That's my experience. If only HF needed, FT891 is a good match and priced right.

I only listen while driving though I have occasionally pulled off the road if there's rare station on the air. I have a CS800D under the font pax seat and the large screen mounted on a flexible stalk. The head for the 857D is mounted just above the large CS screen/head. I have a TYT 7800 2m/75cm mounted on the center console just under the AM/FM car radio. For POTA use I can quickly pull the radio from the trunk and slap the original head on it. The 7100 has always been the radio I want for my truck. I have a 891 currently, but its not installed in the truck, but more so my camping/carry rig. My elmer has a 7100, and he loves its performance, although he shares the view on the head unit and its design. It kinda limits the mounting options just due to its design. Other than that, its one that I am saving for to install in the new tundra. (My concern is how antennas will react to the composite bed...)

What would be great updates would be to have multiple faces available for the unit with a slide in/out mounting bracket. Let’s face it these radios are EXPENSIVE. A lot of us can’t afford to have several thousand dollars tied up in multiple radios for the shack and car. We end up having to make a choice between having one or the other. Or different types for mobile rather than shack. If the mfg’s focused on having a shack in the box that you could easily take from the shack and bring to the car and back you accomplish a lot. One place to program, one radio to learn how to use and maintain and minimize the rather huge investment needed to get into the more exciting areas of our hobby.

Not sure if it's been said, but he 706 original was HF-2m, but only 10W on 2, and repeaters had to be programmed using splits. Not too user friendly, but at the time, it was the only rig like it. I got one in 2000. The MKII added repeater offsets, and as you said, 20W on 2m. The MKIIG went to 50W on 2m, but only 20W on 70cm. I got that one shortly after it came out. The 7000 is still my favorite HF-70cm mobile rig, and I have 2 now. One I got shortly after they came out in 2006 and has been mobile from day one. My second is a backup/portable rig. IMHO, best radio in its class, as I personally hate the looks of the 7100, and can't stand a touch screen in the mobile (I have fingerprint OCD- LOL).

As an owner of an 891 and 7100 both in my mobiles, the 7100 wins hands down. But it does not have a tuner as you said on the video. It does have the sound card buit in though which enables easy mobile ft8. And the rig also allows 1khz tuning via the vfo or microphone buttons where the 891 does NOT which makes the yeasu a bit annoying to use while mobile. The 7100 also has safety PTT Tune when hooked to an external tuner. It's also nice that on the 7100 you can see all of the meters at once. The 891 is simple and compact but I feel that the recieve on the 7100 is superior. Just my opinion though.

I've been an Icom guy for decades, but an FT891 w/ ATAS antenna system is TEMPTING! No need for an antenna tuner. Only wish the 891 had data capability built in w/ a usb jack although a Digirig will do the job. Icom needs to revamp the 7100 with a color screen and an affordable antenna system like the ATAS. It would sell like crazy to the POTA crowd.

Meter vs Frequency. How does one tell what frequencies are in each meter band width? I’m very new and studying for tech test.
@HamRadio2
@HamRadio2 9 ай бұрын
Divide by 300, then find the Amateur Band that is closest. 300/10(meters) is 30. Our 10M band is around the 28-29MHz mark.

I have an IC-7100 that I use as a base station. Just wondering if the remote control software that you can buy for the Icom radios (Icom RS-BA1 Version 2) is worth the price. I have found it on sale on eBay for $88.
@fredorrell1273
@fredorrell1273 8 ай бұрын
Not sure about the 7100, but older radios like my Icom 7410 have limited functionality. I believe the 7100 and 7410 are from the same vintage, but the 7419 has been discontinued. The software display has way more controls than my radio will allow.

I tried to find an 857 before giving up and getting a 891. People want a ton of money for the 857's in the us (If you can find them) and I've heard some being sold from ebay you don't want since most of these are programmed for Japan's HAM freqs only.

That being said - I really like the FT891 because it's receiver is far better than the FT857. The filter is far better - almost comparable to my IC7300

@@HamRadio2 sadly, I'm not that familiar with ham. I've been researching it to find what would be best to get for a bit over a month. As many options on the radio as possible for him to enjoy. When he was serious about it last, radios were very expensive and we got hit hard financially at the time back in the 90s.
