I'm glad the story didn't directly reference the American 'tomb of the unknown soldier' or any equivalent monuments from other nations. More respectful this way

@@allisterhale8229I agree, it could have easily been done, as has been done before, but it focused on his (the councilman) experience with this battle, and that one lone human. A memorial of the unknown human probably is there now, but it does seem more respectful this way with the implication.

It is because the soldier is unknown, that he carries such an impact. If even an unknown person, who could be the lowest or the highest in position would so willingly march forward when many have given up hope, it is easy to assume the rest of his kind would do the same.
@taitano12
@taitano12 Жыл бұрын
Judging from his last words, he'd lost hope too. Yet he used that as his justification for walking in and opening fire so boldly. Whether they're a good person or not, the scariest humans are the ones who have nothing to lose. He knew EXACTLY what he was doing. All the other humans were dead and, being an Observer, he was a noncom with no training with the Federation weapon he had commandeered - and probably used a bit during the battle. He knew he would not survive. He might as well take as many of the baby-eaters with him as he can. And, if these xenos were half as smart as they seemed, he'd serve as a decent distraction for their hail-Mary charge. So he turned the hose on hell and doused the fires with lead... Or whatever ammo this Fed weapon uses. 🫡

Though I'm a retired veteran of the Navy, I never faced anything close to such a combat situation. Now at 72, I like to think I'd have responded to it as the unknown soldier had. If our plant survives long enough for humans to actually reach the stars, to have a chance to become part of some sort of "Galactic Federation," I like to think that we'd prove to have such as these among our people. Then again, for our civilization to even get that far, it will only do so if there are such individuals.

He said the phrase that envokes final determination, he said F**k it. The Galactic Federation came to realize that when those two words are uttered by a human things are about to get real.

It's always like this. A soldier, an impossible situation. followed by a heavy sigh and a guttural bark of laughter as the soldier stands up checks their weapon and remarks with some variation of "Well today is a good day to die." Then walks off to do that which needs to be done to buy the time to turn that impossible situation into merely a desperate one.

As a soldier I'm used to feeling pride in my country. But it's a very strange feeling to feel pride in my species.
@ClaymorePunter

What would that feeling be called? To be proud of your nation is to be patriotic. So what would it be for your species?

If one can be patriotic and loyal to their people, it's simply a matter of scale, isn't it? Loyalty to one's family, town, region, country, planet, species... Are these not simply the same on different scales? At least, that's how I feel, personally. For me, my loyalty to my home country is equal to my loyalty to humanity. That isn't loyalty to the government of my home, but to the people and their ideals.
@ClaymorePunter
@ClaymorePunter Жыл бұрын
@@The_Viscountthat is valid point I guess it would be the same thing on a larger. But that's still a rare feeling all the same. And as for your per your last sentence. I'm of the same believe. I do this out of loyalty to my nations people, my home and family not out of blind allegiance to any type of government.

Doesn't matter! One man accepted Our Father and became more for a while.Not for reward, not for fame,not for glory or gain, Just because the alternative, was not to be thought of. Name? Hercules , Theseus, Romulus, Gaius, Angelus, Peter, .. a billion billion names. I could name names till the stars burn out, and stil not name them all. Names are irrelevant, actions remain. Actions change the world.
