I use my atas 120 with my 705 with a homemade manual tuner, works a treat. Surprised how good the atas is.

ATAS120A ON MY TRUNK LID. THE BEST. HEAVY DUTY MOUNT WITH A 1/4INCH ALUMINUM PLATE ON THE UNDERSIDE FOR SUPPORT. YAESU FT991A IN THE MOBILE.

I’ll be driving so I won’t be commenting, but as mobile (and I mean genuinely mobile in a 68,500 Kg, 27 Metre long, multi trailer lorry) is my “thing” and has been for a little over 4 decades, I’m sure I’ll be anxious to listen to your input. Just FYI, my HF is just a little FT891 @ about 70 Watts fed into a Codan 9350 (Aussie made, commercial antenna used extensively in our extreme Outback conditions) sorta “screwdriver style” that works exceptionally well. HOWEVER, regardless of the type of radio and antenna, if you’re NOT prepared to spend a lot of effort on bonding, it’s kinda pointless. I won’t besmirch some of the antennas you sell simply because my environment is beyond hellish on equipment, but I’ve tried most options and there’s only a couple that can hack it out here. The vibration on corrugated dirt roads kills just about anything baring the most robust. Kindest regards and best 73 Indy VK2XB

@@Martin_Lynch I enjoyed the yarn as well, mate. In my opinion, about 80% of “get out ability” (new phrase just invented by Indy) and probably not far off that in noise reduction can be achieved with careful attention to bonding. Of course, on modern vehicles there’s also noise generated by engine management systems (Volvo, Mercedes and Scania heavy diesel motors are terrible for this, BTW) and some things that take a whole lot of chasing down …..such as ABS senders/sensors, EBS and auto traction sensors and can be a right Royal pain in the fundamental orifice. Noise reduction is somewhat akin to black magic, these days!!!!!! Anyway, I best stop boring y’all.

Have you ever thought with a 30' long & 3m wide empty timber trailer you could string a full size 20m 2ele wire Yagi between the corner supports (0.5 wave long by 0.15 wave wide)... Totally stupid but when someone comes up bragging about their atas to go back & say "that's fine but I've got a"proper" mobile setup here with a full size 2 ele Yagi".. top trumps or what!

I asked Cal about a DX Commander Mobile. He said it would be too expensive. That’s a shame. “For now…” I operate 100% mobile. Not doing too badly with a magnet mounted ATAS-120: 41 countries in 9 months of short drives. WB3CFN

Hello Alistair, all the CAB-MC cables come with SO239 at the antenna end and PL259 at the radio end.

If you run a ft817(8) & dual band VHF/UHF whip mobile (& it is a "straight -through" whip) & you are parked up then try HF using either 16.5 or 33 feet of wire crocodile clipped to your VHF/UHF whip at one end & chucked into a tree at the other ( or unscrew your whip & a 4mm banana plug on the end of your wire quaterwave will plug straight into the centre of your so239)... Your entire internal mobile setup can easily be jury rigged for HF for you to see what fun HF mobile can be & allow you to "try before you buy" a proper set-up.
