{Possible spoiler ahead} Was that a Hellraiser reference there at the end? or is the narrator simply an explorer of the furthest reaches of experience, only to find that the demons he (and his) have found are angels to others?

Apparently, this is part of a series. But while reading it and at the part of describing the cross on the pistol and necklace, I imagined they found a religious colony and this guy was just tech support, and those people had left the "more violent" society behind to found this colony. Imagine when Dal'Ton encounters a trained human. Probably not how the series goes, but those were my imaginings. ;)

I imagined a monastery where people are required to be routinely armed because it is a largely unexplored world that may have hazards/predators. When they learn that they invaded a bunch of religious pacifists . . . Yeah, that will be a hard one for them to deal with.

Yeah, calling them "demons" probably isn't doing any favors for the moral of your own troops facing them in battle. I feel bad for the poor soldiers on night watch, having to keep an eye out for "demons". Gonna need a lot of therapy.
