I still have my Icom 7000. I prefer it in the mobile, although I have used it portable. My greatest experience with it was working A DX Expedition in the pacific on 20 meters. I was using a Tarheel screwdriver antenna at 100 watts. I got a response on my first call. I couldn't believe it. I had my wife get a piece a paper to scribble down the contact info. I was actually driving down I-5 going south bound from Portland, Oregon. Such an awesome rig. It will only leave my possession when I die or it dies.

I run my ic705 using a RAM mount and a 30-W aftermarket amplifier. Got a set of ham sticks and they all work amazingly. No tuner. Mostly just do CW, leg strap mounted paddle and enjoy QSOs and hunting parks to and from work. Also have a UHF/VHF antenna and a duplexer for VHF/HF and can switch over to 2 m or 70 cm when HF is quiet. Finally I have a pistar that hotspots to my phone automatically permanently installed in my vehicle so DStar/dmr is always an option.

I have the Kenwood TS480HX and a Yaesu 891d. Love both radios. What a like about the 480 is most of the controls needed are right on the head unit: mic control, power output, filters, etc. easy to get to controls. Only issue I had was at times when turn on dual power would not engage. I was told Kenwood repair If there is more than about 5% power difference between cables will not get dual power. I Checked power cables, connections, etc. I had firmware update and cleaned up connections and seems to work good. With this radio or my Yaesu with HI-Q 5-160 was a talker as a mobile. Had both radios in my pick-up and my semi truck.

I have everyone of these radios. Is that bad? 😉 Love them all. Had to check because you are usually spot on Jason but the 7100 does NOT have a built in tuner. And as far as something you should have mentioned, the ATAS-120A is a great option for either of the Yaesu radios that the radio just supports out of the box. I have Icom 706 MK II G with their tuner but never used it. I ran the High Sierra HS-1500 MK II ( I had little board that you plugged in the back of the radio for tuning). Currently using a FT -857D with ATAS-120. Both are the best for me for the vehicles I used them in. ATAS-120 is ok but I spend more time putting the ball bearings back in the holes. I had a lot problems with the mounts breaking for the ATAS, but problem has been fixed. High Sierra was probably the best mobile antenna that i ever had. 80M was game changer. I like the Icom over the Yaesu and i had the separation kits for both of them. The Icom set up was sweet in my Silverado with a custom hitch mount for the High Sierra. There's a picture of it on my QRZ page, loved that set up. When I get a new car I ask my self where and how can I mount my mobile station. The best strictly for HF was the high powered TS480 HX because of the extra power. Still the Icom 7000 is my goto mobile all day long, everyday. Great reports especially for working with Tarheel II. Hard to get the separation cable, though, for IC7000, now. Ft891 is good for strictly HF for new production. KJ4BAD 😊

Why not the 7100?
@williambingham24599 ай бұрын
@@Z28videogates two big issues. 1. It's design and mounting. Cumbersom 2. Power output due to alc design issue has tendency to cut back power out. See forums concerning this issue. Also 7000 head is smaller and easier to mount in limited space, and design of screen information is better adapted to tuning Tarheel. Add to that is a solid modulated 100 watts which the 7100 seemed to limit at full modulation due to alc design. Receive on 7100 is very good but matched by 7000. That's my experience. If only HF needed, FT891 is a good match and priced right.

@JoeKrol9 ай бұрын
What would be great updates would be to have multiple faces available for the unit with a slide in/out mounting bracket. Let’s face it these radios are EXPENSIVE. A lot of us can’t afford to have several thousand dollars tied up in multiple radios for the shack and car. We end up having to make a choice between having one or the other. Or different types for mobile rather than shack. If the mfg’s focused on having a shack in the box that you could easily take from the shack and bring to the car and back you accomplish a lot. One place to program, one radio to learn how to use and maintain and minimize the rather huge investment needed to get into the more exciting areas of our hobby.

Not sure if it's been said, but he 706 original was HF-2m, but only 10W on 2, and repeaters had to be programmed using splits. Not too user friendly, but at the time, it was the only rig like it. I got one in 2000. The MKII added repeater offsets, and as you said, 20W on 2m. The MKIIG went to 50W on 2m, but only 20W on 70cm. I got that one shortly after it came out. The 7000 is still my favorite HF-70cm mobile rig, and I have 2 now. One I got shortly after they came out in 2006 and has been mobile from day one. My second is a backup/portable rig. As an owner of an 891 and 7100 both in my mobiles, the 7100 wins hands down. But it does not have a tuner as you said on the video. It does have the sound card buit in though which enables easy mobile ft8. And the rig also allows 1khz tuning via the vfo or microphone buttons where the 891 does NOT which makes the yeasu a bit annoying to use while mobile. The 7100 also has safety PTT Tune when hooked to an external tuner. It's also nice that on the 7100 you can see all of the meters at once. The 891 is simple and compact but I feel that the recieve on the 7100 is superior. Just my opinion though.

I haven't looked at anything that old, but having used one of those for a while I can say that does not surprise me

I want Yeasu to make some matching radios. specifically, the FTM-500 body in an HF mobile HF model.

FT-857D was looking pretty good there but what's the point if it only does 60m that has some restrictions...ugh
@HamRadio29 ай бұрын
Only does 60M? What do you mean?

The Icom IC 7100 does not have an internal tuner as stated! If needed you would have to use an auto tuner such as the LDG brand auto tuner.

The IC-7100 does NOT have a built in tuner.
@chriswhite13189 ай бұрын
A friend of mine has one and we searched all over that radio and manual one day but never found a way to enable the built-in tuner. Conclusion - The IC-7100 is prepped for tuner use but does not include one internally.

Rumor has it that Kenwood is coming out with a VHF/UHF Mobile radio to replace the D710G. Built in Bluetooth, GPS, APRS capability and D-STAR.

They're all the same, since they are all 100w. The 200w Kenwood should go farther, but it depends on the antenna, more than it depends on power
